Padres hired Mark Kotsay as hitting coach.
This will be his first professional coaching job. Kotsay retired after the 2013 season and spent this past season in the Padres’ front office as a special assistant to the general manager. He's replacing Phil Plantier, who was fired as hitting coach in October after three seasons on the job. Mon, Dec 1, 2014 05:13:00 PM

Mark Kotsay declared for free agency.

This is notable because Kotsay announced his retirement in September. The 37-year-old has batted .276 with 127 home runs and 720 RBI during his 17-year career, netting $50.75 million total. It's unclear at this time if he has changed his mind.

Mark Kotsay will retire at the end of the season.

"I know this is a good time physically and mentally for me to retire... these are my last games as a player," the 37-year-old said. Kotsay has batted .276 with 127 home runs and 720 RBI during his 17-year career. According to Baseball Reference, the outfielder will have made $50.75 million across his 17 seasons.

Mark Kotsay went 0-for-4 as the Padres' designated hitter Thursday against the Red Sox.

Having Kotsay around is like employing a player-coach. Unfortunately, it's also like playing with a 24-man roster. The 37-year-old is hitting .198 with one homer and seven RBI in 91 at-bats. He's even 0-for-2 stealing bases. Still, the Padres kept him over Kyle Blanks last month before Yonder Alonso got hurt and canceled out move to option Blanks to Triple-A. He's probably not going to get many more starts after Yonder Alonso and Jedd Gyorko come back.

Mark Kotsay is dealing with a strained hamstring.

The Padres consider it to be a mild strain and are hoping Kotsay will be OK after a few days of treatment. The veteran pinch-hitter has six hits in his first 13 at-bats this season.

Padres signed OF Mark Kotsay to a one-year, $1.3 million extension through 2013.

He gets a slight bump from the $1.25 million he's making this season. Kotsay, 36, has batted a pedestrian .275/.333/.363 this season for San Diego, but the Padres value his bat off the bench and clubhouse presence.

Corey Brock of reports that the Padres will announce later Sunday that they have signed Mark Kotsay to an extension through 2013.

Kotsay has put up an unexciting .275/.333/.363 batting line while making two trips to the disabled list this season, but Brock says that Padres like his bat off the bench, as well as his clubhouse presence. The 36-year-old is making $1.25 million in 2012 and will likely play for a similar salary in 2013.

Padres activated OF Mark Kotsay from the 15-day disabled list.

Kotsay was batting .294/.351/.441 with a homer over 34 at-bats before a back injury landed him on the DL last month. He'll resume his bench role, though he's in the starting lineup Sunday.

Mark Kotsay (back) received a cortisone injection Monday.

Kotsay had to exit last Saturday's game with tightness in his lower back. Barring a setback, he should be back when eligible.

Padres placed outfielder Mark Kotsay on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 13, with a tight lower back.

Kotsay had to exit last Saturday's game with tightness in his lower back. San Diego kept expecting him to make it back, and avoid a DL stint, but with Kotsay's injury history that was probably wishful thinking. Kotsay is eligible to return a week from Sunday.

Mark Kotsay reported improvement with his lower back Sunday.

Kotsay had to exit Saturday's game with tightness in his lower back, but although he won't play Sunday, it appears he'll avoid a DL stint. "He said last night that tomorrow [Sunday] will be big," Padres manager Bud Black said. "When I saw him (Sunday), he said that it felt good. We're going to do the best we can to stay away from him (Sunday)."

Mark Kotsay was removed from Saturday's game in the second inning with an apparent lower back injury.

James Darnell took Kotsay's place in left field after the injury. There has been no word yet on the extent of the injury or whether or not the veteran outfielder will need time on the disabled list. He can continue to be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Pinch-hitter Mark Kotsay hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday to lead the Padres to a 2-0 win over the Brewers.

Kotsay has four RBI this season, but they've been huge, giving the Padres their only runs in 2-1 and 2-0 victories. The pinch-hit homer was his first since Aug. 9, 2002 in his first go-round with the Padres.

Mark Kotsay delivered a pinch-hit go-ahead two-run double in a 2-1 win over the Nationals on Thursday.

Kotsay entered Thursday's action with zero RBI in 15 plate appearances this season, but he ripped one into the right-center field gap against Tyler Clippard in the bottom of the eighth to finally get on the board and put the Padres ahead. The 37-year-old was a surprisingly useful bench player for the Brewers last year, but he's unlikely to accrue enough playing time have any fantasy value this season.
