Luis Mendoza allowed just two runs on eight hits over six innings in his start Sunday against the Athletics.
Mendoza earned his first win earlier this week, and has put together three straight quality starts. He would have been in line for his second win, but the Royals' bullpen allowed a home run to Yoenis Cespedes in the eighth inning that cost him the game. Mendoza has a 5.50 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) this season and will continue to serve as Kansas City's No. 5 starter. May 19 - 7:58 PM

Luis Mendoza gave up five runs -- three earned -- over six innings in Wednesday's loss to the Orioles.

Mendoza wasn't helped by his defense in the fifth, as the Orioles plated three runs with the help of two Alcides Escobar errors. However, he also walked three, struck out just two and served up a home run. Now with a 6.38 ERA and 1.46 WHIP, Mendoza needs to improve in a hurry to avoid being booted from the rotation. He's scheduled to face the Angels next.
May 8 - 9:47 PM

Luis Mendoza allowed six runs in four innings but took a no-decision as the Royals defeated the Rays on Wednesday.

Mendoza struggled out of the gate, giving up two solo home runs in the opening frame and allowing runs in each of the first four innings. The right-hander now owns a 7.00 ERA and can be ignored in basically all fantasy formats. He'll next face the Orioles on Tuesday.
May 1 - 11:46 PM

Luis Mendoza was smoked for eight runs (seven earned) in 5 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Blue Jays.

If you took a chance on Mendoza after he struck out seven batters over six innings of one-run ball last week against the Phillies, chances are you were pretty disappointed by this one. The 29-year-old gave up seven hits and three walks in the loss and is strictly an AL-only option. The Royals have two off-days next week, so they plan to skip Mendoza in the rotation.
Apr 12 - 11:50 PM

Luis Mendoza will have his next start skipped after taking his turn on Friday.

The Royals have three off-days in an eight-day period starting on Monday, so they'll take advantage and skip their No. 5 starter. Mendoza allowed one run over six innings in his lone start this season.
Apr 10 - 9:12 PM

Luis Mendoza limited the Phillies to one run over six innings Saturday but the Royals lost it late.

Mendoza won the final spot in the Royals rotation this spring and looked sharp in his 2013 debut on Saturday night in Philly. The 29-year-old walked three batters and struck out seven in his six innings. He may have a tougher go in his next start Friday against the Blue Jays.
Apr 6 - 9:59 PM

Luis Mendoza allowed six runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings in the Royals loss to the Brewers.

The outing raised Mendoza's spring ERA to a still-pristine 2.70, so it was just a small bump in the road for the 29-year-old. Mendoza was recently assured of the fifth spot in the Royals rotation. He's not someone to get too excited about, but he offers some upside late in AL-only leagues.
Mar 27 - 6:49 PM

Luis Mendoza has been awarded the fifth spot in the Royals' rotation.

Mendoza got the nod over veteran left-hander Bruce Chen, who will head to the bullpen. It's the right move, as the 29-year-old right-hander offers more upside at this point. He had a 4.23 ERA and 104/59 K/BB ratio in 166 innings over 25 starts and five relief appearances last season. The Royals figure to have better options later this summer, but he's worth owning in AL-only leagues for the time being.
Mar 26 - 11:26 AM

Luis Mendoza allowed no runs on four hits over five innings in Sunday's win over the White Sox.

It was his first outing since returning from the World Baseball Classic. He threw 63 pitches and finished with four strikeouts and just one walk. Mendoza now has a 0.82 ERA in three appearances (two starts) this spring. The Royals are planning to use him as a long reliever to start the season.
Mar 17 - 7:04 PM

The Kansas City Star expects Luis Mendoza to open the season in the Royals' bullpen.

Mendoza was recently named the MVP of the Caribbean World Series and has put together a strong offseason, but is still a longshot to win a spot in the starting rotation. He'll also miss three weeks of spring training when he pitches for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. The Royals will likely carry Mendoza on their Opening Day roster as a long reliever.
Feb 17 - 5:28 PM

Luis Mendoza allowed just one run on six hits in Wednesday's season finale, but received zero runs of support in Kansas City's 1-0 loss to the Tigers.

Mendoza struck out six and walked three in falling to 8-10. A hard-luck night for those who needed a win in their fantasy playoffs, but the quality start was Mendoza's fourth straight, and 14th of the season. He finishes 2012 the owner of a 4.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 104/59 K/BB ratio through 166 innings. Not bad considering he entered the year the owner of a career 7.36 ERA through 99 innings. Provided he's re-signed, Mendoza should open 2013 in Kansas City's rotation.

Luis Mendoza turned in a stellar performance in Friday's victory over the Indians, surrendering two runs on eight hits over his six innings.

Mendoza punched out three and issued two walks on the night. For all of the rotational woes that the Royals have had on the season, Mendoza has actually done a decent job, compiling an 8-9 record, 4.44 ERA and 92/55 K/BB ratio through 152 innings. He'll look to continue his recent success when he takes on the Tigers in Detroit on Wednesday.

Luis Mendoza (throat) has officially been cleared to start Friday against the Indians.

Mendoza was scratched from Wednesday's start due to strep throat, but it appears to no longer be an issue. "He feels good, and he looks good," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He feels strong. You can normally tell if a guy is not feeling good or if he’s weak. We don’t see any signs of that. He looks 100 percent normal and natural."

Luis Mendoza (throat) is tentatively scheduled to start Friday against the Indians.

Mendoza was scratched from Wednesday's start due to strep throat, but he threw a light bullpen session before the game and felt a lot better. Will Smith will move up a day to start if it turns out Mendoza can't go.
Wed, Sep 19, 2012 05:18:00 PM

Luis Mendoza has been scratched from Wednesday's start against the White Sox due to a throat ailment.

"[Mendoza] came in today and was feeling horrible," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "His throat was all infected. We think it's strep throat. We sent him to the doctor." The righty could rejoin the rotation this weekend if he feels up to it, or the Royals could just wind up skipping his start. Bruce Chen will move up to start Wednesday, with Jeremy Guthrie getting the ball Thursday.
