Mike Sweeney will announce his retirement at the Royals' spring training complex in Surprise, Arizona Friday.
It will likely involve him signing a one-day contract so he can retire as a member of the organization he came up with. He also might accept some sort of front office job with the Royals, which is something that's been mentioned as a possibility once his playing days were over. Sweeney will retire as a career .297/.366/.486 hitter with 215 home runs and 909 RBI over 16 big league seasons. Knee and back problems kept him from having an even better career. Mike Sweeney hasn't given up hope of playing in 2011.

Sweeney, 37, continues to work out and said his "primary focus is playing in 2011." He added that his agent has had conversations with three teams but indicated that he'd only consider playing for a contender. Sweeney also has had multiple offers to become a broadcaster or join teams in a front office or coaching role, offers he'll have to consider if he doesn't get an opportunity soon to join someone as a player. He hasn't played in 75 games since 2005.

Seattle received cash considerations from Philadelphia for the early August trade of Mike Sweeney.

The two sides could not agree on a player to be named later so a predetermined cash payment will head Seattle's way. Sweeney posted a .695 OPS in 58 plate appearances down the stretch for the Phillies.

In his first start as a Phillie, Mike Sweeney went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI in a comeback win over the Mets.

Sweeney was immediately inserted into the cleanup spot and got a huge eighth-inning rally started off with a single off flamethrowing reliever Bobby Parnell. Manager Charlie Manuel remembers Sweeney from his days with the Indians and respects him as a professional hitter. Look for Sweeney to get the majority of at-bats at first base while Ryan Howard (ankle) is out.

Phillies acquired 1B Mike Sweeney from the Mariners for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Sweeney will immediately take over starting first base duties in Philadelphia, allowing Cody Ransom and Ross Gload to slide back into a utility roles. He hasn't done much offensively this season in Seattle, but perhaps he will be rejuvenated in joining a playoff race. The 37-year-old may be a decent option in NL-only leagues now that he's out of pitcher-friendly Safeco Field, but he will serve merely as a pinch-hitter once Ryan Howard (ankle) is back to full health.

Jon Paul Morosi of reports that the Mariners are working on a trade that will send Mike Sweeney to the Phillies.

Sweeney can play first base in Philadelphia while Ryan Howard nurses a badly sprained left ankle. The 37-year-old veteran is batting just .263 with an .802 OPS for the Mariners this season, but he would at least provide a reasonable alternative to Ross Gload and Cody Ransom.

Mike Sweeney left Monday's minor league rehab game with Triple-A Tacoma due to an apparent leg injury.

Sweeney was limping after hitting into a double play in the fourth inning. This was the seventh game of his rehab assignment, as he works his way back from lower back inflammation.

Mike Sweeney (back) is scheduled to take batting practice Thursday.

If he wakes up Friday without any abnormal pain or discomfort, Sweeney will be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. The veteran has been on the 15-day disabled list since late June due to a back injury.

Mariners placed designated hitter Mike Sweeeney on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 26, with back spasms.

Sweeney made it through just one game at first base before requiring his second DL stint of the month. He's been productive in his 99 at-bats for the Mariners this year, hitting .263/.327/.475, but he needs to be handled very carefully.

Mike Sweeney, due to start at first base for a second straight day, was scratched from Saturday's lineup.

No word yet on the injury. But the Mariners should know by now that Sweeney simply isn't capable of playing the field with any regularity. Josh Wilson will play first base in his place.

Mariners activated DH Mike Sweeney from the 15-day disabled list.

As expected. Sweeney returns to a .258/.323/.483 batting line to go along with six homers (tied for the team lead) and 16 RBI.

Mike Sweeney (back) is expected to come off the disabled list for Friday's opener against the Reds.

Sweeney has been sidelined since June 2 due to lower back inflammation. The sad part is that he is tied with Milton Bradley for the team lead in home runs with six. Matt Tuiasosopo is expected to be sent back down to the minor leagues upon his return.

Mariners placed DH Mike Sweeney on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 3, with lower back inflammation.

Such is life for 36-year-old major leaguers. Sweeney has been his old consistent self at the plate this year, batting .258/.323/.483 with six home runs in less than 90 at-bats, but this Achilles injury may take some time to heal. Milton Bradley should see more time at DH moving forward.

Mike Sweeney, who had been out with a tight Achilles tendon, returned to action as the starting designated hitter on Sunday.

Sweeney went 1-for-5 with a single and the Achilles shouldn't be an issue going forward.
