Cubs released LHP Mike Stanton.
Stanton gave up six runs and 13 hits in 8 1/3 innings. He was never a serious threat to make the Cubs, and he probably didn't impress other teams very much with his showing this spring. Mon, Mar 30, 2009 01:26:00 PM

Cubs signed LHP Mike Stanton, INF Luis Rivas, OF Jason Dubois and OF So Taguchi to minor league contracts and invited them to spring training.

The Reds ate $3.5 million to dump Stanton last year, and the 41-year-old left-handed ended up sitting out the season. Now he's back to try to add to his 1,178 major league appearances. It's quite unlikely that he'll make the Cubs.

Reds released LHP Mike Stanton.

After designating him for assignment on March 31, the Reds attempted to trade Stanton without success. He was still owed another $3.5 million on the contract he after the 2006 season.

Reds designated LHP Mike Stanton for assignment.

The Reds are paying $3.5 million to cut Stanton with a year left on his deal. The 40-year-old lefty had a 5.93 ERA in 57 2/3 innings last season.

Mike Stanton was informed by the Reds that he's being cut despite the $3 million left on his contract.

A big surprise, especially on the heels of Bill Bray's demotion. Barring a late pickup, Kent Mercker apparently will be the second lefty in Cincinnati's pen.

Former Mets clubhouse employee Kirk Radomski said he twice sold human growth hormone to Mike Stanton.

Both incidents took place in 2003. Stanton paid Radomski $3,200 in the form of a money order the first time. The second time, it was $1,600 cash.

Reds activated LHP Mike Stanton from the 15-day disabled list.

The Reds are back to carrying three southpaws in the pen, though only Jon Coutlangus is any good against lefties. Stanton is pretty much all veteran presence at this point, and Mike Gosling is pitching in middle relief.

Mike Stanton (hamstring) was pain-free after fielding practice on Tuesday.

Stanton was scheduled to make a minor league rehab appearance with Single-A Dayton Wednesday night and could be activated from the disabled list on Thursday.

Mike Stanton (hamstring) is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on Monday, but remains uncertain if he'll be ready.

"I'm not sure I'll be ready...but it will be just a couple days after that," the veteran left-hander said. "The first week was a little rough but over the last week I've made some pretty good progress. Things are coming along."

Reds placed LHP Mike Stanton on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

Stanton, who had recently been pitching well for a change, was injured while making a rare plate appearance on Saturday. Michael Gosling will replace him for now, but perhaps only until Eddie Guardado returns.

Mike Stanton strained his hamstring running out a grounder in a rare at-bat Saturday against the Rangers.

Stanton hit for himself in the bottom of the sixth, but because of the injury, he didn't come back out for the seventh. He's probably day-to-day, though we're guessing it will be a while before the Reds use him as a pinch-runner.

Mike Stanton has been anointed the setup man for the Reds.

"We might use Stanton," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "Left-hander, right-hander, it doesn't matter. We'll see how he feels. I've got full confidence in Stanton when he's out there. Last year, he went over to San Francisco and did a good job closing. That's not to say it's in cement." Stanton has a 4.91 ERA this season, but hasn't allowed a run in 11 of 12 outings.

Mike Stanton appeared in his 1,120th major league game Sunday, breaking a tie with John Franco and moving into second place on the all-time list behind only Jesse Orosco.

It wasn't exactly a memorable outing, as Stanton gave up two hits and three runs while recording just two outs. The Reds obviously plan to continue to work him hard, considering he's already appeared in 11 games this year.

Mike Stanton will earn $5.5 million over the next two years under the terms of his deal with the Reds.

Stanton gets salaries of $2 million next year and $3 million in 2008. There's a $2.5 million club option for 2009 that can be bought out for $500,000. If he appears in 140 games over the next two seasons, the option-year salary vests at $2.75 million.
