Matt Clement has been hired as the boys' varsity basketball coach at Butler High School in Pittsburgh.
We'll assume that means he has officially hung up his baseball cleats. Clement, 34, stared as a dual athlete at Butler during the early 90s. "I'm very excited and honored to get this opportunity, and I don't take this responsibility lightly," he said Monday. "To coach these kids and lead these kids is something I've always wanted to do." Matt Clement told the Blue Jays on Sunday that he's ending his comeback attempt and plans to retire.

Slowed by shoulder problems the last three years, the 34-year-old ends his career with an 87-86 record and a 4.50 ERA over parts of nine seasons in the Major Leagues.

Blue Jays reassigned RHP Matt Clement, LHP Brian Burres, first baseman Randy Ruiz, catcher Curtis Thigpen and infielder Angel Sanchez to minor league camp.

Clement coughed up nine runs in his outing Sunday, knocking him out of the mix for a rotation spot. He hasn't pitched in a big league game since mid-2006, so whether he sticks with the Blue Jays or lands elsewhere Clement will likely have to prove himself at Triple-A.

Matt Clement was lit up for nine runs -- eight earned -- in 4 1/3 innings by the Twins on Sunday.

The Jays left him in long enough to walk seven batters and give up six hits. This almost certainly dooms Clement's chances of winning a rotation spot. He may want to seek his release rather than go to a hitter's paradise at Triple-A Las Vegas to begin the season.

General manager J.P. Ricciardi said Sunday that Matt Clement "is on the outside looking in right now" for a rotation spot.

Clement hasn't pitched since mid-2006 and signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays in December. "He's really going to have to do some things to make us say he's ahead of those other guys," Ricciardi said.

Matt Clement surrendered two runs in four innings Tuesday in a no-decision against the Rays.

Clement walked three, but he allowed just two hits and got seven outs on the ground. He probably did nothing to hurt his improved chances of landing in the rotation.

Matt Clement turned in three hitless innings out of the pen Wednesday against Team USA.

This has to help his chances of landing a rotation spot a great deal. The only batter to reach against Clement did so on an error, and he struck out one. He's given up one hit in five innings so far this spring.

Matt Clement allowed a run and a hit in two innings Friday in his start against the Tigers.

He walked two and struck out one. Pretty much all of the Jays rotation fourth- and fifth-starter possibilties have options left, so Clement would seem to be in pretty good position to claim a spot if he shows something this spring. If he's awful in April, the Jays can simply call up a youngster to replace him in May.

Blue Jays signed RHP Matt Clement to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Clement missed 2007 after shoulder surgery and wasn't able to pull off a successful comeback last season. He was last seen in the majors posting a 6.61 ERA in 12 starts for the Red Sox in 2006. His shoulder apparently no longer bothers him, so he will be ready to compete for a job in spring training. However, it doesn't appear as though his stuff is coming all of the way back.

The Blue Jays have reportedly inked Matt Clement to a minor league deal.

The Jays have long had a crush on Clement. They were one of the finalists for his services before he chose to sign with the Red Sox four years ago and they tried to add him again a year ago.

While reports have linked the two in recent days, free agent Matt Clement probably won't sign with the Pirates.

Clement's agent, Barry Axelrod, told the Tribune-Review he has not spoken with the Pirates "in a long time" and has moved on to other suitors. "We've made significant progress with other clubs," Axelrod said. We wouldn't be surprised to see Clement land in San Diego.

The Pirates have spoken with free agent pitcher Matt Clement.

Clement had an awful showing in the Cardinals' minor league system last year and hasn't thrown a major league pitch since 2006. He is building a home in Pennsylvania and shouldn't be hard to snag.

Cardinals released RHP Matt Clement from Triple-A Memphis.

Clement had allowed seven earned runs and walked 10 in 13 2/3 innings since being moved to the pen at Triple-A Memphis. Maybe he's not completely hopeless yet, but it had become clear that he wasn't going to contribute this year.

The Cardinals have moved Matt Clement to the Triple-A bullpen.

Time is running out on his 30-day rehab assignment, and he'd allowed 11 earned runs over his last 13 innings as a starter. "Clement has had some good outings but has not been able to do it every fifth day," GM John Mozeliak said.

The Cardinals are considering moving Matt Clement to the bullpen.

Clement has been knocked around in a couple of recent minor league starts. He has nine days left on his 30-day rehab assignment. "I think we’re just going to re-evaluate the rest of the rehab and see if it makes sense to move him into a bullpen situation," GM John Mozeliak said Saturday night. "It seems to be clear it’s going to be difficult for Matt to contribute as a starter. There’s probably a way we can take the remaining time and give him three or four appearances out of the pen instead of two starts. We’ll see what we have then."
