Bruce Chen hasn't allowed an earned run and holds an 11/1 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 relief innings this season.
Meanwhile, Luis Mendoza has a 7.00 ERA and 1.50 WHIP and Wade Davis has a 5.55 ERA and 1.97 WHIP. The Royals could look to change things up at the back-end of the rotation if Mendoza and Davis don't pick it up, as both Chen and Luke Hochevar have pitched very well in relief. May 3 - 12:00 PM

Bruce Chen will start the season pitching out of the bullpen.

Chen lost out to Luis Mendoza for the final spot in the starting rotation. The veteran left-hander had minimal fantasy value as a starter and he'll be rendered irrelevant out of the bullpen. The Royals are paying him $4.5 million this season.

Bruce Chen was hammered for seven runs -- six earned -- in five innings Saturday against the Cubs.

Chen yielded nine hits -- five of which were homers -- and also issued a walk. He now has a 7.90 ERA in the Cactus League and seems to be falling behind in the race for the final spot in the Kansas City starting rotation.
Mar 16 - 7:13 PM

Bruce Chen, Will Smith, Luis Mendoza and Yordano Ventura will be considered for the fifth spot in the Royals' starting rotation.

Luke Hochevar was eliminated from the field Wednesday when Royals manager Ned Yost announced that he was being moved to the bullpen. Chen is the likely favorite in part because he's due to make $4.5 million this year, but the veteran left-hander is an uninspiring option in fantasy leagues.
Mar 13 - 12:07 PM

Bruce Chen allowed one earned run over three innings Tuesday in the Royals' 8-2 defeat of the A's.

Chen issued no walks and struck out two. He has agreed to remain in Royals camp all spring rather than pitch for Panama or China in the 2013 WBC and will hope to claim the final spot in the Kansas City rotation. Chen registered a 5.07 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 140/47 K/BB ratio across 191 2/3 innings last season.
Mar 5 - 5:49 PM

Bruce Chen will not pitch for China in the World Baseball Classic.

Chen pitched for Panama during the 2009 WBC, but he wanted to pitch for China this time around because he's of Chinese descent. However, it was just taking too long for him to be certified to pitch for China, so he has decided not to participate.
Feb 12 - 12:36 PM

Bruce Chen will pitch for China in the World Baseball Classic.

Chen is of Chinese descent but was born in Panama and played for them during the 2009 WBC, pitching well enough to earn a deal with the Royals. The left-hander will compete for Kansas City's No. 5 starter job in 2013.
Jan 13 - 2:39 PM

Bruce Chen surrendered six runs -- two earned -- on 10 hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings in Monday's loss to the Tigers.

A David Lough error allowed Chen to lower his ERA to an ugly 5.07, but he obviously wasn't sharp in this one. He finishes the year having served up 33 home runs, which is currently good for the fourth-highest total in the league. Chen will make $4.5 million in his final year with the Royals next year.

Bruce Chen pitched decently in Tuesday’s loss to the Tigers, allowing just two runs on over 6 2/3 innings.

He walked three while striking out five. After tallying two runs in the first, it looked like the Tigers had Chen on the ropes in the second inning. They loaded the bases with no outs and had the heart of the order coming up, but Chen induced a weak fly ball from Omar Infante then impressively punched out Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. He’ll head into his season finale against these same Tigers at home on Monday with an 11-13 record and 5.13 ERA

Bruce Chen held the White Sox to five hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings of Wednesday's 3-0 victory.

Chen struck out four and walked three in improving to 11-12. The scoreless outing was just Chen's fourth of the year, and comes after he allowed at least five runs in three consecutive starts coming into this evening. Under contract for $4.5 million in 2013, Chen is the owner of a 5.22 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 132/43 K/BB ratio through 179 1/3 innings this season.

Bruce Chen was once again hammered in a no-decision against the Angels on Friday, surrendering five runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.

He racked up five strikeouts while walking one on the night. Howie Kendrick smashed a two-run double to get the Angels on the board in the fourth, which was quickly followed by a two-run single from Alberto Callaspo. Chen now owns a middling 10-12 record on the season to compliment an abysmal 5.42 ERA. He’ll look for better results when he does battle against the White Sox at home on Thursday.

Bruce Chen turned in another awful performance in Saturday's loss to the White Sox, allowing five runs on six hits over his six innings of work.

Chen walked two and struck out six. Most of the damage stemmed from his inability to keep the ball in the yard, as Dayan Viciedo, Tyler Flowers and Paul Konerko each blasted homers in the game. With the poor outing, Chen falls to 10-12 on the season with an abysmal 5.36 ERA. He'll attempt to get back in the win column when he takes on the Angels at home on Friday.

Bruce Chen baffled the Tigers in Wednesday's 1-0 victory, allowing just five baserunners in eight scoreless frames.

Chen struck out four, walked one and allowed four hits in improving to 10-10 on the season. The eight-inning start was his first of the year, while the scoreless outing was only his third. In the first year of a two-year deal, Chen is the owner of a 5.13 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 112/36 K/BB ratio through 154 1/3 frames. He'll get the Rangers at home on Monday. Keep him benched for that one.

Bruce Chen turned in a rare quality start in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Friday, surrendering three runs on eight hits over his six-plus innings.

Chen struck out five while walking only one in the game. After allowing a two-run single to David Ortiz in the first inning, he held the Red Sox at bay until the seventh inning. He walked the only hitter he faced in the frame before handing the ball over to the bullpen, who allowed the inherited runner to score. Chen has pretty much been a train-wreck this season, compiling a 9-10 record, 5.41 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. He'll look to carry over this strong performance when he takes on the Tigers at home on Wednesday.

Bruce Chen allowed four runs on four hits, three walks and two home runs in 5 1/3 innings of Sunday's loss to the Orioles.

Chen served up bombs to Nick Markakis and rookie Manny Machado in falling to 8-10. He's now been quality in only two of his seven starts since the All-Star break. Chen will bring a 5.56 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 95/32 K/BB ratio into his Saturday start against the White Sox at home.
