Red Sox designated first baseman-outfielder David McCarty for assignment.

McCarty, who had just four at-bats this season, had to see the writing on the wall when the Red Sox announced the signing of John Olerud. Olerud will eventually take McCarty's role. For now, however, Kevin Youkilis will back up Kevin Millar at first base.

The Red Sox are expected to designate David McCarty for assignment later today.

Boston needs to create a spot on the 40-man roster for tonight's starter, Jeremi Gonzalez. McCarty will either be traded, released or placed on waivers. If he makes it through waivers, he will have the option of becoming a free agent or reporting to Triple-A.

Red Sox purchased the contract of first baseman-outfielder David McCarty.

Boston's roster is set, with McCarty claiming the final spot on the bench. Blaine Neal has made the team as a reliever, but the Red Sox will likely try to sneak him through waivers after Curt Schilling comes off the DL.

David McCarty went 3-for-3 with three RBI and robbed the Diamondbacks of a homer while playing left field to lead the Red Sox to a win tonight.

McCarty had a double for his first extra-base hit in 38 at-bats. He had already earned himself a roster spot despite entering the night with a .143 average.

David McCarty is still on track to fill the final spot on Boston's roster.

Manager Terry Francona has said that Kevin Youkilis has already made the team, but he also said that he will not use Youkilis as a defensive replacement at first base. That would seem to keep the door open for McCarty, whose main competition for the 25th spot is George Lombard.

David McCarty appears to have the inside track for one of Boston's two open bench jobs.

McCarty would start occasionally against southpaws and be Kevin Millar's late-inning defensive replacement at first base. He has thrown three side sessions this spring and is planning to once again be Boston's emergency 12th pitcher. In addition to hitting .258/.327/.404 in 168 plate appearances last year, McCarty also pitched 3 2/3 innings while allowing just one run.

David McCarty is expected to make a few appearances on the mound this spring as he again attempts to become Boston's 25th man.

The Roberto Petagine addition makes McCarty a big longshot to make the team, even if his ability to pitch would give him some extra value off the bench.

Red Sox re-signed first baseman David McCarty to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

McCarty could be Boston's 25th man if either Kevin Millar or Doug Mientkiewicz is traded. If so, he'll get a $550,000 contract. The Red Sox are also facing a midnight deadline to re-sign Pedro Astacio, but it doesn't appear that anything will happen there.

The Red Sox likely will re-sign David McCarty to a one-year deal after moving either Doug Mientkiewicz or Kevin Millar.

McCarty gave some thought to retirement, but he'll try to win a spot on the Red Sox bench in spring training. The team currently has Kevin Youkilis penciled in as the backup first baseman.

David McCarty struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief today against the Orioles.

If McCarty can strengthen his arm this winter, maybe he still can contribute as a two-way player. He just couldn't handle the workload when he tried it during the spring.

Red Sox activated first baseman David McCarty from 15-day disabled list.

McCarty will do some pinch-hitting against left-handers. He's probably not going to make more than one or two starts at first base over the rest of the season.

David McCarty (wrist) went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in his first game of a medical rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket.

With the injury to Doug Mientkiewicz, the Red Sox may choose to accelerate McCarty's return to active duty. As such, he could be activated before September 1st if the Boston braintrust feels the team urgently needs a defensive replacement at first base over the next few days.

David McCarty swung a bat for the first time since he was placed on the disabled list last week with a Ganglion cyst in his right wrist.

McCarty will return to action as pinch-hitter in September, and is not worthy of a fantasy roster spot.

Red Sox placed first baseman David McCarty on the 15-day disabled list with a ganglion cyst in his right wrist.

This will allow the Sox to avoid designating McCarty for assignment. He'll return once rosters expand.
