Mets signed C Michael Barrett to a minor league contract.
Barrett hasn't played since an injury-riddled campaign with the Blue Jays last season. The 32-year-old backstop is scheduled to report to Single-A St. Lucie before moving up to Triple-A Buffalo. He'll provide some reasonable insurance for Rod Barajas and Henry Blanco. Tue, Jun 29, 2010 05:00:00 PM

Blue Jays designated catcher Michael Barrett for assignment.

Barrett was a bust in Toronto, playing just seven games before landing on the disabled list with a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season. He's now 33 years old and hasn't had a productive season since 2006, so Barrett looks just about done.

Blue Jays sent catcher Michael Barrett outright to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Barrett was activated from the 15-day disabled list and immediately sent to the minors, where he's been rehabbing his right shoulder since early June. Barrett became expendable when veteran Raul Chavez played well enough to earn the backup job to Rod Barajas.

Michael Barrett (shoulder) went 0-for-2 Tuesday to kick off a rehab assignment with Single-A Dunedin.

Barrett is finally beginning to show some progress. He was placed on the disabled list April 18 and is unlikely to return before the All-Star break. The 32-year-old left behind a .167/.211/.333 batting line, one home run and two RBI.

Michael Barrett played catch Wednesday for just the second time since tearing a muscle in his right shoulder.

Barrett was also able to hit off a tee. "I'm getting there, but it's going to be a long road," he told MLB.com's Jordan Bastian. Barrett may not be ready to contribute until after the All-Star break.

Blue Jays placed catcher Michael Barrett on the 15-day disabled list with a torn muscle in his right shoulder.

He might have a break in the shoulder as well. There was too much swelling for X-rays to be of any use when he was examined last night. With Barrett out, Rod Barajas figures to get five starts a week, boosting his value.. Raul Chavez will take over as the backup.

Michael Barrett left Friday's game in the fourth inning after hurting what appeared to be his shoulder.

He was replaced by regular Rod Barajas. Barrett's injury looked serious and if he's out for any period of time, they will likely recall veteran minor leaguer Raul Chavez. Barrett was playing about a third of the time behind Barajas, who will now take over full time catching duties.

Michael Barrett has been informed that he will make the Blue Jays' final roster as a backup catcher.

Barrett will back up Rod Barajas after batting .250/.289/.361 this spring. He was honored by the decision. "(The conversation) was short," manager Cito Gaston said. "He was sitting down having breakfast and I just walked in and congratulated him and I could see he was a little emotional."

Michael Barrett went 2-for-2 with a double against the Phillies on Tuesday.

Barrett was 1-for-16 when we checked in on him nine days ago. He's going 7-for-9 with four doubles and four RBI since to raise his spring average to .320. His spot on the Jays was never in serious doubt, but if he keeps hitting, maybe he can look forward to getting some starts at DH against lefties.

Michael Barrett went 0-for-3 against the Reds on Sunday.

Barrett is just 1-for-16. The Jays intend to carry him as their backup catcher, but he's not making a case for getting additional playing time as a first baseman or designated hitter against lefties.

ESPN is reporting that the Blue Jays have signed Michael Barrett to a minor league contract.

This could work out quite well if Barrett is healthy. Barrett is a better hitter versus lefties than first baseman Lyle Overbay or the Jays' current options at DH, so the Jays could have both he and Rod Barajas in the lineup a couple of times per week if they choose.

The agents for Michael Barrett are trying to interest the Orioles, Astros and Blue Jays in their client.

A healthy Barrett is a top-10 offensive catcher, but that he's been hurt and he's below average defensively will likely force him to settle for a cheap one-year deal. He might even have to take a minor league contract.

Free agent Michael Barrett expects to continue his career in 2009 after missing the final three months of this season with facial fractures.

Barrett suffered blurry vision and headaches for several weeks after he fouled a fastball off his face in Denver on July 2. "I feel pretty confident everything is improving and will improve in time for me to play next year," he said. "I don't know what exactly the process will be but I plan to be out there, Lord willing."

Padres sent catcher Michael Barrett outright to Triple-A Portland.

Barrett was going to become a free agent after the World Series, but this makes him one a little earlier. The Padres aren't expected to make a bid to re-sign him.

Padres transferred catcher Michael Barrett to the 60-day disabled list.

Barrett, who suffered multiple facial fractures when he was hit by his own foul ball in July, is eligible to return at any time, but it looks like he's done for the season.
