Royals released LHP Bruce Chen.
This could be the end of the line for the 37-year-old southpaw who posted a horrifying 7.45 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 36/16 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings on the season. Sep 6 - 12:23 AM

Royals designated LHP Bruce Chen for assignment.

Chen gets the boot after being pummeled for six runs in an extra-innings loss to the Twins on Thursday. The left-hander had been used sparingly since returning from the DL, so the move isn't terribly surprising. He'll pass through waivers easily given his $3.25 million salary.
Aug 29 - 5:41 PM

Bruce Chen allowed six runs on eight hits over five innings in Sunday's loss to the Indians.

Chen took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning but proceeded to allow six runs over the next two-plus innings of work. Jason Vargas continues to inch closer to being activated, meaning Chen's days in the rotation are limited. He owns a 6.42 ERA and 1.67 WHIP on the year.
Jul 27 - 7:14 PM

Bruce Chen held the White Sox to one run over five innings in a win Tuesday.

Chen's only mistake was a home run by Adam Dunn, but the left-hander limited the Sox to four hits and no runs over the rest of his time on the mound. It was his first win since April 19 and just his second win overall. Chen has filled in admirably in Jason Vargas' absence, but with Vargas nearing a return Chen will soon fade back into fantasy irrelevance.
Jul 23 - 12:11 AM

Bruce Chen allowed two runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision against the Tigers on Sunday.

Chen, who's filling in for Jason Vargas as he recovers from an appendectomy, struck out two without walking a batter on the day. He owns a 6.46 ERA and 1.66 WHIP through 30 2/3 innings as a spot starter and long reliever.
Jul 13 - 6:01 PM

Royals activated LHP Bruce Chen from the 60-day disabled list.

Chen has been out since late April because of a back injury and did not pitch well on his minor league rehab assignment. The left-hander will work in a long relief role.
Jun 24 - 4:27 PM

Royals transferred LHP Bruce Chen from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Justin Maxwell. Chen is due back soon from a back injury.
Jun 22 - 8:54 AM

Bruce Chen (back) is expected to need two more rehab starts before being activated from the disabled list.

Chen allowed two runs on eight hits over three innings in his first rehab outing with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Tuesday. He's being stretched out as a starter, but there's no guarantee he'll return as a member of the rotation.
Jun 4 - 10:17 AM

Bruce Chen (back) will make a minor league rehab start Tuesday will Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Chen, out since late April with a bulging disk in his lower back, is scheduled to throw 45 pitches. He figures to return in the next couple of weeks, but he might do so in the bullpen.
Jun 2 - 5:57 PM

Bruce Chen (back) will be cleared for a rehab assignment if he gets through a bullpen session Sunday with no issues.

Chen has already thrown a simulated game and live batting practice this week. It's not clear how many rehab starts he'll need, but he's close to returning. However, it could be as a reliever.
May 30 - 4:26 PM

Bruce Chen (back) threw live batting practice on Friday.

It comes after he had a successful simulated game on Monday. Chen is nearing a rehab assignment and should be ready to rejoin the Royals in early June. As long as Yordano Ventura (elbow) can avoid the DL as the Royals expect, Chen might return as a reliever.
May 30 - 2:14 PM

Bruce Chen (back) felt "really good" during a 25-pitch simulated game Monday.

"It felt good," Chen said. "Really good. The last three days, it really got better, significantly better." The Royals haven't decided when Chen might begin a rehab assignment, but it should be soon. With Danny Duffy pitching well, Chen might return as a reliever.
May 26 - 9:03 PM

Bruce Chen (back) isn't close to beginning a rehab assignment.

Chen, who is nursing a bulging disk in lower back, threw a more intense bullpen session Saturday, but he's still got a ways to go. "I don’t imagine it’s going to be in the next four, five, six, seven days" that he takes a mound in a minor-league game, Royals manager Ned Yost said. With Danny Duffy pitching well, Chen might not have a rotation spot waiting for him once he's ready.
May 18 - 9:39 AM

Bruce Chen (back) hopes to throw a light bullpen session Wednesday.

Nursing a bulging disk in lower back, Chen has been limited to playing catch to this point. There's no timetable for the veteran left-hander's return to the Royals' rotation, but he does appear to finally be making some progress.
May 14 - 10:39 AM

Royals general manager Dayton Moore said Tuesday that the club is "unsure" about Bruce Chen's (back) timeline at this point.

The Royals had been hoping he was ready on May 17, when they next need a fifth starter after Thursday, but that appears to be up in the air. "We’re still unsure about Bruce’s timeline at this point," Moore said. "He’s not throwing a baseball competitively right now. And every day a pitcher doesn’t, it gets to a point in time where you’ve got to build him back up. And those things take time."
