Date:

Jason Giambi (back) is staying on the disabled list.

Giambi was aiming to return Tuesday but he's apparently not ready. The Indians have called up Yan Gomes and Omir Santos to provide depth at first base and catcher.
Apr 9 - 3:40 PM

Jason Giambi (back) will indeed be activated Tuesday.

It's the first day he's eligible to return from the disabled list. Giambi will serve as a part-time designated hitter and left-handed bench bat this season for the Indians. He is doubtful to hold significant fantasy value.
Apr 6 - 5:54 PM

Indians purchased the contract of 1B/DH Jason Giambi from Triple-A Columbus; placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

Giambi will be eligible to return on April 9 and the Indians are confident he'll be ready by then. The 42-year-old slugger is expected to function as a left-handed bat off the bench this season for Cleveland.
Mar 25 - 5:08 PM

Jason Giambi delivered a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Dodgers.

Giambi entered Wednesday's action hitless over his first 11 at-bats this spring. On the bright side, he also had three walks. The 42-year-old should provide some punch off the Indians' bench this season, but he likely won't get enough at-bats to even be relevant in most AL-only fantasy leagues.
Mar 6 - 5:48 PM

Indians signed 1B/DH Jason Giambi to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

If he makes the roster, he'll earn a base salary of $750,000 plus incentives. Troy Renck of the Denver Post was the first to break the story. After the 2012 season, Giambi wasn't sure what direction his career path would take. He interviewed for the Rockies managerial vacancy, then considered becoming a hitting coach, but just couldn't hang 'em up just yet. He'll compete for a bench spot with the Indians, who are lacking in left-handed power threats.
Feb 9 - 10:31 PM

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that Jason Giambi is close to signing a minor league deal with the Indians.

The deal would come with an invitation to spring training and an actual chance at making the major league roster. Giambi hit just .225/.372/.303 with one home run and eight RBI in 113 plate appearances with the Rockies in 2012. He could still be valuable as a source of left-handed power off the bench.
Feb 9 - 9:48 PM

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, free agent Jason Giambi is "still hopeful of playing this season."

Giambi was in the running for the Rockies' managerial gig but didn't get it and is now searching for a spot on a major league bench. He'll probably have to accept a minor league contract but he should find a team.
Jan 8 - 9:50 PM

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that three to four teams have expressed interest in Jason Giambi.

Giambi didn't land the Rockies' managerial gig and wasn't interested in an offer to become the club's hitting coach. So now he'll try to continue his playing career. The 41-year-old batted .225/.372/.303 with one homer and eight RBI in 113 plate appearances this summer.

Jason Giambi's agent, Joel Wolfe, said "several teams" have expressed interest in his client.

Wolfe says that Giambi still wants to play, so it sounds like he's leaning toward turning down the Rockies' offer to be their hitting coach. The 41-year-old batted .225/.372/.303 this season for the Rockies.

Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd told Troy Renck of the Denver Post that the club hopes Jason Giambi will consider being their hitting coach.

Giambi was one of the finalists for the manager job, but the Rockies settled on Walt Weiss as their new skipper on Wednesday night. "We consider him a Rockie, we hope this is the spot he will consider," said O'Dowd. "He was very impressive in his interview for the manager's job." Giambi previously said that he would only retire to become the manager, but Renck hears that the 41-year-old is prepared to listen about the hitting coach job while seeing how things develop in the free agent market. It's unlikely he will return to the Rockies as a player.

According to the Denver Post, Jason Giambi is no longer in the running for the Rockies' managerial vacancy.

The race is down to former Rockies shortstop Walt Weiss and current Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams. A final decision is expected to be made by the end of this week. Giambi will presumably now choose to continue his playing career, though probably not in Colorado. The veteran slugger is a free agent.

Jason Giambi is still weighing his options on whether to play or manage this coming season.

The Rockies are only considering him as a manager at this time and probably won't offer him a contract if he decides he wants to continue his playing career. Giambi is one of four finalists for Colorado's managerial opening.

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, Jason Giambi remains "firmly in the mix" for the Rockies' managerial job.

Giambi was interviewed on Thursday and the Rockies are reportedly intrigued by the idea of hiring him as their next manager. An official decision has yet to be made, but Giambi and bench coach Tom Runnells are the only confirmed candidates. Renck speculates that Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach, Indians coach Sandy Alomar Jr., and Oakland third base coach Mike Gallego are among those who could receive interest if the Rockies search outside the organization.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that Jason Giambi will interview for the Rockies' managerial vacancy.

No date has been scheduled, but Giambi will be the last in-house candidate interviewed before the Rockies begin to look outside the organization. Bench coach Tom Runnells and Triple-A manager Stu Cole have already been interviewed. Giambi, 41, has never coached at any level, but is beloved by current and former teammates alike. He underwent hernia surgery last week to leave open the option of playing in 2013.
