Non-roster right-hander Dave Burba was pounded for six runs in 1 1/3 innings by the Cubs today.

Perhaps the only thing to be decided now is whether Burba or Kevin Appier will end his comeback first. Both went into the springs as long shots to make the Mariners.

Mariners signed RHP Dave Burba to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Burba was rather effective for the Brewers and Giants in 2004, finishing with a 4.21 ERA in 77 innings, but he hasn't pitched in the majors since. At age 39, a successful comeback appears unlikely.

The Mariners and Dave Burba have reportedly agreed to a minor league contract.

Burba failed to make the Astros last season, and after spending the first two months of the year in Triple-A, he asked for his release in June and chose not to sign elsewhere. He'll be a long shot to win a spot in middle relief.

The Astros released veteran pitcher Dave Burba from Triple-A yesterday.

Burba asked for his release. He was 4-3 with a 4.38 ERA in 35 1/3 innings at Triple-A.

Dave Burba, reassigned to minor league camp yesterday, has decided to open the season at Triple-A Round Rock.

Burba could have elected for free agency after being sent down.

Astros reassigned RHP Dave Burba, RHP Travis Driskill, LHP Phil Norton, C Dax Norris, C Chris Tremie, 3B Mike Coolbaugh, 1B Carlos Rivera and OF Trenidad Hubbard to minor league camp.

No real surprises here. The Astros made a mistake by looking at Burba as a starter. He's had a fair amount of success as a middle reliever the last couple of years, and that's all he should have been viewed as this spring.

Dave Burba was credited with a win today despite allowing seven runs -- six earned -- in three innings against the Phillies.

This could eliminate Burba from the mix for the fifth spot in the Houston rotation. He should have been viewed strictly as a middle reliever right from the start of the spring.

Dave Burba pitched four scoreless innings against the Yankees to match Randy Johnson today.

It wasn't a loaded Yankee lineup Burba faced, but Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada were playing. Burba desperately needed this after allowing 12 runs -- six earned -- in 4 1/3 innings in his two appearances against the Indians. He remains in the running for a rotation spot, though he figures to be used as a middle reliever if he makes the team at all.

Dave Burba was tagged for eight runs -- three earned -- in 2 2/3 innings today in a loss to the Indians.

It's the second straight outing in which the Indians have roughed up the pitcher that won 15 or more games for the team each season from 1998-2000. They could be a little more forgiving. Burba apparently was getting a chance to move into the competition for the fifth spot in Houston's rotation, but he should be viewed as nothing more than a middle reliever these days.

Getting roughed up by his former team, Dave Burba allowed four runs -- three earned -- and six hits in two innings against the Indians today.

Juan Gonzalez and Ryan Ludwick homered in the four-run fourth inning. Burba, who is a little behind this spring because of his knee problems, is competing for a spot in Houston's pen.

An MRI on Dave Burba's sore right knee came back negative. He received a cortisone shot.

Burba, who is trying to win a spot in the Houston pen, is expected to throw off the mound today.

Non-roster reliever Dave Burba will leave camp today or Tuesday to have his right knee examined.

Burba, troubled by soreness down the side of his knee since camp starter, has been able to throw off the mound but has been unable to participate in running drills. If healthy, he's a top candidate for one of the open spots in Houston's pen.

Astros signed RHP Dave Burba to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Burba might not make the Astros if Tim Redding, Brandon Duckworth and Carlos Hernandez all have good springs, but what are the odds of that happening? If the Astros end up not wanting him, the 38-year-old should be able to find a home somewhere.

The Astros reportedly have signed Dave Burba to a minor league contract.

Burba was pretty effective last season, finishing with a 4.21 ERA in 77 innings. He'll battle for a spot in middle relief, which is one area in which the Astros are pretty loaded (Chad Qualls, Tim Redding, Pete Munro, Brandon Duckworth, Carlos Hernandez). They're still going to need a legitimate setup man for Brad Lidge. Dan Wheeler finished strong, but he's not the answer.
