Ryan Sweeney went 3-for-4 with two doubles Friday as the Twins beat a Red Sox split-squad 8-6.

Sweeney, who last plated in the majors with the Cubs in 2014, is hitting .346 with four doubles this spring. The only way he'd have a chance of making the Twins is if an outfielder gets hurt or if the team decides Byron Buxton needs more seasoning in Triple-A. Even that wouldn't assure him of anything, though. Perhaps he'll impress another team.

Twins signed OF Ryan Sweeney to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Sweeney did not appear in a game at any level of MLB-affiliated ball in 2015 and he batted just .251/.304/.338 across 226 plate appearances with the Cubs in 2014. The 30-year-old outfielder is nothing more than an organizational depth piece for Minnesota.

Cubs released OF Ryan Sweeney.

Sweeney was designated for assignment over the weekend after failing to crack the Cubs' Opening Day roster. Chicago will still be responsible for his $1.5 million salary for this season and a $500,000 buyout on an option for 2016.

Cubs designated OF Ryan Sweeney for assignment.

Sweeney couldn't crack the Cubs' crowded, talented outfield this spring. The 30-year-old could draw some interest on waivers from teams in need of outfield depth.

Ryan Sweeney (hamstring) is likely done for the season.

Sweeney went on the DL last week with another hamstring injury, and he's just not going to have enough time to get back. He ends the season with a .251/.304/.338 batting line over just 77 contests. Sweeney is under contract for $1.5 million next season.

Ryan Sweeney homered and drove home four runs on Friday, powering the Cubs to a 7-6 victory over the Cardinals in an afternoon matinee at Wrigley Field.

Sweeney got the Cubs on the board in the second inning with a three-run shot off Joe Kelly, then tacked on an RBI single his next time up. Even with the 2-for-4 effort though, he’s hitting a mere .221/.264/.302 on the season and has little value outside of NL-only formats.
