Roy Halladay had surgery on Wednesday to remove a bone spur in his shoulder and repair his torn rotator cuff.
Halladay is hoping to resume throwing in 6-8 weeks and will try to make it back before the end of the 2013 season. The veteran righty had an 8.65 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 35/17 K/BB ratio over his first 34 1/3 innings this season. He can be dropped in all non-keeper leagues. May 16 - 12:48 PM

Date:

Roy Halladay will have surgery next Wednesday to have a bone spur removed from his right shoulder as well as a partially torn rotator cuff and frayed labrum repaired.

The operation will be performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Halladay is optimistic that he will return to pitch later this season, but it's not a given.
May 9 - 8:43 PM

Roy Halladay confirmed Wednesday that he will undergo surgery on his right shoulder.

Halladay will have a bone spur removed from his shoulder as well as a partially torn rotator cuff and frayed labrum addressed. The veteran right-hander is optimistic about pitching again this season, but we should have a better idea about a timetable once the surgery is completed. Either way, he can be dropped in fantasy leagues. Halladay is in the final year of a three-year, $60 million contract.
May 8 - 2:05 PM

Roy Halladay will provide an update on his right shoulder on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET.

Halladay was placed on the disabled list over the weekend with right shoulder discomfort and paid a visit to Dr. Lewis Yocum on Monday. It's not clear if surgery is being discussed, but clearly something isn't right with the veteran right-hander, as he holds a miserable 8.65 ERA in 34 1/3 innings this season. For what it's worth, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday that Halladay "stands a great chance of pitching again this year."
May 8 - 12:27 PM

Phillies placed RHP Roy Halladay on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder injury.

The Phillies aren't exactly sure what's wrong with Halladay, but he has an 8.65 ERA in 34 1/3 innings this season and they're done running him out there. The veteran starting pitcher will visit Dr. Lewis Yocum early this week for a full examination of his right arm. He has been experiencing shoulder discomfort since his April 24 start against the Pirates.
May 6 - 2:52 PM

Roy Halladay is likely headed to the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder injury.

The exact severity of the injury isn't yet known, but Halladay said that he's been dealing with shoulder discomfort since his April 24 start against the Pirates. He'll be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum early this week before any decisions are made. Triple-A starters Adam Morgan and Tyler Cloyd are candidates to take his spot in the Phillies' rotation.
May 5 - 7:33 PM

Roy Halladay coughed up nine earned runs in just 2 1/3 innings Sunday as the Phillies lost to the Marlins.

Halladay has now been rocked in back-to-back outings after showing some small signs of promise in mid-April. He has an 8.65 ERA in 34 1/3 total innings this season. The Phillies can't keep running him out there.
May 5 - 5:45 PM

Roy Halladay allowed eight runs in 3 2/3 innings Tuesday in the Phillies' loss to the Indians.

Things were going so well, too. Halladay had turned in three quality starts in his last three outings before Tuesday's game, so it was certainly disappointing to see him take a step in the wrong direction. Pitchers have bad outings from time to time, but it's hard to give Halladay the benefit of the doubt given his rocky start to the season. Halladay has a more user-friendly matchup Sunday against the Marlins.
Apr 30 - 10:04 PM

Roy Halladay allowed one run over six innings, but the Phillies lost to the Pirates on Wednesday.

Halladay left with a 3-1 lead only to see the bullpen blow it, saddling him with a no-decision. It doesn't take away the fact that Halladay has now made three straight starts where he's gone at least six innings and allowed two runs or fewer. Wednesday was arguably his best start yet, as he allowed only one hit while striking out eight. There was some consternation about Halladay's velocity early on, but it looks like he's learned to pitch with his new limitations. His next start will come Tuesday in an interleague tilt with the Indians.
Apr 24 - 10:22 PM

Roy Halladay gave up a pair of solo homers over seven innings Friday in an 8-2 rain-shortened win over the Cardinals.

The game was called in the seventh inning. The home runs by Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday were the only hits Halladay gave up on the night. He struck out six and walked two in the victory and retired 14 batters in a row at one point. Halladay also showed improved velocity with his fastball, hitting 92 mph in his final inning of work. With back-to-back strong starts under his belt, he'll hope to carry the momentum into a favorable outing against the Pirates next Wednesday.
Apr 19 - 10:17 PM

Roy Halladay tossed eight innings of one-run ball in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Marlins, holding them to five hits while walking one and striking out two.

The outing comes with an asterisk next to it, as a woeful Marlins lineup was made even more laughable with Giancarlo Stanton out with a minor injury. Nevertheless, it has to be considered a step in the right direction after Halladay gave up 12 runs while failing to record an out beyond the fourth inning in his first two starts. Chances are Doc is done as an elite starter, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he's able to figure things out with diminished stuff. He'll get the Cardinals next.
Apr 14 - 4:13 PM

Roy Halladay labored again in Monday's loss to the Mets, allowing seven runs over four-plus innings.

Halladay flat out couldn't put hitters away. He allowed six hits (including a three-run homer by John Buck), three walks and hit a batter. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel brought the hook after he gave up three straight hits to begin the fifth inning. This is the first time Halladay has allowed five or more runs in consecutive starts since joining the Phillies. It's also the first time that he has gone four innings or fewer in back-to-back starts since 2004. His ERA sits at 14.73 through two starts. Something just isn't right.
Apr 8 - 10:09 PM

Roy Halladay allowed six hits and five runs over 3 1/3 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Braves.

All spring Halladay insisted his struggles weren't an issue. So much for that. Halladay's velocity was up, but that was one of the only positives to take from the debut outing. Nine of the 10 outs Halladay recorded were by strikeout, which is promising, but he also allowed two home runs. The 35-year-old's stock is dropping faster than Carnival Cruise reservations.
Apr 3 - 10:40 PM

Roy Halladay was charged with two runs in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in his start against the Blue Jays.

The good news is that Halladay showed a bit better velocity, throwing 88-91 mph, and struck out six today. The bad is that he struggled to get his sinker down and was hit pretty hard as a result. He actually got just 10 outs himself; the other three came on the basepaths. He allowed eight hits and two walks. We're not close to giving up on Halladay for the season, but we wouldn't expect much from him in the early going.
Mar 28 - 2:33 PM

Roy Halladay allowed seven hits and three runs -- two earned -- in four innings against Blue Jays minor leaguers Saturday.

"He was OK. He got his work in," Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said afterwards. Not exactly high praise for the 35-year-old, especially considering the concerns about his velocity this spring. Reports say Halladay generated few swings and misses and that his fastball was sitting between 86 and 89 miles per hour. Halladay might be ready for Opening Day, but how effective he will be is anyone's guess at this point.
