Red Sox designated shortstop Royce Clayton for assignment.
Clayton hit the jackpot and will get a World Series ring after going 0-for-6 with three strikeouts for the Red Sox in September. He was going to be a free agent anyway. Wed, Oct 31, 2007 03:32:00 AM

Red Sox purchased the contract of infielder Royce Clayton from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Clayton went 4-for-28 after joining Pawtucket last week. The Red Sox won't be looking to give him any starts, but he does make sense as an alternative to the left-handed-hitting Alex Cora in case anything happens to a middle infielder.

Red Sox signed infielder Royce Clayton to a minor league contract.

The Red Sox managed to fine one of the few guys out there with a weaker bat than Alex Cora. Clayton was cut by Toronto after hitting .254/.304/.344 in 189 at-bats. We'd rather see Jed Lowrie up getting meaningful at-bats in September.

Blue Jays released SS Royce Clayton.

Toronto designated Clayton for assignment on Friday and apparently didn't want to wait the full 10 days to see if someone would take Clayton and his salary off their hands. He may latch on somewhere as a utility man, but Clayton's days of starting should be over.

Blue Jays designated SS Royce Clayton for assignment.

Clayton signed a one-year deal worth $1 million this offseason and quickly lost the starting job to John McDonald. The 37-year-old figures to latch on somewhere as a bench player, but Toronto preferred a younger utility man in Ray Olmedo.

Blue Jays announced Thursday that they will designated SS Royce Clayton for assignment prior to Friday's game.

Signed to a one-year, $1 million deal this offseason, Clayton has lost the shortstop job to John McDonald after hitting just .254 with a 648 OPS in 69 games. Clayton figures to latch on somewhere as a utility man, although it may have to wait until he passes through waivers.

After coming up with four hits the last two days, Royce Clayton is making a third straight start at shortstop on Tuesday.

John McDonald had been getting most of the playing time recently, but the Jays apparently will ride Clayton while he's hot. He's all the way up to .250/.305/.249 for the season.

Royce Clayton went 0-for-5 on Wednesday and is without an RBI since May 26.

Clayton has just nine RBI, putting him on pace for 22 in 346 at-bats this season. If the Blue Jays are resigned to not getting any production at all out of shortstop, they might as well go to John McDonald, who at least is a superior defender.

Royce Clayton is back at shortstop Saturday after missing three games with a bruised foot.

Clayton lined a ball off his foot during Tuesday's game.

Royce Clayton is likely to miss a few days after lining a ball off his foot during Tuesday's game.

Clayton remained in initially, but he finally had to come out before the ninth inning. John McDonald will start at short while Clayton is out.

Royce Clayton went 0-for-3 on Wednesday, leaving him with a .143/.159/.167 line in 42 at-bats.

It hardly seems fair that pitchers are trying just as hard to retire Clayton as they do the rest of the Jays' hitters. If only they'd take, say, 5 mph off their fastballs for him, we're sure the 37-year-old could still be a perfectly respectable below average regular.

Royce Clayton went 0-for-3 on Saturday and is 4-for-26 this spring.

He's struck out eight times and walked once. Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said back when the shortstop was signed that Clayton wasn't going to be promised anything. However, there's been no indication this month that Clayton is involved in a competition for his job. Instead, manager John Gibbons has pretty much guaranteed that he'd be in the lineup on Opening Day.

Jays manager John Gibbons included Royce Clayton as his No. 9 hitter in unveiling his starting lineup Friday.

He was the heavy favorite going in, but Clayton wasn't supposed to be guaranteed of starting at shortstop. It's disappointing to see him handed the job already, especially with Jason Smith off to a much better start with the bat.

Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said Thursday that Royce Clayton won't be guaranteed a starting job entering the season.

It doesn't really matter whether it's Clayton or John McDonald. The Jays could bring in another shortstop to compete for time, but Ricciardi made it pretty clear he'd rather spend the money he has left on pitching. "It's just a matter of putting our resources toward pitching more so than another bat. We think our lineup is good. We've always liked [Julio] Lugo, but we'd rather spend the money on pitching if we could," Ricciardi said.

Blue Jays signed shortstop Royce Clayton, who had been with the Reds, to a one-year, %1.5 million contract.

There had to be some high-fives in the Red Sox and Yankees front offices today. The soon-to-be 37-year-old Clayton hit just .258/.307/.341 last season and no longer has more than average range. We imagine the Blue Jays would have done just as well with John McDonald at shortstop. Now that they have committed to Clayton, they should go ahead and non-tender McDonald and try to find a more offensive-minded utilityman. Detroit's Omar Infante would make a lot of sense.
