Free agent Sean Casey announced his retirement Tuesday after 12 seasons.
Casey certainly had a disappointing career after hitting .332/.399/.539 as a 24-year-old in 1999 and .315/.385/.517 the following season. He'd have just two 800 OPS seasons left in his career, and he never had a 100-RBI campaign. Still, while his power evaporated, he didn't lose his ability to hit singles. In fact, he's retiring after a year in which he hit .322/.381/.393 in 199 at-bats. He finishes up at .302/.362/.447 with 130 homers in 5,066 at-bats. Tue, Jan 27, 2009 02:10:00 PM

Sean Casey has decided to retire and take a spot on the MLB network, WEEI reports.

Quite a surprise. Casey ceased being a quality regular years ago, but he probably could have spent at least the next five years serving as a pinch-hitter. He hit .322/.381/.393 in 199 at-bats for the Red Sox last season.

No corresponding move was announced tonight, but the open roster spot will go Saturday's scheduled start, David Pauley. It looks like Mark Kotsay will be the backup first baseman for now.

Sean Casey will have his ailing neck examined by team doctors in Boston on Friday.

Casey says that his neck is slowly starting to feel better, but he doesn't know why it's taking so long. He's been out since August 19 due to the pain, but says he doesn't think he'll need a DL stint.

But he's like the nicest guy in the league. Casey will probably wait to serve his suspension until Manny Ramirez is healthier.
