Darin Erstad is no longer a candidate for the Dodgers' opening at manager.
Erstad took himself out of the running on Saturday, telling ESPN in a text message it was a "very hard" decision. He'll remain head coach at the University of Nebraska. That leaves Bud Black, Gabe Kapler and Dave Roberts as the top remaining candidates. Of those three, only Black has prior managing experience. The Dodgers could make their choice by the end of next week. Sat, Nov 14, 2015 08:03:00 PM

Darin Erstad told the Jamestown Sun that he has decided to retire.

"I’m done," said Erstad, who turned 36 years old earlier this month. "I had my time. I always said, ‘When I’m done, I’m done.’ ... I’m good." Erstad sought out a job this winter, and even drew interest from the Marlins, among other teams, however he was unable to land a gig. The two-time All-Star and three-time AL Gold Glove winner hangs it up with a .282 lifetime batting average to go along with 1,697 career hits over 14 major league seasons.

Darin Erstad is still hoping to land a job before spring training.

Erstad had an ugly .194/.268/.328 batting line last year and turns 36 this June. "There is nowhere to find at-bats," Erstad said in an email to "I have a hard time justifying leaving my family for seven or eight days and getting three pinch-hit ABs. I have had an open mind all winter and continue to have that. I am at peace with whatever happens."

Darin Erstad (back) returned to action for the Astros on Sunday as a pinch-hitter.

He grounded out to first in his lone place appearance. Erstad may be healthy enough to get back into the lineup this week, but he's still not a fantasy option.

Darin Erstad (back) was available for pinch-hitting duties Saturday and could return to the starting lineup Sunday.

Erstad has been sidelined since September 12 with discomfort related to ongoing back spasms. "Better," he said Saturday afternoon when asked about his progress. "It's coming." The impending free agent is batting .208/.281/.347 this season with two homers and 11 RBI in 124 at-bats.

Darin Erstad (back spasms) was held out of the lineup Wednesday for a second consecutive game.

He started feeling the discomfort on Tuesday afternoon during his regular warmup routine. "It's another one of those things," said Erstad, who couldn't say when he expects to return. "It's a day-to-day type thing." He's hitting .208/.281/.347 this season with two homers and 11 RBI in 124 at-bats.

Darin Erstad went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and three RBI in a loss to the Marlins on Monday night.

Erstad, whose duties with the Astros this year have primarily involved pinch-hitting, drew a start at first and made good use of it, smacking his second home run of the season and later adding an RBI double. He's still hitting only .208 and remains a fantasy non-factor.

Astros activated outfielder Darin Erstad from the 15-day disabled list.

Erstad will help out at first base while Lance Berkman recovers from a calf strain. He returns to a .185/.248/.293 batting line through 73 games (44 pinch-hit appearances). Obviously those aren't fantasy-worthy digits.

Darin Erstad (hamstring) went 1-for-4 with a double and a run in his first rehab outing with Double-A Corpus Christi.

Erstad played five innings in left field and reported no pain or discomfort in his left hamstring. He could be activated after one more rehab start.

Darin Erstad (left hamstring strain) is scheduled for two rehab games Tuesday and Wednesday with Double-A Corpus Christi.

Erstad has been on the disabled list since July 19. If he looks strong during those two rehab outings, the Astros will consider activating him.

Darin Erstad, placed on the disabled list retroactive to July 19, has yet to truly test his strained left hamstring.

Erstad has been limited to light jogging. "It's a progression you have to make until the strength gets back," he said. "Just follow the program." The 35-year-old may not be ready to return until late August.

Darin Erstad (hamstring) is not yet ready to begin a running program.

Erstad took batting practice Monday as he continues to make slow progress from a strained left hamstring. "I'm just progressing," he said. "I just follow the program. It takes time. ... I'm not putting a date on it. I just take it day by day." An early-August return is becoming less realistic.

Astros placed outfielder Darin Erstad on the 15-Day disabled list, retroactive to July 19, with a strained left hamstring.

Erstad was limited to pinch-hitting prior to the All-Star break due to the same injury but obviously it had not improved. He left Saturday's game with the injury.

Darin Erstad could be headed for the disabled list with lingering tightness and discomfort in his strained left hamstring.

Erstad was limited to pinch-hitting duties before the All-Star break due to the same injury. It hasn't improved much. "We talked (Saturday) night after the game and asked him to be candid with us," general manager Ed Wade said. "If he thinks it's something that's going to linger, let's shut him down." Erstad may give it another try Monday or Tuesday before a final decision is made.

Darin Erstain is likely to hit the disabled list after leaving Saturday's game with a left hamstring strain.

The Astros will hold off on any evaluation until Monday as they would not have been able to get a replacement into Los Angeles in time for Sunday's game. Erstad said he will not play in Sunday's matinee.
