Free agent outfielder Geoff Jenkins acknowledged Saturday that he's likely going to retire soon.

Jenkins drew little interest this offseason after managing no at-bats in 2009 and hitting just .246/.301/.392 in 2008. "There were some calls (in the spring) but they were to go to Triple-A," said the 35-year-old. "That just wasn't in my heart." He has yet to officially file retirement papers.
Sat, May 8, 2010 07:53:00 PM's Jerry Crasnick has learned that outfielder Geoff Jenkins wants to play in 2010 and has been working out for several months.

Jenkins was released by the Phillies prior to the start of the 2009 season and was unable to land a deal with any MLB club. He hit .246/.301/.392 with nine homers in 2008 and is now 35 years of age.

Phillies released outfielder Geoff Jenkins.

Signed to a two-year, $13 million contract last offseason, Jenkins lost his starting job to Jayson Werth and is now completely out of the Phillies' plans after hitting just .246/.301/.392 last season. He still has some value as a platoon player or bench bat, but at 34 years old Jenkins is likely done as a regular and the Phillies have the similarly skilled Matt Stairs around to take his at-bats.

Phillies activated outfielder Geoff Jenkins from the the 15-day disabled list.

If his hip is feeling OK, Jenkins figures to get more start at Pat Burrell's expense than Jayson Werth's. Right now, he'll probably be mostly utilized as a pinch-hitter.

Assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Sunday that Geoff Jenkins (hip) could be limited to pinch-hitting duties once he comes off the disabled list.

Jenkins is scheduled to take batting practice Monday. "He's coming along pretty good," Amaro said. "He's taking some hacks and we'll see how he feels over this next week."

Phillies placed outfielder Geoff Jenkins on 15-disabled list with a right hip flexor strain.

He suffered the injury Friday night and the door is now open for Jayson Werth to become the Phillies' everyday right fielder after splitting time with Jenkins for much of the season. Jenkins has hit just .246/.304/.394 with nine homers and 29 RBI in 108 games, while Werth is batting .267/.358/.490 with 17 homers and 47 RBI in 100 games.

Geoff Jenkins injured his shoulder Sunday when he was hit by the barrel of his broken bat.

Jenkins’ bat broke on contact, and he was struck in the right side near his neck. He's likely day-to-day. Jayson Werth could start if Jenkins is still hurting on Tuesday.

Geoff Jenkins finished 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI Friday as the Phillies beat the Marlins.

Ryan Howard homered in the second inning, his 29th, then Jenkins followed with a run-scoring single. Chase Utley picked up an RBI with a single in the third, then Jenkins homered in the fourth. The Marlins tried to rally in the bottom of the frame, but came up a couple runs short. Jenkins is hitting .243 with eight homers and 26 RBI this season.

Geoff Jenkins went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Tuesday's loss to the White Sox.

With a .143 average in 56 at-bats, Jenkins has hit a new low next month. The Phillies could justify playing Jayson Werth over him regularly, but the two have practically identical lines against right-handers this season. If the Phillies truly want to upgrade, they'll have to go outside of the organization. Unfortunately, the two-year deal they gave Jenkins makes a move unlikely.

Geoff Jenkins went 1-for-3 with a a two-run homer as the Phillies completed a sweep of the Rockies on Wednesday night.

He also walked in a run, finishing with three RBI. With Jayson Werth out, he'll be playing plenty of right field, making him worth consideration in mixed leagues. The homer was his second in the past four games, and he has six RBI over that stretch. Chase Utley also homered again, putting him on pace for 50 this season. He's hit three in the last four games, and could be going on another streak.

Geoff Jenkins homered and scored three times as the Phillies routed the Astros 15-6.

Jenkins hit a two-run shot off starter Chris Sampson and also singled twice. Pat Burrell and Chase Utley also added homers while Shane Victorino drove in three runs. Jenkins has been an early season disappointment for the Phillies, but they have no choice but to stick with him while Jayson Werth is out.

Geoff Jenkins went hitless against Brian Moehler in Saturday's loss to the Astros.

Jenkins is hitting .271, but it's about as empty as a .271 as you're going to see from a guy at a premium offensive position. Just how much longer can the Phillies live with a right fielder on pace for a 30-RBI season? Probably a lot longer than they would have if lame-duck GM Pat Gillick didn't give him a two-year deal.
