Dodgers purchased the contract of catcher Einar Diaz from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Diaz will see very little action as a third catcher, though this does free up Toby Hall for pinch-hitting duties on occasion.

Dodgers purchased the contract of catcher Einar Diaz from the Indians and assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Diaz, who was hitting .218 at Triple-A Buffalo, will spend the rest of the month at Las Vegas and then likely join the Dodgers as a third catcher in September.

Indians reassigned catcher Einar Diaz and RHP Steve Karsay to minor league camp.

It seems both have decided to accept the assignments. Karsay has the better chance of helping the Indians this season, though Diaz had a very good spring.

Einar Diaz homered and singled against the Devil Rays in today's victory.

While his competition, Kelly Shoppach, has started out 1-for-11, Diaz is 7-for-16 this spring. As little playing time as Victor Martinez's backup will get, the Indians may prefer to go with the veteran initially.

Indians signed catcher Einar Diaz to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

With John Hart no longer in a GM role, we doubt having Diaz will pay off as well for the Indians as it did the first time. The soon-to-be 33-year-old becomes the club's third catcher, freeing up Josh Bard to be used in trade talks. Still, the Rockies, who were the biggest suitors for Bard, probably lack interest after acquiring Yorvit Torrealba.

Filling in for the injured Yadier Molina, Einar Diaz went 2-for-4 and hit his first home run since last August tonight against the Astros.

Diaz has two homers in two years as a National Leaguer.

Einar Diaz took his first live at-bats of spring in an intrasquad game Thursday.

He went two for three. Diaz will be ready to start the season as Yadier Molina's backup, but may have negative fantasy value.

Einar Diaz made his spring debut today, but didn't get an at-bat against the Nationals.

Diaz was removed for a pinch-hitter after catching a couple of innings. His injured side makes catching easier than hitting.

Einar Diaz and John Mabry both may return for game at-bats today.

Diaz has not swung the bat for nearly a week because of a pain in his side. Mabry has felt elbow discomfort, but was cleared Monday for batting practice.

Einar Diaz continues to work defensively but has been held out of live batting practice for several days because of a mild muscle strain.

Diaz will back up young Yadier Molina this season.

Cardinals signed catcher Einar Diaz, who had been with the Expos, to a one-year, $600,000 contract.

He can earn $225,000 in bonuses. Diaz, who turns 32 in two weeks, will back up Yadier Molina for St. Louis. The former Indian hit just .223/.293/.302 while playing behind Brian Schneider last year. He's nothing more than another Gary Bennett now.

Free agent Einar Diaz will sign with the Cardinals and become Yadier Molina's backup.

Diaz is expected to get a one-year, $600,000 contract.
Tue, Dec 14, 2004 09:35:00 PM

Expos declined their $3.25 million club option on catcher Einar Diaz for 2005.

Diaz, who hit .223/.293/.302 in 139 AB in his one season in Montreal, gets a $400,000 buyout. It's unlikely that any team will look at him as a potential regular, but he probably will land another job as a backup.

Einar Diaz hit his first National League home run tonight against Odalis Perez.

Diaz, who was making his 28th start of the season, is batting .235 with six extra-base hits in 98 at-bats. That certainly doesn't figure to get him a starting gig somewhere next year.
