An MRI on Eli Marrero's sore right shoulder revealed only tendinitis and a strained ligament, allowing the right-hander to avoid surgery.
"No throwing for about four or five days," said Marrero, who has been assigned to Triple-A Memphis. "No hitting. And we'll take it from there." Wed, Mar 28, 2007 10:09:00 PM

Cardinals reassigned C Eli Marrero, 1B Tagg Bozied, INF Edgar Gonzalez, C Brian Esposito to minor league camp

Marrero was 7-for-24 with a 1/5 K/BB ratio, but he became a big long shot for a bench spot after Preston Wilson was re-signed. Gonzalez, the older brother of San Diego's first baseman, made a case for a job by hitting .348 with three homers in 23 at-bats. He could be the first infielder called up by the team.

Eli Marrero was scheduled to catch the entire game on Friday but was a late scratch because of a sore right elbow.

Marrero caught two nine-inning games the prior three days. He said he planned to be available to play Saturday.

Cardinals signed infielder-outfielder Eli Marrero to a minor league contract.

Marrero, who spent the first seven years of his career with the Cardinals, hit .204/.324/.441 in 93 at-bats with the Rockies and Mets last season. There only figures to be room for him on the Cardinals' roster if the team fails to add another outfielder. As is, he'd make sense with left-handed hitters Chris Duncan and Jim Edmonds due to start. If the Cardinals replace Duncan, then it's hard to see where Marrero would fit.

Mets designated outfielder Eli Marrero for assignment.

Marrero went 6-for-33 in two months with the Mets. The move clears a roster spot for Ricky Ledee, who was claimed off waivers last night. If Marrero opts to accept an assignment to Triple-A, the Mets could bring him back in September.

Eli Marrero isn't playing tonight against the Marlins because of a stiff neck.

Marrero, who was scheduled to play left field, was replaced by Chris Woodward.

Mets acquired outfielder-first baseman Eli Marrero from the Rockies for infielder Kaz Matsui and cash.

Marrero was actually just 1-for-14 against left-handed pitchers for the Rockies this season, but he'll be a nice piece off the bench for the Mets. He can spot Cliff Floyd against certain left-handers and serve as an emergency catcher. It's not a trade that's going to make much difference, but the Mets are probably better off with Marrero on their bench than they were with Matsui.

After entering as a pinch-hitter, Eli Marrero appeared in his fifth game at catcher on Tuesday night.

This will make him eligible at the position in a few more leagues. Marrero has started just one game behind the plate.

Eli Marrero, unavailable Wednesday due to the flu, walked as a pinch-hitter on Friday night.

Eli Marrero is making his first start at catcher in three years Sunday against the Astros.

It's his third appearance at the position this season. Marrero was expected to see more time at catcher this season, but with Ryan Shealy, Jorge Piedra and later Todd Helton spending time on the DL, the Rockies have been able to get him more at-bats than anticipated at other positions.

Eli Marrero could start a game at catcher this week.

Marrero caught an inning on April 5, it was his first time behind the plate since May 10, 2003. He has been hitting the ball very well this season and the Rockies are trying to do anything to get his bat in the lineup.

Eli Marrero, expected last night to go on the disabled list, is playing first base against the Reds on Wednesday.

Marrero had been sidelined by strained rib-cage muscle for a week. He only needs to gut it out at first base for two days until Todd Helton gets back, putting Marrero back into a pinch-hitting role.

Eli Marrero is expected to be placed on the disabled list because of his strained rib cage.

No word yet on who will replace him, but Jeff Baker would have to be a candidate. It might not matter, as the Rockies will probably have Todd Helton back on Friday.

Eli Marrero's rib cage muscle strain has improved and he will attempt to take batting practice prior to Friday's game.

Marrero is unlikely to start unless he feels fantastic during the BP session. Jason Smith will continue to start for him.
