According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, Elmer Dessens' minor league deal with the Giants has fallen through.
No word on the reason for the break-up. Dessens, 40, posted a 2.30 ERA and 16/16 K/BB ratio across 53 relief appearances with the Mets last season. He'll probably latch on somewhere else by the middle of the spring. Mon, Feb 14, 2011 04:01:00 PM

Giants signed RHP Elmer Dessens to a minor league contract.

He'll compete for a middle relief job during spring training. Dessens would earn $600,000 if he spends the entire season in the majors. The 40-year-old right-hander posted a 2.30 ERA over 53 appearances with the Mets last season, but it masked a pretty awful 16/16 K/BB ratio over 47 innings.

According to Fernando Ballesteros of Puro Beísbol, the Giants have signed right-hander Elmer Dessens to a minor league contract.

The news was passed along by Nick Collias of MLB Trade Rumors. We're still awaiting confirmation from the team, but Ballesteros was told of the signing by Dessens' agent. Dessens, 40, posted a superficially impressive 2.30 ERA over 53 appearances with the Mets last season, but had an awful 16/16 K/BB ratio over 47 innings. He'll struggle to earn a spot on the big club.

Mets officials have informed reliever Elmer Dessens that he will not be brought back for the 2011 season.

The free agent right-hander lowered his asking price this month, hoping that the Mets would be open to inking him to a minor league contract. "They said, 'We're going in another direction,'" Dessens told ESPN New York on Monday. The 40-year-old posted a strong 2.30 ERA across 53 relief appearances last season and should be able to find offers elsewhere.

Mets purchased the contract of RHP Elmer Dessens from Triple-A Buffalo.

He'll provide the Mets an extra bullpen arm for this weekend's interleague matchup against the Yankees. Dessens, 39, had a 2.12 ERA over 13 appearances with Buffalo. He posted a 3.31 ERA in 28 games with the Mets last season.

Elmer Dessens left Tuesday's contest against the Braves after being struck in the right knee by a line drive off the bat of Brian McCann in the third inning.

He was relieved by non-roster invitee Bobby Livingston. Dessens, 39, was signed to a minor league contract in December after posting a 3.31 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 32 1/3 innings last season.

Mets signed RHP Elmer Dessens to a minor league contract.

He can earn $700,000 if he is added to the 40-man roster, with more incentives based on appearances. Dessens, who turns 39 in January, posted a 3.31 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 32 1/3 innings with the Mets in '09, but mostly worked in low-leverage situations. He's organizational depth at the very least, with the potential for more should injuries befall the bullpen once again.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports free agent right-hander Elmer Dessens has talked to the Dodgers and Padres but is likely to re-sign with the Mets.

Dessens, who turns 39 in January, finished the '09 season with a 3.31 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 28 relief appearances. As Crasnick notes, the Mets value him as "minor league insurance and think he can be a positive influence on Oliver Perez, who needs all the help he can get."

FOXSports.com reports that the Mets are close to re-signing RHP Elmer Dessens.

Dessens, 38, posted a 3.31 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 28 relief appearances with the Mets in 2009 after spending the early part of the season at Triple-A Buffalo. Dessens had a lowly 3.80 K/BB ratio in 32 2/3 innings, with a lucky strand rate and unsustainable batting average on balls in play, so you'd have to think they could do better. Still, a spring training invite wouldn't be the worst idea.

Mets purchased the contract of RHP Elmer Dessens from Triple-A Buffalo.

Dessens was designated for assignment last week after allowing 14 baserunners in 12 1/3 innings with the Mets. He cleared waivers and was sent to Buffalo earlier this week, but is needed again after Jon Niese's season ended abruptly due to hamstring tear. The 38-year-old Dessens was 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA in 35 innings for Buffalo.

Mets sent RHP Elmer Dessens outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

Dessens was designated for assignment last week after allowing 14 baserunners in 12 1/3 innings with the Mets. For what it's worth, he was pitching well at Triple-A: 2.31 ERA, 28/19 K/BB ratio. All is not lost.

Mets purchased the contract of RHP Elmer Dessens from Triple-A Buffalo.

Dessens failed to make the Mets' final roster out of spring training, but his 2.31 ERA and 28/9 K/BB ratio in 35 innings this season at Triple-A Buffalo has clearly caught the eye of upper management. The veteran will work in middle relief.

Mets signed RHP Elmer Dessens to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Dessens spent most of last season pitching in Mexico, but he did join the Braves in late August. He went on to pitch just four times and give up 10 runs in four innings. The Mets have better bullpen candidates.
