Daryle Ward was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for amphetamines.
The 36-year-old might simply decide to hang up his cleats. Ward was released by the Diamondbacks in September of last season after failing to get past Double-A and hasn't appeared in a big league game since 2008. Wed, Jan 25, 2012 05:14:00 PM

Nationals acquired first baseman Daryle Ward and outfielder Norris Hopper from the White Sox for cash.

Ward and Hopper, former major leaguers, were playing for Triple-A Charlotte. Both will report to Triple-A Syracuse. The Nationals just needed warm bodies at Syracuse. Ward has played 11 seasons in the majors with six different teams. He hit .308 with six homers and 19 RBI in 78 games with the Nationals in 2006 before being traded to the Braves.

White Sox signed first baseman-outfielder Daryle Ward to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Charlotte.

Ward hit .250/.300/.393 in 28 at-bats this spring before the Reds sent him packing. He played for the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League during the month of April.

Reds released first baseman-outfielder Daryle Ward.

It looks like the Reds wanted someone with versatility occupying the last spot on their bench. Ward hit .250/.300/.393 in 28 at-bats. There's little reason to think he's done just because he had a subpar 2008, but at this point, he seems unlikely to open 2009 in the majors.

Reds signed first baseman-outfielder Daryle Ward to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Ward was a great bench player in 2006 and 2007, but he slipped to .216/.319/.402 in 102 at-bats last season. The Reds would seem to have 10 position player spots accounted for between Ramon Hernandez, Ryan Hanigan, Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Edwin Encarnacion, Alex Gonzalez, Jeff Keppinger, Jerry Hairston Jr., Willy Taveras and Jay Bruce. That would leave three jobs open for Chris Dickerson, Jonny Gomes, Ward, Jacque Jones, Norris Hopper, Wilkin Castillo and Laynce Nix. Ward would seem to have a pretty good chance of securing a spot as a pinch-hitter unless Gonzalez's status forces the team to carry an extra infielder.

Daryle Ward hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the top of ninth Friday to lift the Cubs over the Marlins 6-5.

It was the Cubs' ninth straight road victory. Carlos Zambrano had an RBI single in the second inning and Mark DeRosa homered in the fourth, but the Cubs were down 5-3 heading into the ninth. Marlins' closer Kevin Gregg walked DeRosa then allowed a Reed Johnson single before Ward hit, in place of reliever Chad Gaudin, a three-run heroic shot. He is batting .229 this season with 3 homers and 13 RBI in 70 at-bats.

Daryle Ward could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Tuesday, according to Cubs' GM Jim Hendry.

Ward joined Triple-A Iowa on Saturday for a short rehab assignment. The Cubs would probably like to use him as the DH when they visit the White Sox next weekend.

Daryle Ward (back) won't be ready to return from the disabled list when the Cubs begin interleague play in AL parks this weekend.

Instead, the team is expected to call up Micah Hoffpauir from Triple-A to give them an extra bat, with manager Lou Piniella saying Tuesday that he plans to rotate Aramis Ramirez, Derrek Lee, Alfonso Soriano and Mark DeRosa at designated hitter.

Daryle Ward (back) says he's probably two days away from taking on-field batting practice.

Ward's a pinch-hitter, so once he starts taking batting practice he should be able to return to the roster fairly quickly. "I'll be able to hit, regardless -- I was born to hit," said Ward, a career .265 hitter.

Cubs placed first baseman Daryle Ward on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 14, with a bulging disc in his lower back.

Ward was 2-for-17 with seven walks as a pinch-hitter this season and 5-for-25 with a homer overall. Since he's not an everyday player and doesn't necessarily need to be 100 percent to do a few minutes of work each night, he could be back as soon as his 15 minutes are up.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Daryle Ward (back) will be placed on the disabled list "sometime this weekend."

The Cubs are expected to call up first baseman-outfielder Micah Hoffpauir from Triple-A to take Ward's spot on the roster.

The Chicago Sun Times reports that Daryle Ward will be placed on the disabled list with a back injury.

According to the newspaper, an MRI exam Wednesday revealed a herniated disk, but the Cubs are hoping that he can return after the minimum 15 days.
