The Cubs are planning to promote outfielder Ryan Sweeney from Triple-A Iowa before Tuesday's game.

Chicago opens a two-game set with the rival Cardinals on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. Sweeney, who's been killing the ball at Triple-A, will replace struggling backup outfielder Dave Sappelt on the Cubs' active roster. This is not a move that needs to register on fantasy radars.

Sweeney, who was released by the Red Sox over the weekend at his request, will report to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs don't have a whole lot of outfield depth at the big league level, so it's not a bad landing spot for the 28-year-old. "I've just been home for the last few days working out," Sweeney said. "They want me to go get some at-bats and hopefully I'll be up pretty quick."

Ryan Sweeney indicated Wednesday that he wouldn't accept a minor league assignment if he's not added to the Opening Day roster.

Sweeney appears to be on the outside looking in for a roster spot, so figures to use his opt-out clause on Thursday. The 28-year-old outfielder is batting .222 (10-for-45) with a double and two RBI in 19 games this spring.

Ryan Sweeney's minor league deal with the Red Sox has a March 28 opt-out clause.

In other words, Sweeney can become a free agent if he's not on the Opening Day roster. Lyle Overbay, who recently signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox, also has an opt-out date of March 26.

The 28-year-old outfielder hit .260/.303/.373 in 63 games with the Red Sox in 2012 before undergoing surgery to a broken finger. The deal contains an opt-out clause if Sweeney is not on the big league roster at the end of spring training. He should provide valuable depth as a reserve outfielder, especially in the wake of the news that Ryan Kalish will need surgery and miss the beginning of the season.

The Twins outfield has been depleted this offseason after trading away Denard Span and Ben Revere. If interested, he could provide solid depth with his ability to handle all three outfield positions defensively.

Ryan Sweeney (pinkie) is expected to miss eight weeks.

Sweeney punched his throwing hand into a door inside Boston's dugout Monday after Omar Infante stole a hit from him in the eighth. His hand swelled up and he was removed from the game. Sweeney very well may have fractured his left pinkie, but official word on his health has not yet been released. Ryan Kalish will likely replace Ryan Sweeney on Boston's roster.

Well, this is one way to ensure you won't be traded. In all seriousness, Sweeney sustained the injury after his last at-bat. He will need X-rays following the frustration-causing ailment.
