Bruce Chen has announced his retirement from baseball.
Chen announced the news via his Twitter account on Monday. He wrote: "Today, I would like to announce my retirement. For the last 22yrs I have been doing what I love for a living. I feel blessed and fortunate." Slated to turn 38 next month, the left-hander posted a 4.62 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over parts of 17 major league seasons. May 18 - 8:16 PM

Bruce Chen is considering retirement after being designated for assignment by the Indians on Saturday.

Chen, who will turn 38 next month, was rocked for nine runs over just 6 1/3 innings in his two starts with the Tribe. He'll clear waivers but could decide to just stay home rather than report to Triple-A Columbus. "You know when you talk to a guy at this point of his career, potentially he might decide to go home," said manager Terry Francona. "You want to really be respectful. He's such a good guy. I think he wants to take some time to talk to his family."
May 17 - 9:16 AM

Indians designated LHP Bruce Chen for assignment.

Chen lasted 2 1/3 innings Friday against Texas, getting the hook from Terry Francona after only 35 pitches. The 37-year-old has averaged just 84.5 mph on his fastball this season and opponents have hit .500 against him in 35 plate appearances. Zach McAllister may be asked to fill Chen's spot in the starting rotation.
May 16 - 4:21 PM

Bruce Chen was chased after giving up three runs in 2 1/3 innings Friday against the Rangers.

Chen gave up all three runs in the first inning on home runs by Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre. He allowed seven hits in all and it was obvious he wasn't fooling anyone, so Terry Francona brought the hook after just 35 pitches. His time in Cleveland's rotation figures to be short.
May 16 - 12:40 AM

Bruce Chen was lit up for six earned runs in four innings Saturday in a loss to the Twins.

Minnesota tagged him for 10 hits -- including a Torii Hunter solo home run in the top of the first inning. Chen had been pitching well at Triple-A Columbus, but clearly isn't a reliable major league pitcher at this point in his 16-year career. He had a brutal 7.45 ERA in 48 1/3 innings last season with the Royals.
May 9 - 7:21 PM

Indians purchased the contract of LHP Bruce Chen from Triple-A Columbus.

He'll make a spot start against the Twins on Saturday. While he posted a 1.74 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 23/3 K/BB ratio over 31 innings at Columbus, he isn't a recommended streaming option on Saturday. Remember, the 37-year-old owned a hideous 7.45 ERA and 1.76 WHIP across 48 1/3 innings with the Royals last season.
May 9 - 12:21 PM

Bruce Chen will make a spot start for the Indians this Saturday against the Twins.

It was either going to be him or Shaun Marcum. Chen is off to a terrific start this season at Triple-A Columbus and could be worth streaming against a weak Twins lineup. The 37-year-old left-hander signed a minor league contract with the Tribe in February.
May 6 - 5:01 PM

The Indians could call up left-hander Bruce Chen or right-hander Shaun Marcum from Triple-A Columbus to pitch Saturday against the Twins.

The Indians need a fill-in option with TJ House (shoulder) on the disabled list and Zach McAllister appears to have found a home in the bullpen, so Chen and Marcum are the most realistic options. Chen owns a 1.74 over five starts in Triple-A while Marcum has a 2.00 ERA over three starts. The Indians would have to make a move to add either of them to the 40-man roster.
May 5 - 11:54 AM

Bruce Chen picked up a victory in Tuesday's Cactus League outing against the Mariners despite allowing four runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings.

The veteran southpaw did manage to record five strikeouts on the day without issuing a walk, though he did serve up a pair of home runs. He'll take his 6.08 ERA down to Triple-A Columbus where he'll function as rotational depth in the event that the Indians suffer a multitude of injuries in their rotation.
Mar 31 - 10:14 PM

Indians manager Terry Francona said that Bruce Chen has indicated that he will remain with the organization.

Chen signed a minor league deal with the Indians over the winter and was recently informed that he will not make the Opening Day roster. However, the 37-year-old southpaw will apparently stick around in the minors while waiting for an opportunity. The Indians have given him the right to opt out of his contract if an MLB job becomes available.
Mar 25 - 4:06 PM

Bruce Chen was on the hook for three runs in four innings Saturday against the Dodgers.

The 37-year-old Chen was scored upon in each of his final three innings, allowing seven hits and a walk in total with no strikeouts. Chen had a rough go of things with the Royals last season, finishing with a 7.45 ERA in 48 1/3 innings before being released in SEptember. He doesn't have much of a chance at making the Indians' 25-man roster.
Mar 14 - 6:46 PM

Bruce Chen pitched two perfect innings in the Indians' 9-3 win against the Reds on Thursday.

Chen, vying for a big league role with the Indians, whiffed three batters in the process. The 37-year-old left-hander posted a 7.45 ERA in 48 1/3 innings for the Royals last year before he was released. It isn't very likely he makes the Opening Day roster, but a productive spring could lead to something later in the season.
Mar 5 - 6:59 PM

Indians signed LHP Bruce Chen to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Chen, 37, was useful at times during his tenure with the Royals but wound up posting a 7.45 ERA and 1.76 WHIP for them in 2014 before being released. The left-hander will earn $1 million if he makes the big league roster with another $1 million available in incentives. He's a long shot to make any sort of impact in 2015.
Feb 16 - 10:29 PM

Royals released LHP Bruce Chen.

This could be the end of the line for the 37-year-old southpaw who posted a horrifying 7.45 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 36/16 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings on the season.

Royals designated LHP Bruce Chen for assignment.

Chen gets the boot after being pummeled for six runs in an extra-innings loss to the Twins on Thursday. The left-hander had been used sparingly since returning from the DL, so the move isn't terribly surprising. He'll pass through waivers easily given his $3.25 million salary.
