Russ Springer has decided to retire after 18 seasons.
Springer, 42, actually announced before the 2004 season that he was going to retire, but he wisely changed his mind and squeezed out a few more very good seasons in the bullpen. "There comes a time when you can ask only so much of your body physically, and you've got to stop beating it up," Springer said. The right-hander finishes his career with a 4.53 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 8.2 K/9 rate over 740 appearances. Sun, Jan 30, 2011 09:56:00 AM

Reds transferred RHP Russ Springer to the 60-day disabled list.

Springer underwent season-ending hip surgery last week. The move creates a spot on the 40-man roster for Corky Miller, who is expected to be added to the roster on Wednesday.

Russ Springer underwent season-ending hip surgery Monday.

The Reds are likely to place Springer on the 60-day disabled list in the next few days to open a spot on the 40-man roster. The veteran signed on with the Reds' Triple-A club in early July and made his way to the majors by the start of August. All in all, he allowed two hits and one earned run in two relief appearances. Springer may decide to retire this offseason.

Reds placed RHP Russ Springer on the 15-day disabled list with a hip injury.

The veteran had to leave Wednesday's game in the middle of an at-bat because of the ailment. It's not clear how long the injury will keep him out. Carlos Fisher was recalled from Triple-A to replace him in the bullpen.

Russ Springer will undergo an MRI on his hip after getting hurt during Wednesday's game.

The Enquirer's Jon Fayman believes Springer will go on the DL and that Aroldis Chapman is the top candidate to replace him in the bullpen.

Russ Springer told reporters after Wednesday's game that he exited in the middle of an at-bat because his hip flexor muscle "locked up."

"I don't think it's serious," Springer added. "I didn't know you had a muscle there." The veteran reliever is considered day-to-day for now.

The 41-year-old reliever was inked to a minor league contract two weeks ago and didn't allow a run in seven appearances with Louisville. Springer had a 4.11 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 57 innings last season between the A's and Rays. He will pitch in middle relief.

Reds signed RHP Russ Springer to a minor league contract.

The 41-year-old reliever has not pitched at all this year and will need around two weeks to build his endurance at Triple-A Louisville. Springer had a 4.11 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 57 innings last season between the A's and Rays. He will pitch in middle relief once he hits the bigs.

C. Trent Rosecrans of CNati.com reports that the Reds have agreed to terms on a contract with right-handed reliever Russ Springer.

The deal is expected to have a total worth of $850,000. Springer, 41, will head to Triple-A Louisville and work his way to the big leagues from there. He had a 4.11 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP and a 58/17 K/BB ratio in 57 innings (74 relief appearances) for the A's and Rays last season.

Russ Springer is still hoping to land a bullpen job this offseason.

Springer has drawn very little interest on the open market since the Rays declined him arbitration in early December. The 41-year-old righty posted a 4.11 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 58/17 K/BB ratio in 57 innings (74 games) last season but clubs are obviously scared of his age. Inking a minor league contract with the Cardinals might be his best bet.

The Cardinals have discussed the possibility of bringing back reliever Russ Springer, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Springer, 41, posted a respectable 4.11 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 58/17 K/BB ratio in 57 innings (74 games) last season and had ERAs of 2.18 and 2.33 in his two previous years with the Cardinals. It's not clear what his asking price might be but it's safe to assume he'd be interested in a return to St. Louis.

The Rays have declined to offer arbitration to RHP Russ Springer.

Tampa management waited until the last minute to decide on the course of action, which indicates they were wrestling with the decision and have a desire to retain him. The 41-year-old righty posted a 4.11 ERA and 11/3 K/BB ratio in 15 1/3 innings of relief with the Rays in 2009.

Rays claimed RHP Russ Springer off waivers from the Athletics.

It was a straight waiver claim by the Rays, with no player headed back to the Athletics. The 40-year old Springer compiled a 4.10 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 47/14 K/BB ratio in 41 2/3 innings (48 games) this season.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Russ Springer has been traded to the Rays.

Slusser writes that Springer is at the airport headed to Seattle in order to join his new team. She writes that a deal was worked out after Springer was claimed on waivers, but the parameters of the acquisition are not known at this time. Springer has a 4.10 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 47/14 K/BB ratio in 41 2/3 innings this season.
