Devil Rays released catcher Charles Johnson.
Johnson remains a better bet than a few backups, but he might have as much trouble finding work as Benito Santiago has. He hit .196/.327/.283 in 46 AB for the Rays. Kevin Cash will take over as Toby Hall's backup. Mon, Jun 13, 2005 04:42:00 PM

Charles Johnson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double tonight against the Orioles.

Since the Rays exploded for 12 runs tonight, we wouldn't be surprised to see Johnson back in their tomorrow. He still shouldn't become the Rays' starting catcher at any point this season.

Charles Johnson is expected to start at catcher today.

Toby Hall will get the day off. ``We've got to get him in the lineup,'' manager Lou Piniella said. ``He hasn't played in a while, and we can't wait much longer. Let's hope he swings the bat a little bit for us. We could use it.''

Charles Johnson returned to the Devil Rays yesterday, but declined to explain the reason for his personal leave.

Although they placed him on the restricted list today, the Rays are optimistic Charles Johnson will return next week.

Manager Lou Piniella said Johnson might return as soon as Tampa Bay's next series, which begins Tuesday. ''It looks like this will not be a long, drawn-out situation,'' GM Chuck LaMar said. ''I think in the next several days, he will get things resolved and be back with the club. ... He indicated he will be back here shortly, in the next few days.''

The Rays don't yet know when Johnson will rejoin the team. He's in Miami handling a personal matter.

Charles Johnson, who was expected to make his first start today, requested and was granted a leave of absence from the Devil Rays to handle a personal matter.

LaMar declined to discuss specifics of Johnson's request, but did say it was not a bereavement situation and that Johnson had not given any indications that he's considering retirement. If Johnson doesn't return after Thursday's off day, he'll be replaced on the restricted list. With Kevin Cash on the DL, the Rays would call up Pete LaForest to act as Toby Hall's backup.
Wed, Apr 6, 2005 04:27:00 PM

Devil Rays signed catcher Charles Johnson to a one-year contract.

Johnson will serve as Toby Hall's backup and could steal more playing time away from Hall than Kevin Cash would have. He may not hit .240, but he should show enough power to be a solid $1 catcher.

Red Sox acquired C Charles Johnson, LHP Chris Narveson and cash considerations from the Rockies for RHP Byung-Hyun Kim; designated Johnson for assignment.

Johnson is set to make more than Kim this season, so the included cash will even things up. The Red Sox immediately let Johnson go, and once he clears waivers, he'll be free to make his way to whatever team he wishes. Tampa Bay is the probable destination.
