Juan Gonzalez was placed on the temporary inactive list on Wednesday.
He hadn't played since March 10 due to an abdominal strain. The move leaves the door open for Gonzalez, who will head back to Puerto Rico with the option of returning to the team if he ever gets healthy, but it's doubtful he'll see time with the Cardinals this season. Wed, Mar 26, 2008 09:11:00 PM

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Juan Gonzalez (abdomen) will "back it off" for 5-7 days.

Gonzalez was checked Thursday for a hernia and results were negative, but general manager John Mozeliak said afterward that he has no shot at cracking the Opening Day roster. Gonzalez's injury seemingly all but guarantees that Rule 5 pick Brian Barton will make the team.

A radiologist confirmed that an MRI revealed no structural damage to the abdomen of Juan Gonzalez.

Gonzalez has been out for over a week, and will probably miss a couple more days. He will have to return soon if he wants any hope of getting a roster spot over Brian Barton.

Juan Gonzalez underwent an MRI on the abdominal strain that has sidelined him for over a week.

A team doctor saw no structural problem, but the Cardinals will have a radiologist look at the results today. This isn't helping the 38-year-old's shot at making the team, especially when 25-year-old Rule-5 pick Brian Barton has been playing well.

Juan Gonzalez is out of the lineup for the fifth straight game Saturday, still recovering from an abdominal strain.

According to Cardinals trainers, the same discomfort that kept him out during the week remains. The injury is likely taking a heavy toll on his chances of making the team, especially with Brian Barton playing so well in his absence.

Juan Gonzalez is out of the lineup for a second straight game Thursday with a mild abdominal strain.

There was no way he was going the entire spring without some sort of injury. There have been several indications that the Cardinals are leaning toward carrying Gonzalez as a part-time player, but if it comes down to him or Brian Barton, Barton would make a lot more sense for the future of the organization.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Sunday that the team is done using the DH this spring.

This is not good news for Juan Gonzalez, who has DH'd more than any other Cardinals player this spring, and is still trying to make the Opening Day roster. The team has a plethora of unproven outfielders in camp, all vying for their fair share of at-bats. The 38-year-old seems to have become a favorite of Tony La Russa's, but at this point one has to question whether time in the field should be risked on Juan Gone while younger players stand by.

Juan Gonzalez cranked a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw from Johan Santana to help push the Cardinals over the Mets 5-4 on Friday.

Gonzalez pulled a knee-high fastball over the wall in left in the first inning for his lone hit in three at-bats. With Scott Spiezio gone, the Cardinals now seem to have room for both Ryan Ludwick and Gonzalez on their roster. Still, Gonzalez has to do a lot more this spring before he'll convince anyone he can be an asset.

Cardinals signed outfielder Juan Gonzalez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Gonzalez will get a chance to beat out Ryan Ludwick for a roster spot. Considering that Ludwick hit .267/.339/.479 in 303 at-bats last season and Gonzalez's last effective half-season came five years ago, it shouldn't be much of a contest.

Newsday believes free agent Juan Gonzalez is set to sign a minor league deal with the Cardinals.

It was reported last month that this might happen, but there's been no followup the last couple of weeks. Gonzalez, 38, last played in the majors in 2005.

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Juan Gonzalez is attempting a comeback and the Cardinals may be interested in him.

Gonzalez is 38 years old and last played in the majors with the Indians in 2005, when he injured himself running the bases following his very first at-bat. He's reportedly working out in Puerto Rico and has looked good enough to catch the Cardinals' eye, but remains a long shot to have any sort of fantasy impact.

Free agent Juan Gonzalez went 4-for-5 with a double on Tuesday and is 9-for-22 in the Caribbean World Series.

He's helped his cause a bit, but we imagine major league teams are still going to be pretty skeptical. The double tonight came on a hanging slider that would have been turned into a 450-foot homer in Gonzalez's prime.

The Angels are the latest team to say they're not interested in free agent Juan Gonzalez.

"There's not (an interest)," GM Bill Stoneman said Monday. "We're not pursuing Juan Gonzalez." The Angels, along with the Orioles and Tigers, were mentioned in connection with Gonzalez in reports out of Puerto Rico. All three teams have since denied any interest.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said a report that he's considering signing Juan Gonzalez is untrue.

An item out of Puerto Rico said the Orioles, Tigers and Angels had expressed interest in Gonzalez, but the first two have denied it and there's been nothing else to suggest the Angels want him. If the Tigers were going to add a bat, they'd want a left-handed hitter.

An Orioles official said the team had no interest in free agent Juan Gonzalez.

A report out of Puerto Rico claimed Baltimore, along with the Angels and Tigers, had some interest the two-time MVP.
