Phillies signed RHP Jose Mesa to a one-year contract.
Mesa, who had a 12.34 ERA in 16 appearances for Detroit, will received the prorated minimum from Philadelphia, while the Tigers continue to pay the rest of his $2.5 million salary. He's been written off before and bounced back, but the odds are against him being an adequate middle reliever. Sat, Jun 9, 2007 06:03:00 PM

According to FOXSports.com, Jose Mesa has signed with the Phillies.

As expected. Mesa isn't a good bet at all at this point, and the Phillies would probably be hurting themselves if they continued to carry him when both Brett Myers and Tom Gordon return, assuming that those two are ever healthy at the same time.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that the Phillies will work out Jose Mesa to determine if he would help their bullpen.

Mesa is the Phillies' franchise leader in saves with 111. He would likely take a sixth or seventh inning role in the bullpen if they decide to sign him. The team also remains interested in signing free agent Troy Percival.

Tigers released RHP Jose Mesa.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski is very good at his job, but giving Mesa a $2.5 million contract over the winter was never a good idea. Mesa ended up with a 12.34 ERA in 16 appearances for the Tigers. Fernando Rodney will come off the DL on Tuesday to replace him in the pen.

Jose Mesa allowed four runs in an inning to ruin what chance the Tigers had of coming back in Thursday's loss to the Indians.

It was a 7-5 game when Mesa entered to begin the bottom of the eighth. When he was done, it was 11-5 and his ERA had jumped to 12.34. Mesa has given up multiple runs six times in 16 appearances, only one of which has lasted more than an inning.

Jose Mesa allowed two runs in one-third of an inning on Monday and has given up runs in three of his four appearances this season.

Mesa has a 20.25 ERA in 2 2/3 innings. With viable alternatives in Triple-A, the Tigers should wait too long for Mesa to turn it around. Even if he improves, he's nothing more than an adequate middle reliever.
