MLB suspended catcher Humberto Cota for 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

Cota didn't think he was cheating. "I want to make it clear that I did not use any banned substances in order to improve my performance," Cota said in a statement. "In July 2007, I had season-ending surgery performed on my left shoulder. During this past winter, while I was a free agent, my shoulder was slow to heal. I took substances that were prescribed for me by a doctor in Mexico." The Rockies will need to find another catcher to keep as veteran insurance in Triple-A.

Nationals signed catchers Humberto Cota and Chad Moeller to minor league contracts and invited them to spring taining.

A couple of veteran alternatives should the Nationals decide Jose Flores is better off playing regularly in Triple-A than serving as Brian Schneider's backup. Cota, a career .233/.280/.358 hitter in 519 at-bats for the Pirates, is the better player of the two, though that's not saying much.

Humberto Cota, who has played in just one game since late-April, will undergo season-ending surgery on his left shoulder.

He's been with the Triple-A team since June.

Pirates designated catcher Humberto Cota for assignment.

Cota, who spent time on the DL last month, was 4-for-14 in five games for the Pirates this season. His departure and Rajai Davis' arrival likely means that Ryan Doumit is in line for more playing time behind the plate.

Pirates activated catcher Humberto Cota from the 15-day disabled list.

Cota will function as a third catcher behind Ronny Paulino and Ryan Doumit. There's not going to be much reason to play him more than once per month.

Humberto Cota (shoulder) is hitting .353 with four RBs during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis.

"I don't think it's a bad thing that he's there," manager Jim Tracy said. "He's catching on a regular basis and getting regular at-bats." Cota was eligible to come off the disabled list on Tuesday, but it appears he will remain in Triple-A until his rehab assignment expires.

Pirates placed catcher Humberto Cota on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 23, with a strained left shoulder.

Pittsburgh could have released Cota Wednesday and been on the hook for just one quarter of his contract, but chose not to.

Pirates agreed to terms with catcher Humberto Cota on a one-year, $537,000 contract.

Whether Cota serves as Ronny Paulino's backup this year could be determined by Ryan Doumit's showing this spring. If the Pirates decide that Doumit should see time at first base, it's more likely that Cota will be kept.

Humberto Cota returned to action on Sunday and went 0-for-4 in three strikeouts.

Cota left his start last Sunday with a right knee contusion. He was probably available to play several days ago, but he's only starting once per week right now.

Humberto Cota left Sunday's game in the second inning with a right knee contusion.

A tough break for Cota, who was starting just his second game of the month. He's not getting any time at all off the bench, so he had appeared in a total of two games in 19 days. Ronny Paulino replaced him.

Despite a 1-for-12 start, Humberto Cota today made his fifth start in eight games. He went 1-for-4.

Ryan Doumit is 2-for-13 with a homer. Pirates manager Jim Tracy thinks defense first, so Cota is going to continue to get a lot of playing time even if Doumit outhits him. Doumit is still the far better bet in NL-only leagues.
