Date:

Vinny Castilla will assume a special assistant front-office position with the Rockies after the season.

Castilla will spell Garrett Atkins at third base and Todd Helton at first from time to time in the final four weeks. He hit 191 home runs in his previous five seasons with Colorado from 1995-99.

Rockies purchased the contract of third baseman Vinny Castilla from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Castilla will probably get a couple of starts in home games once the Rockies are offically out of the race. In the meantime, he'll serve as an occasional pinch-hitter.

Vinny Castilla is the only September callup that will be joining the Rockies on Friday.

Outfielders Jeff Baker and Jeff Salazar and relief pitchers Nate Field and Mike Venafro will eventually join the team, but it might not be until after the current road trip. Of the group Baker and Field will have the best chance to have any fantasy value.

Vinny Castilla has gone 6-for-14 since reporting to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Castilla will be called up when rosters expand on Sept. 1, but he shouldn't have any fantasy value.

Rockies signed third baseman Vinny Castilla to a minor league contract.

Castilla will be brought up in September, which should be fine as long he doesn't actually play in games or anything like that. "In the brief history of our franchise, few players have endeared themselves to Rockies fans as much as Vinny," Rockies president Keli McGregor said. "Vinny and his family have lived in the area and been a part of our community for several years now. We are very excited that he will remain with the organization when his playing days are over, and he can continue to have a positive impact in the community." That should be the extent of his value.

Padres placed third baseman Vinny Castilla on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Finally. Castilla hit .232/.260/.319 with four homers and 23 RBI in 259 at-bats. He was better outside Petco, hitting .293/.315/.398, but he's just not an asset as a regular these days. The Padres will go with Mark Bellhorn and Geoff Blum at third base for now. They'll keep trying to upgrade before the deadline.

Vinny Castilla drove in three runs on two hits in a 7-3 win over the Angels on Sunday.

Brian Giles and Josh Bard added three hits apiece in the victory, while Bard and Khalil Greene each scored twice. Castilla has just 19 RBI in 188 at-bats this season.

Vinny Castilla returned to action on Wednesday and went 0-for-3 against the Rockies.

He missed two games with a bruised left elbow. Castilla finishes May at .178 with one extra-base hit and two RBI in 73 at-bats. He wasn't any good in April, either. The Padres need to stop playing him.

Vinny Castilla took batting practice on Tuesday and is expected back in the lineup on Wednesday.

Castilla missed a second straight game Tuesday with a bruised left elbow.

Vinny Castilla is considered day-to-day due to swelling in his left elbow.

Castilla was hit by a pitch in the elbow during Sunday's game against St. Louis. Mark Bellhorn could see get some starts at third while Castilla sits.

Vinny Castilla returned to action on Sunday and went 0-for-3 before being removed in a double-switch.

Castilla missed Saturday's game with a migraine. Manager Bruce Bochy put him right into the cleanup spot today, but he failed to respond and is now batting .221/.270/.269 in 145 at-bats. The Padres need to cut him and go in a different direction.

Vinny Castilla said he began losing his vision just before Friday night's game, then had a migraine so bad that he was taken to a hospital for an MRI exam.

Castilla was at the ballpark for Saturday's game, but he wasn't used. He appears to be day-to-day.
Sat, May 27, 2006 07:19:00 PM

Vinny Castilla sat in favor of Geoff Blum on Friday, and manager Bruce Bochy indicated that Mark Bellhorn would play third base on Sunday.

The Padres could improve themselves by releasing Castilla and calling up Justin Leone to share time at third base. Castilla is batting .225/.271/.275 with one homer and 10 RBI in 142 at-bats.
Sat, May 27, 2006 01:07:00 AM

Vinny Castilla went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Wednesday night. He's hitting .156 in 64 at-bats at Petco Park this season.

Mark Bellhorn and Justin Leone would both be upgrades over Castilla right now, though it figures to be at least a few more weeks before the Padres think about a permanent change. Castilla is hitting .349 on the road, so he still has a little something left. He's just not a quality regular these days.
