Kevin Millwood has announced his retirement from baseball.
Millwood, 38, wanted to catch on with the Braves or Rays, teams that are close to his Gainesville, Georgia home, but after that didn't happen he's decided to hang it up. "I feel like I can still throw it well and going out on a high note is a big deal," Millwood said. "I just felt it was time to be closer to home and to be around the kids more often." Millwood retires with 169 wins, a 4.11 ERA, one All-Star game appearance and one ERA title after 16 seasons. Sun, Feb 3, 2013 09:09:00 AM

Kevin Millwood said Friday that he is considering retirement.

Millwood had a 4.25 ERA and 107/56 K/BB ratio in 161 innings over 28 starts this season prior to going down with a sore shoulder earlier this month. The 37-year-old right-hander just isn't sure if he wants to put his body through another season. "I knew I wanted to play this year," said Millwood. "But like I said, now I'm just trying to figure out physically if I can do it. I still definitely believe I can get people out, but whether it's time to stay home and spend more time with my kids or try it again, I don't know the answer to that yet." Millwood has 169 wins and a 4.11 ERA over 16 major league seasons.

Kevin Millwood felt some shoulder stiffness Wednesday.

It's why the veteran left-hander made an early exit from his start against the Blue Jays. The Mariners will reevaluate Millwood in a couple of days before deciding whether he's a go for his next scheduled outing.

Kevin Millwood limited the Blue Jays to two runs on just two hits and a walk over five innings in Wednesday's 3-2 win.

He struck out three, with an Edwin Encarnacion two-run blast representing the only tallies. Millwood has struggled overall in the second half but has pitched better of late with a 3.78 ERA over his last six starts. He'll get the Orioles next.

Kevin Millwood held the Red Sox to one run on four hits in six innings of Wednesday's 2-1 win.

Millwood struck out three and walked three as he improved to 5-12. The quality start was his first in three outings. The 37-year-old righty will bring a 4.27 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 104/55 K/BB ratio into his start against the Blue Jays in Toronto next week.

Kevin Millwood allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of Sunday's rain-shortened loss to the White Sox.

The game was called after seven innings. Millwood struck out three and walked one in falling to 4-11. Thanks to the unearned runs, he gets credit for his third straight quality start. Through 145 innings, Millwood is now the owner of a 4.16 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 100/48 K/BB ratio. He'll get the Angels at home on Friday.

Kevin Millwood threw seven scoreless innings of two-run ball in a no-decision victory against the Rays on Tuesday.

He gave up more hits. More impressively, Millwood struck out eight and walked just one. Millwood entered August with a 3.90 ERA but came into tonight with a 4.38 mark after getting scorched in consecutive outings. He looks to be back on track and currently sports a 4.28 ERA.

Millwood struck out three and issued one free pass in falling to 4-10. The non-quality outing was his second straight. After entering August with a 3.90 ERA, he's now sporting a 4.38 mark. Millwood will look to get back on track against the Rays at home on Tuesday.

Kevin Millwood struggled in Friday’s loss to the Yankees, surrendering four runs on nine hits over his six frames.

Millwood walked one and punched out three on the evening. Curtis Granderson got the scoring started with a two-run single in the third, and Eric Chavez capped off the damage with a two-run blast in the sixth inning. Though he sits at 4-9, Millwood has actually pitched fairly well this season, posting a 4.01 ERA and 86/42 K/BB ratio over 121 1/3 innings. He’ll attempt to get back in the win column when he squares off against the Orioles in Baltimore on Wednesday.

Kevin Millwood held the Royals to one (unearned) run in Saturday afternoon's 4-3 victory.

Millwood scattered six hits and walked just one while fanning three Kansas City hitters. The veteran right-hander struggled mightily last week against this same Royals team but made the necessary adjustments on Saturday in Seattle. He'll take a 3.90 ERA and 1.36 WHIP into his next start.

Kevin Millwood was hammered in a no-decision against the Royals on Wednesday evening, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits in his five innings of work.

He walked one and struck out two. The Royals pushed three runs across in the second inning to get on the board, and then kept chipping away at Millwood until the damage piled up. Lorenzo Cain's two-run homer in the fifth inning capped it all off. Millwood will take a 3-7 record and 4.15 ERA into his next start against the hot-hitting Yankees. He remains an extremely weak fantasy option in all but the deepest of AL-only leagues.

Back from a strained groin, Kevin Millwood shut out the A's for seven innings in a no-decision on Friday.

Millwood left with a 1-0 lead, but that was blown in the eighth. He's gone seven straight starts without a victory, but his ERA is slightly lower now (3.69) than it was after his last win on May 23 (3.72).

Kevin Millwood (groin) will have his next start pushed back until next weekend.

Millwood was originally scheduled to start Monday against the Orioles, but Hisashi Iwakuma will fill in. At this point, it doesn't appear that Millwood will need a trip to the DL. Steve Delabar, who was recalled on Friday will serve as the long man in the bullpen, the role previously held by Iwakuma.

Kevin Millwood (groin) will do some pregame throwing on Friday, to test his injured groin before Monday's start.

If all checks out, Millwood will take his regular turn in the rotation against the Orioles on Monday. If not, he could be pushed back until later in the week. Either way, he's not a tremendous fantasy option.

Kevin Millwood (groin) expects to make his next start.

Millwood exited his outing Wednesday after aggravating his groin injury, but he threw Thursday and felt fine. "I’m thinking it might just have been scar tissue tearing lose or something," Millwood said. "I went out (Thursday) and threw, and I could use my legs again. I didn’t feel anything. That’s positive – but a little confusing, too." Millwood will be checked out by the Mariners' doctors, but manager Eric Wedge also sounded optimistic the veteran righty would be able to take the ball his next time out.
