Jose Offerman has been suspended for life by the Dominican Republic's winter league after attacking an umpire during a playoff game on Saturday.
Offerman, interim manager for the Licey Tigers, attempted to throw a punch at American umpire Daniel Rayburn in the third inning of Saturday's game against the Cibao Giants. Rayburn, along with three other American umpires, have left the country for fear of their safety. The 41-year-old Offerman was previously arrested for attacking two players with a bat as a member of the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League in 2007. Mon, Jan 18, 2010 12:55:00 PM

Jose Offerman made his first start of the season for Triple-A Norfolk on Monday.

Offerman started at first base for the Tides. He won't be called up unless the Mets have a serious string of injuries.

Mets signed first baseman Jose Offerman to a minor league contract.

Just in case Julio Franco dies of old age? The Mets aren't going to be able to carry two pinch-hitters only capable of playing first base. Offerman isn't really more than an emergency option anywhere else these days.

Free agent Jose Offerman went 3-for-4 with two homers Saturday for Licey of the DWL.

Offerman, who is trying to show he's still worthy of a spot on a major league bench, is 13-for-40 with three homers.

Free agent Jose Offerman went 4-for-4 with a homer yesterday for Licey of the DWL.

He is 5-for-11 in three games. Offerman, who hit .250/.316/.319 in 72 AB for the Mets, will try to land another job as a pinch-hitter next year.

Mets purchased the contract of infielder Jose Offerman from Triple-A Norfolk.

Offerman was hitting .167/.189/.167 in 36 AB since joining Norfolk, but injuries had left the Mets with few alternatives. He'll get a couple of starts against lefties and be used as a pinch-hitter while Doug Mientkiewicz is out. No fantasy value.

Mets signed infielder Jose Offerman to a minor league contract.

Offerman will be assigned to Triple-A Norfolk after playing in some extended spring games. The Mets should have better options if they find themselves in need of a bench player, but maybe he'll find his way into a pinch-hitting role in August or September.

Jose Offerman will reportedly refuse a minor-league assignment.

''My time in the minor leagues has passed,'' Offerman said. As a five-year veteran, he can demand his release if they give him a minor-league assignment. His options are retirement or hoping he gets picked up by another team. He may have seen his last major league at-bat, and if so, just like Ted Williams' final swing, Offerman's was a home run.

Phillies designated first baseman Jose Offerman for assignment.

The day after he hits his first home run of the season? We doubt this is a sign that the Phillies are planning to keep Ryan Howard after Jim Thome returns. Instead, Endy Chavez can take Offerman's pinch-hitting role after Kenny Lofton returns to center field.

Phillies purchased the contract of first baseman Jose Offerman.

Offerman is hitting .298/.365/.383 in 47 at-bats. He'll serve as a pinch-hitting specialist, giving him no fantasy value.

Philles manager Charlie Manuel compared Jose Offerman to a broken down horse.

Nice analogy. Offerman went 3-for-4 Thursday, but was thrown out by two steps after a slow gallop around the basepaths. ''He was running low, son. He was like one of those trotters. Breaking down,'' Manuel said. Manuel said it was still a positive day for Offerman because of his hitting.

The strained oblique which has sidelined Jose Offerman since Saturday has healed enough to allow him to hit at about ''50%'' lefthanded.

Well, 50% of Jose Offerman has to be worth at least 25% of the average major leaguer. He's trying to make the team as a pinch-hitter.

Jose Offerman can't hit from the left side because of a slightly strained side muscle.

Pretty discouraging news for someone who hit just .176 in 51 at-bats from the right side last season.

Phillies signed infielder Jose Offerman to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

The Phillies dropped Shawn Wooten and Lou Collier and Ryan Howard isn't going to be kept as a bench player, so maybe Offerman will make the team as a pinch-hitter. The 36-year-old hit .256/.363/.395 in 172 at-bats for the Twins last season.

Twins sent 1B Jose Offerman and C Pat Borders outright to Triple-A Rochester.

Both opted for free agency. Offerman was everything the Twins could have hoped for this year, finishing with a 759 OPS in 172 AB. The team may have some interest in bringing him back.
