Pirates announced the retirement of RHP Todd Ritchie.
Still dealing with some soreness in his surgically repaired shoulder, the 33-year-old Ritchie ended his comeback bid. Maybe he'll give it another try next spring. If not, he finishes his career 43-54 with a 4.71 ERA in 120 starts and 64 relief appearances. Mon, Mar 14, 2005 06:34:00 PM

Todd Ritchie gave up three runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings against the Reds.

The Pirates swept the Reds in a pair of split-squad games, despite poor pitching from Ritchie, Bobby Bradley and Brian Meadows in the contest in Bradenton. Ritchie isn't likely to beat out Dave Williams for a rotation spot, and the Pirates have better middle-relief candidates. He may have to head back to Triple-A for a while longer.

Todd Ritchie allowed three runs -- one earned -- and four hits in two innings versus the Reds today.

And that was against a lineup with 2 1/2 regulars (Austin Kearns, Joe Randa and Rich Aurilia). The unearned runs were a result of Ritchie's own two errors. He'll need to do better to stay in contention for a rotation spot.

Pitching coach Spin Williams said that Todd Ritchie, who is attempting to rebound from rotator cuff surgery, does not have the velocity he once had.

Williams was, however, ''pleasantly pleased'' with Ritchie's effort in two innings yesterday, citing the way he was ''still attacking hitters.'' Ritchie is a candidate for the fifth starter job, but not likely to beat out Ryan Vogelsong or Dave Williams.

Todd Ritchie worked a pair of scoreless innings today against the Yankees.

Ritchie is trying to win the open spot in the Pittsburgh rotation after working his way back from rotator-cuff surgery last year. He was throwing 86-89 mph today, as opposed to 91-94 mph back when he was at his best. It's unlikely that he'll ever again be an above average starter, but he might be able to make some kind of contribution as a swingman.

Pirates signed RHP Todd Ritchie to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Ritchie had his last decent season in Pittsburgh in 2001 before the Pirates got the White Sox to give up Kip Wells, Josh Fogg and Sean Lowe for him. He was ineffective while rehabbing following shoulder surgery last season, and it's not a great bet that he'll be any better this year. Still, the Pirates have nothing to lose by bringing him in to compete for the vacancy in their rotation.

Todd Ritchie will get another start Thursday against the Yankees.

He will start the makeup game against New York after pitching 4 1/3 innings and taking a 4-2 loss this past Saturday against Toronto. Stay away from him.

Todd Ritchie gave up four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in his first start of the season for Tampa Bay.

Ritchie's 6.75 ERA after 5 1/3 innings this season is barely higher than his 6.33 ERA at Triple-A Durham. At least he's consistent

Todd Ritchie will start Saturday's game, not John Halama as originally planned.

"We're not playing musical chairs, but we're trying to see if we can catch lightning in a bottle," manager Lou Piniella said.

Devil Rays purchased the contract of RHP Todd Ritchie from Triple-A Durham.

Ritchie has done nothing to earn the callup. He had a 6.29 ERA in 16 starts for Durham after recovering from shoulder surgery.

Todd Ritchie gave up nine runs in four innings yesterday for Triple-A Durham.

Since pitching four scoreless innings in his first appearance for Durham, Ritchie has allowed 20 runs in 12 innings. It doesn't look like he'll be a part of Tampa Bay's rotation any time soon.

Todd Ritchie yesterday pitched four scoreless innings in his first appearance for Triple-A Durham.

Ritchie has a 2.77 ERA in five rehab starts at three levels. The Devil Rays figure to call him up early next month if he continues to succeed.

Making his fourth minor league start, Todd Ritchie tossed six scoreless innings for Double-A Montgomery on Friday.

Ritchie has given up 10 runs -- eight earned -- and 21 hits in 22 innings between Single-A Charleston and Montgomery. The Rays could give him a look if he continues to throw well.

Todd Ritchie allowed two runs -- one earned -- over six innings for Single-A Charleston Thursday in his season debut.

Ritchie underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff last June. He could be a candidate for Tampa Bay's rotation after the All-Star break.
