Tony Gwynn Jr. is day-to-day with a left groin injury.

Gwynn was held out of workouts Tuesday and will likely be shut down for a few days. The injury is not related to the sports hernia surgery he dealt with last season.

Dodgers sent Tony Gwynn Jr. outright to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Gwynn was designated for assignment earlier this week but apparently drew no interest on waivers. He will go on serving as organizational outfield depth for Los Angeles.

Dodgers designated OF Tony Gwynn Jr. for assignment.

The Dodgers inked Gwynn to a two-year, $2 million contract over the winter, which means they owe him $1.15 million in 2013 if the club is unable to swing a trade. Gwynn, 29, was very useful as a fourth outfielder last season, batting .256/.308/.353 with two homers, 22 RBI, 22 stolen bases and a .660 OPS over 340 plate appearances while playing excellent defense. This season, however, was disastrous. He posted a sub-replacement .232/.276/.293 slash line in 277 at-bats. That's an OPS+ of 58, folks. Los Angeles will try to find a taker for him.

Tony Gwynn Jr. went 0-for-4 as the Dodgers' leadoff man Thursday and is hitting .146 in 48 at-bats this month.

Bobby Abreu hasn't been hitting at all, so the Dodgers have been giving Gwynn more at-bats with even worse results. Gwynn is hitting just .237/.280/.300 for the season, so as anything more than a defensive replacement or pinch-runner, he's a liability.

Tony Gwynn Jr. (hamstring) went 1-for-3 with a single in his return to the Dodgers' starting lineup Tuesday.

Gwynn was scratched from Monday's lineup with a tight hamstring, but it shouldn't be a concern moving forward. The 29-year-old should get semi-regular playing time while Matt Kemp (hamstring) is sidelined, so he's well worth owning in NL-only formats.

Tony Gwynn Jr. was scratched from Monday's lineup against the Phillies due to a tight hamstring.

Gwynn is available off the bench, so it doesn't sound like a major concern. Elian Herrera will make the start in center field Monday while Adam Kennedy plays third.

Tony Gwynn Jr. roped a pinch-hit, three-run triple in Wednesday's win over the Giants.

Gwynn's third extra-base hit of the season more than doubled his RBI total (two entering this evening). A pinch runner and defensive replacement, he's off the radar in all but the deepest of NL-only leagues.

Dodgers and OF Tony Gwynn, Jr. avoided arbitration by agreeing to a two-year, $2 million contract.

Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that he'll earn $850,000 in 2012 and $1.15 million in 2013. Gwynn, 29, was very useful as a fourth outfielder this past season, batting .256/.308/.353 with two homers, 22 RBI, 22 stolen bases and a .660 OPS over 340 plate appearances while playing excellent defense. The new contract covers his remaining arbitration years.

Tony Gwynn Jr. returned to action on Monday, finishing 0-for-1 in pinch-hitting duty.

He missed nearly two weeks with a bruised left rotator cuff. It's a bit of a surprise that the Dodgers didn't simply shut him down this late in the season. Gwynn has rebounded nicely from a rough 2010 season.

Tony Gwynn Jr. (shoulder) hopes to return at some point later this season.

Gwynn has a bruised left rotator cuff that he originally hurt while stealing a base earlier this month and then aggravated on another slide last week. An impending free agent, Gwynn also stated his desire to return to the Dodgers next season. "I enjoy being here; I'd love to come back," Gwynn said. "Obviously, I want to play as much as possible. If it's not every day — honestly, I don't even think of it like that. Just give me the opportunity and let my work dictate how much I play."

Tony Gwynn Jr. (shoulder) is expected to be limited to pinch-hitting for the next few days.

It's not clear yet what the results of the MRI on Gwynn Jr.'s shoulder revealed, but either way the Dodgers will sit him out for a while. He hasn't played the last two games due to shoulder soreness.

Tony Gwynn Jr. underwent an MRI on his left shoulder Friday.

Gwynn didn't play Thursday and is expected to sit out again Friday. We should have a better idea as to when he'll return once the results of the exam are revealed.

Tony Gwynn Jr. belted a solo homer in Friday's win over the Rockies.

The Hall of Famer's son has now gone deep twice over the last three games after managing a mere five bombs in his first 472 career games. The power surge won't continue, but Gwynn is playable in deeper fantasy leagues due to his stolen bases, as he has four over the last six games and 19 on the year.
Sat, Aug 20, 2011 12:01:00 AM

Tony Gwynn Jr. went 3-for-5 with a solo home run in Los Angeles' loss to the Brewers on Wednesday.

Gwynn's seventh inning solo shot off of Zack Greinke was his first home run of the season, and provided the Dodgers' only run of the evening. Gwynn has now gone deep six times in 473 career games.
