Blue Jays reinstated outfielder Shannon Stewart from the disabled list and released him outright.
Stewart has been on the DL with a high ankle sprain since early June and batted just .240/.325/.303 in 52 games prior to the injury. With Vernon Wells back, Adam Lind now entrenched as the starting left fielder, and the Blue Jays out of the playoff hunt, they had little use for the 34-year-old Stewart. He may land somewhere as a part-time player, but his days as a regular should be over. Mon, Aug 11, 2008 01:26:00 PM

Shannon Stewart said that doctors told him he'd need at least 15 days, and possibly longer, to rehab his high ankle sprain.

"I tore some ligaments inside, so I just have to be careful," Stewart said. "They said I have to really strengthen the area, just to make sure that when I come back, I don't reinjure it." He hasn't resumed baseball activities yet.

According to the Toronto Star, Shannon Stewart (ankle) "won't be returning to the lineup anytime soon."

A high-ankle sprain tends to sideline players for 4-6 weeks and the Blue Jays have little reason to rush him back. "It's a bad sprain, he'll probably be out a while," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said.

Blue Jays placed outfielder Shannon Stewart on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle.

The Jays are calling it a high ankle sprain, so he apparently goes from being day-to-day to out four-to-six weeks. It's barely a loss for the Jays on the field. They'll go with Brad Wilkerson versus righties and Kevin Mench versus lefties in left field. Adam Lind may be called up if Wilkerson continues to slump.

Shannon Stewart is day-to-day after coming out of Saturday's game with a sprained right ankle.

He'll probably get at least Sunday off. With Vernon Wells back, there's no reason to use Stewart against right-handers anyway.

Shannon Stewart left Saturday's game in the first inning with an apparent ankle injury.

Vernon Wells won't have to wait until Sunday after all. He entered the game in Stewart's place. If Stewart lands on the DL, it might be a good thing for the Jays. He's been utilized as an everyday leadoff man for the team lately even though he's struggled all season, especially against righties.

Shannon Stewart went 0-for-4 on Tuesday, snapping his hitting streak at 11 games.

Stewart had four runs scored, three RBI and three walks during the streak, so it's not like he was striking fear into the hearts of AL pitchers. He's been quite a liability as the Jays' primary left fielder this year.

Shannon Stewart hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the tenth inning which proved to be the game winner as the Blue Jays beat the Indians on Monday night.

If the Indians could have scored once in the first nine innings of this game, we'd be going to bed with the Blue Jays on a 31-inning scoreless streak. Stewart went 1-for-3 on the night, and is hitting just .220 on the season. Even with Vernon Wells out, his job appears anything but secure at the moment.

Designated hitter Shannon Stewart went 0-for-4 as the Jays were routed on Saturday.

The Jays brought in Brad Wilkerson and Kevin Mench with the intention of giving Stewart fewer at-bats, but now it looks like they'll continue playing him regularly after losing Vernon Wells. With a .216 average and just six runs scored, three extra-base hits and six RBI in 88 at-bats, he's been one of the AL's worst players so far, and it's not like he still has his old upside. If the Jays hope to have any chance, they should just bite the bullet and sign Barry Bonds.

Shannon Stewart finished 2-for-3 and drove in the Jays' only two runs Friday night.

Stewart, DHing tonight, singled to center in the first, driving in Scott Rolen and Vernon Wells. He's hitting .226 with only six RBI in 62 at-bats.

Shannon Stewart, missed two games with a sore groin, returned to action on Monday and went 0-for-4 with a walk.

Stewart is hitting just .211/.326/.263 with three runs scored in 13 games. It's a good thing that he doesn't have a vesting option for next year. Frank Thomas, as slow as he is, managed seven runs in 16 games despite batting fifth. Stewart has hit first or second most of the time.

Shannon Stewart is sitting out Saturday because of a sore groin.

It's been bothering him for a few days now, but he was expected to play left field today after the Jays benched Frank Thomas. Instead, Joe Inglett got the nod. Stewart is day-to-day.

Shannon Stewart went 1-for-4 with two RBI Friday.

Stewart led off for the Blue Jays with David Eckstein getting the night off. Stewart is hitting .235 with four RBI and should continue to split time in left with Matt Stairs.

Blue Jays purchased the contract of outfielder Shannon Stewart from Triple-A Syracuse.

Stewart is expected to start in left field and bat second in Monday's opener.

Shannon Stewart collected hits in both of his at-bats and drove in a run Saturday as the Jays topped the Phillies 5-3.

Stewart upped his average to .250 and now has a whopping two RBI in 48 at-bats. Despite his lack of success this month, the Jays commmitted to him when they opted to cut Reed Johnson. He'll be used pretty regularly early on because of Matt Stairs' sore hip, and the plan is for him to bat second due to Scott Rolen's injury.
