Royals signed infielder Alex S. Gonzalez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Gonzalez, 33, announced his retirement last May after starting out 4-for-36 with the Phillies. It's not much of a surprise to see him back, and he joined the one team he could potentially start for, though the Royals are certain to give Angel Berroa one more chance to keep his job. Phillies announced the retirement of infielder Alex Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was undoubtedly frustrated by the lack of playing time in Philadelphia, as well as his 4-for-36 start. Still, it seems unlikely that this will be a permanent retirement for the 33-year-old. Chris Coste will replace him on the Phillies' bench and act mostly as a pinch-hitter. If Gonzalez's career is truly over, he ends up at .243/.302/.391 with 137 homers in 1,396 games over 13 seasons.

Phillies signed infielder Alex S. Gonzalez, who had been with the Devil Rays, to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

He can earn up to $1 million in performance bonuses, getting the full amount if he has 130 starts and 500 plate appearances. Gonzalez will serve as a backup at shortstop and third and may see some time in the outfield. There's a chance he'll get enough at-bats to produce a little fantasy value, but the Phillies will probably give Abraham Nunez a lot more playing time than Gonzalez initially.

The Phillies are close to signing free-agent infielder Alex Gonzalez.

This is a team that should be looking to add a fifth outfielder or a right-handed-hitting first baseman. A fourth utility infielder hardly seems like a priority, though Gonzalez probably is an upgrade over Abraham Nunez, Tomas Perez and Matt Kata. His addition could result in the release of Perez, who is entering the second year of a two-year deal. When are teams ever going to learn not to give multiyear deals to utilitymen?

Infielder Alex Gonzalez and first baseman Eduardo Perez rejected the Devil Rays' offer of arbitration.

Gonzalez seems unlikely to land a starting job elsewhere, though he will be in some demand as a utilityman. Perez agreed in advance to decline the offer.

Devil Rays offered arbitration to INF Alex Gonzalez, 1B Travis Lee and 1B Eduardo Perez.

All three players may have agreed in advance to decline arbitration. None will require draft-pick compensation.

Alex Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with two RBI today to help the Rays edge the Orioles 6-5.

Nick Green shouldn't play against righties and the Rays wouldn't bring up any alternatives to play third base, so Gonzalez is playing fairly regularly right now. He's batting .252 with three homers and 14 RBI in 131 at-bats since the beginning of August.

Alex Gonzalez, coming off a terrible game in place of Julio Lugo on Tuesday, went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Rays to a 7-6 win over the Yankees tonight.

Gonzalez had an RBI single in the second, a two-run homer in the sixth and an RBI double in the eighth. He was denied a fifth RBI when the double bounced over the wall, preventing Jonny Gomes from scoring the go-ahead run from first base. Gomes went on to score on a Tanyon Sturtze wild pitch. Gonzalez went 0-for-4 and committed two errors on Tuesday.

Alex Gonzalez committed three errors today in his second start at third base since coming off the disabled list.

It figures to be a few days before he gets into another game. Gonzalez has committed eight errors this season, all of them coming at third base.

Devil Rays activated infielder Alex Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list.

Gonzalez will resume his reserve role and play third base when Nick Green or Jorge Cantu is out of the lineup.

Alex Gonzalez (neck) is close to returning to action.

The Rays think he'll be activated on Monday.

Lou Pinella says that Alex Gonzalez is ''a few days away'' from returning from a neck strain.

He took batting practice yesterday, but hasn't played since June 25.

Alex Gonzalez said the strain in muscles near his neck is getting better, but he is not ready to return.

He's unsure of when he'll return, and while it could be Thursday, that would be surprising. He is planning to get X-rays ''to see if everything else is okay, the joints and the vertebrae, to make sure everything else is lined up.'' Either way, it sounds like he'll be back soon unless the x-rays reveal damage.

Devil Rays placed third baseman Alex Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 26, with a strained neck.

The Rays didn't replace him with an infielder, so it looks like Julio Lugo, Jorge Cantu and Nick Green will start every game through the All-Star break. If someone gets hurt during the middle of the game, the Rays would likely put Aubrey Huff or Eduardo Perez at third base and shuffle accordingly.
Sun, Jul 3, 2005 12:41:00 PM

Alex Gonzalez was scratched from tonight's lineup due to a stiff neck.

Gonzalez was going to play shortstop, with Julio Lugo getting a break as the designated hitter. Lugo went back to shortstop with Gonzalez out.
