Tony Gwynn Jr. won the game for Triple-A Syracuse Sunday with a tenth-inning walk-off single.
Gwynn Jr. doesn't really qualify as a prospect—he turns 33 in October—but that shouldn't make his contributions Sunday any less notable. The walk-off hit comes one year after the passing of Gwynn Jr.'s father, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. While Gwynn Jr. isn't an obvious call-up candidate (he's only batting .228), he could get a chance with Washington if any of the Nats outfielders go down with injuries. Mon, Jun 22, 2015 03:08:00 PM

Nationals reassigned OF Tony Gwynn Jr. to minor league camp.

Despite outfield injuries to Jayson Werth and Denard Span, Gwynn was unable to secure a bench spot after a nice spring (.341/.420/.500). This is due mostly to Gwynn having options. Recent acquisition Matt den Dekker will serve the bench role. Tyler Moore and Michael Taylor are currently slated to start in the OF alongside Bryce Harper. Should the Nationals see a few more injuries, Gwynn is a possible call-up.

Tony Gwynn Jr. homered off Justin Verlander on Tuesday and is 10-for-24 this spring.

With Denard Span a certainty for the DL and Jayson Werth possibly joining him, there might be a temporary spot open for Gwynn on the Nationals' bench. Michael Taylor is expected to start in Span's place and Nate McLouth, if healthy, is guaranteed a job because of his salary, but Gwynn has made a really nice impression since signing just two weeks ago.

Nationals signed OF Tony Gwynn Jr. to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Gwynn, 32, hit just .152/.264/.190 over 80 games for the Phillies last season and had to wait it out until March to find a job, but he finally has one. He'll face a major uphill battle to win an Opening Day roster spot but offers the Nats some veteran depth in the minors.

Tony Gwynn Jr. went 2-for-3 with a double and walked against the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Gwynn was already gaining traction as a bench candidate for the Phillies, but in light of Darin Ruf's oblique injury, he now has a pretty good chance of breaking camp with the team. He does make for a better backup center fielder than John Mayberry Jr., except since he and Ben Revere are both left-handed hitters, there's no good way to use them in tandem. Even if he does make the team, Gwynn shouldn't have any fantasy value in NL-only leagues.

Phillies signed OF Tony Gwynn Jr. to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Gwynn is a career .244/.312/.318 hitter over 1,671 big league plate appearances. Most players of his skill level don't get that amount of MLB playing time, but it pays to be named Tony Gwynn. The younger Gwynn rebounded from year's of offensive strife to slash .300/.393/.384 at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2013, though the Dodgers didn't trust the 31-year-old enough to promote him to the active roster.
