Antonio Alfonsca was ejected from Thursday's game in the seventh inning for throwing at Todd Helton.

Chase Utley and Jayson Werth had been hit previously in the game. Alfonseca may receive a two- or three-game suspension.

Antonio Alfonseca pitched a shutout 11th inning to earn the save for the Phillies on Tuesday.

After blowing the save, but winning on Sunday, Alfonseca nailed this one fairly easily. Having pitched six straight shutout outings, it looks like he may have some short-term value.

Antonio Alfonseca picked up his first save since 2002 by throwing a scoreless ninth versus the Braves on Saturday.

Alfonseca gave up a leadoff single to Scott Thorman, but he benefited from a nice play on a grounder from Chase Utley to get one out and then Jarrod Saltalamacchia's liner to left was hit at Michael Bourn for out No. 2. A routine fly ended it. Alfonseca entered the game with a 7.36 ERA and a 2.32 WHIP in eight appearances this month, so you'll excuse us if we continue to show little faith in him. Still, he's manager Charlie Manuel's preferred choice to close right now.

While the Phillies intend to use a closer-by-committee with Brett Myers out, manager Charlie Manuel indicated that Antonio Alfonseca might be the favorite for save opportunities.

"Alfonseca has been pitching pretty good for us, and he's done that (job) before," Manuel said. Alfonseca has given up 10 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings over his last 10 appearances, so Manuel clearly isn't going by the dictionary definition of the word good. Pick Alfonseca up at your own risk.

Antonio Alfonseca gave up three runs on Sunday and has allowed five runs in four innings this spring.

The Phillies want Alfonseca to one of their top setup men, but the only thing he really has going for him now is that he once saved 45 games in a season. He'll probably be on the Opening Day roster, but we'd given him a less than 50 percent chance of sticking around through the All-Star break.

Phillies agreed to terms with RHP Antonio Alfonseca on a one-year deal.

Alfonseca, who was out of the league after being cut by the Rangers in June, gave up two runs and six hits in 9 1/3 innings in the Dominican Winter League. The Phillies are hopeful he'll settle in as a setup man, though they should be pleased if he just turns out to be an adequate middle reliever. He's had just one solid year in the last four.

According to his agent, Antonio Alfonseca has agreed to terms with the Phillies on a one-year deal.

Alfonseca was out of the league for the final 3 1/2 months of last year after being let go by the Rangers. He'd be a strong candidate to win a spot in Philadelphia's bullpen.

Rangers placed RHP Antonio Alfonseca on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

The Rangers attempted to trade Alfonseca after designating him for assignment 10 days ago, but there weren't any takers. He might have to go to Triple-A for a little while.

Rangers designated RHP Antonio Alfonseca for assignment.

Alfonseca had made just two appearances since coming off the DL, giving up two runs in an inning. Perhaps he'll be an adequate 12th pitcher if he gets back to the NL. As much success as he there two years ago, perhaps Atlanta will want him.

Rangers activated RHP Antonio Alfonseca from the 15-day disabled list.

Alfonseca will work in middle relief in front of Akinori Otsuka and Francisco Cordero. No fantasy value.

Antonio Alfonseca (elbow) is expected to return from the disabled list Tuesday.

Alfonseca pitched poorly at Triple-A Sunday, but the Rangers will likely make room for him on the roster by designating D'Angelo Jimenez for assignment.

Antonio Alfonseca (elbow) pitched one inning at Triple-A Sunday, giving up two runs.

The Rangers reportedly haven't decided if they'll activate him for Tuesday's game or keep Alfonseca in the minors for a while longer.

Antonio Alfonseca (elbow) will make a appearance for Triple-A Oklahoma on Sunday.

Alfonseca is expected to be activated from the disabled list following this outing. D'Angelo Jimenez could be waived when Alfonseca is activated.

Antonio Alfonseca (elbow) pitched a scoreless inning Wednesday in a rehab appearance for Triple-A Oklahoma.

Alfonseca wasn't expected to require a DL stint in the first place, but it's now been a week since he was eligible to be activated and he still hasn't returned to the active roster. As well as Rick Bauer and Ron Mahay are pitching, the Rangers just don't appear to have much use for Alfonseca. Still, there's a good chance he'll take Scott Feldman's spot sometime in the near future.
