Mike Piazza announced his retirement from baseball on Tuesday.
Piazza hoped to play this year, but serious interest never materialized from a major league team. The future Hall of Famer ends his career with a .308/.377/.545 line, 427 homers and 1,335 RBI in 1,912 games over 16 seasons. He was named to 12 All-Star teams, he set the record for homers by a catcher and he twice led the NL in OPS+. His .362-40-124 season in 1997 was maybe the greatest offensive year ever for a catcher. The Reds have shown "mild" interest in Mike Piazza.

The Reds are looking for a right-handed bat that can add some pop to their lineup, which has struggled against lefties. The Yankees are also thought to be interested in the veteran free agent.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Mike Piazza may retire if he doesn't find a job by the end of spring training.

Few teams were linked to Piazza throughout the winter after he hit just .275/.313/.414 while missing half of last season with a shoulder injury.

Accroding to the Miami Herald, agent Dan Lozano told the Marlins that Mike Piazza would like to finish his career with Florida.

Even though they have a weak catching situation, the Marlins don't appear to have any interest. Bringing in Piazza might cause fans to show up, which wouldn't be good at all for their attempts to land a new ballpark.

With no interest shown in him at the winter meetings, free agent Mike Piazza might be considering retirement, the San Francisco Chronicle says.

Piazza was offered arbitration by the A's, but that was apparently part of a previous agreement. He's repaying the A's and netting them an extra draft pick because they honored his wishes not to be traded to Minnesota during the season.
Fri, Dec 7, 2007 01:00:00 PM's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Padres could bring back Mike Piazza if Michael Barrett turns down their offer of arbitration.

Padres pitchers don't give their catchers a chance to throw out basestealers anyway, so why not give Piazza another try? Barrett, who would only be a part-timer in San Diego, is drawing interest from the Marlins, Rays and Orioles. Baltimore probably wouldn't put in a bid unless Ramon Hernandez was traded.

Athletics offered arbitration to designated hitter Mike Piazza and outfielder Shannon Stewart; declined to offer arbitration to outfielder Jeff DaVanon.

The offer to Piazza is very surprising. We're guessing they talked with Piazza in advanced and were assured that he'd decline the offer. Both Piazza and Stewart are Type-B free agents. DaVanon wasn't ranked.

Free agent Mike Piazza reportedly will consider going to Japan if he can't land a guaranteed deal in the U.S.

Barry Bonds' apparent removal from the market would seem to help Piazza's chances of landing a DH job, but no one seems interested so far. Perhaps that will begin to change next month.

Mike Piazza went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the A's to a 7-4 win over the Mariners on Tuesday.

Seattle has fallen 6 1/2 games back of the Yankees in the wild card. The A's have just four fewer wins than the Mariners now. Piazza is expected to play less during the final three weeks now that Daric Barton is up. He started against lefty Jarrod Washburn tonight, but he'll sit against some righties.

Mike Piazza went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a sac fly Monday versus the Angels.

Piazza is 9-for-23 with a couple of homers over his last five games. It looks like his power is coming back now after he struggled to muscle the ball out of the park in his first month back from a shoulder injury.

Mike Piazza had four hits, including a homer and two doubles, and drove in a season-high five runs in Thursday's rout.

Piazza was hitting just .197 with three extra-base hits in August. If he can get hot over the next few days, he still might be a trade candidate prior to Sept. 1. If he stays in Oakland, he could really use a big finish to guarantee that there will be a few teams interested in him this winter.

Mike Piazza missed the cycle by a double Thursday versus the White Sox.

Piazza had two chances to get the double, but his flare to center was caught in the eighth and he struck out in the 10th. Piazza's triple was just the eighth of his career. He entered the day without an extra-base hit this month.

Mike Piazza has reportedly cleared waivers, meaning the A's are free to trade him to any team.

Piazza is due to make about $2.6 million over the remainder of the season, so the A's may have to eat some salary to get a deal done. However, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Twins have heard that "Piazza has a gentleman's agreement with GM Billy Beane that will keep Oakland from trading him against his will."

Mike Piazza drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th as Oakland survived a monumental collapse, but recovered to win 9-7 on Monday.

Piazza had three hits in all and scored once as he raised his BA to .296. In a game in which seven Oakland pitchers combined for 21 Ks, the team blew a 7-0 lead and allowed Texas to force extra innings.

The Twins are showing interest in Mike Piazza, but a deal is unlikely to get done, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

A deal with the Angels also seems unlikely.
