Nationals released infielder Tony Womack.
Womack looked like a pretty good candidate to make the team before the Ronnie Belliard signing ruined his chances. He was 0-for-7 this spring. Thu, Mar 8, 2007 03:29:00 PM

Nationals signed infielder Tony Womack to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Womack actually hit better than his career numbers in brief stints with the Cubs and Reds last season, batting .265/.342/.353 in 68 at-bats. He hit just .249/.276/.280 with the Yankees in 2005. The Nationals should be able to do better.

The Nationals are set to sign Tony Womack to a minor league contract and invite him to spring training.

To think there could be times that the Nationals could have Womack, Nook Logan and Cristian Guzman all in the lineup at the same time. Never has there been the potential for so many outs to be made so quickly.

Cubs designated infielder Tony Womack for assignment.

Womack was optioned to Triple-A on Tuesday after hitting .280/.333/.360 in a month for the Cubs.

Cubs optioned second baseman Tony Womack to Triple-A Iowa.

At .280/.333/.360, Womack was no better or worse than the Cubs should have anticipated. There wasn't much reason for him to stick around with Todd Walker back at second base now.

Tony Womack (back) felt much better on Sunday.

"He's much better today [Sunday] than yesterday,'' manager Dusty Baker said. Womack is considered day-to-day and will likely avoid a trip to the disabled list.

Tony Womack left Saturday's game in the third inning with lower back spasms.

Womack reached on a bloop single, then took off toward second on a grounder to shortstop by Henry Blanco. He never made it. Womack had to be carried off the field after collapsing with the spasm. Neifi Perez took over at second base against the Twins.

Tony Womack went 2-for-4 with a solo homer than gave the Cubs their only run tonight in a loss to the Reds.

The homer was his first since July 28, 2004. The previous one also came against the Reds.

Tony Womack singled, walked, and scored a pair of runs in a 9-6 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.

Womack also added his first stolen base of the season. He's 5-for-21 with five walks for the Cubs and is batting .341 overall, so Womack will probably remain in the Cubs' lineup on a fairly regular basis. He's certainly worth using in NL-only leagues at the moment.

Manager Dusty Baker is considering moving Tony Womack to lead off and bumping Juan Pierre to the No. 2 spot.

"As far as stealing, Juan might have the nod for speed," Baker said. "I've got to see how good Tony is running before I can make the decision." We can't imagine this would last, but Womack has some fantasy value right now.

Tony Womack went 4-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI in his first start of the season with the Cubs today.

This will probably earn him a month or two of time as a regular, even though nearly everyone was hitting well with the team scoring 12 runs today. Womack should be owned in most NL-only leagues since the Cubs will give him at least semi-regular playing time.

Cubs purchased the contract of infielder Tony Womack from Triple-A Iowa.

The only surprise here is that Dusty Baker doesn't have Womack in today's starting lineup. Neifi Perez has drawn the assignment at second base. Womack will probably play against a lot of right-handers until Derrek Lee returns. He should have some value in NL-only leagues. Jerry Hairston Jr. and Perez will see fewer at-bats.

Tony Womack could be the starting second basemen for the Cubs by this weekend.

"I'm hearing good reports on him,'' manager Dusty Baker said. "I'm hearing he is playing pretty good. We'll address that when I get home. It's not a bad option.'' Neifi Perez and Jerry Hairston Jr. are just 6-for-44 with two runs scored and two RBI in the past 14 games, so it's easy to see why Baker wants to make a change. Of course, Womack will just be another liability.

The Cubs have signed Tony Womack to a minor league contract.

Womack will be assigned to Triple-A Iowa. He hit .307 last season for St. Louis, but struggled in nine games with Cincinnati this season.

Reds released second baseman Tony Womack.

The Reds tried to trade Womack, but no team was interested in paying more than the minimum for the 36-year-old. He'll probably land a bench job somewhere, and he may have some fantasy value once it happens.
