Francisco Cordero will undergo surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder later this month.
Cordero never latched on with a team this winter and can now be ruled out for the entire 2013 season. The 37-year-old right-hander hopes to play winter ball and hasn't given up on eventually returning to the bigs. He posted a 7.55 ERA in 39 1/3 innings last season. Apr 4 - 1:58 PM

Astros released RHP Francisco Cordero.

Cordero went on the DL last month with a sprained toe ligament, and while the toe is better, he recently developed a sore shoulder. The 37-year-old might have to settle for a minor league deal this winter after putting up a 7.55 ERA and 2.01 WHIP over 47 games this season.

Francisco Cordero is experiencing a "cranky" shoulder.

Cordero's sprained toe ligament is healed, but his season could be over because of shoulder soreness that he's developed between throwing sessions. The impending free agent right-hander won't have much of a market this winter, especially if he's unable to make it back this month.

Francisco Cordero (toe) hopes to throw off a mound on Wednesday.

Cordero has played catch for a couple weeks now with no issues. He's on target to return in early September.

Francisco Cordero (toe) has thrown from flat ground and is hoping to work from a mound within the next week.

Cordero has been out since early August with an inflamed toe. He should be able to rejoin the Astros' bullpen in late August or early September.

Francisco Cordero has been diagnosed with a sprained ligament in his toe and is now in a walking boot.

Cordero was placed on the disabled list earlier this month and could struggle to return before the end of the season. He allowed 13 hits and 11 earned runs in five innings with the Astros before landing on the shelf.

Francisco Cordero will have his right foot examined by a Houston doctor this week.

Cordero has been dealing with inflammation in the sesamoid bone in his right foot for a few weeks and was finally placed on the disabled list Friday. Jeff Keppinger and Jason Castro previously dealt with a similar injury and had to have the bone removed, costing them 3-4 months of action. However, Astros manager Brad Mills said surgery is not considered an option at this point for Cordero.

Astros placed RHP Francisco Cordero on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 2, with toe inflammation.

Or terrible-itis. You know, whatever you want to call it. Cordero has allowed 11 runs on 13 hits (two home runs) and four walks over just five innings as a member of the Astros. Wilton Lopez should be first in line for save chances, assuming his elbow holds up.

Francisco Cordero (toe) retired the two batters he faced in a relief appearance Sunday.

Cordero hadn't thrown in four days because of a minor toe injury. The 37-year-old right-hander has been awful so far for the Astros but figures to still get save chances down the stretch. He has a 6.75 overall ERA.

Francisco Cordero (toe) was available out of the bullpen Saturday.

Cordero wasn't available to pitch Friday due to a toe injury. It remains to be seen whether he'll get the ball in the next save opportunity for the Astros after blowing his first two chances.

Francisco Cordero is unavailable Friday due to a toe injury.

It's a minor thing, so consider him day-to-day for now. Wilton Lopez would presumably get the ball in a save situation and should take the closer gig away from the struggling Cordero in time.

Francisco Cordero is unavailable Thursday against the Pirates.

Cordero, who was acquired from the Blue Jays last week, has blown back-to-back save chances while allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over 2 1/3 innings. Wilton Lopez would get the ball in a save situation Thursday and figures to take over the gig before long.

Francisco Cordero blew his second save in as many chances as an Astro in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Reds, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk while recording only two outs.

Coco is cooked. The 37-year-old righty has been every bit as brutal for the Astros as he was for the Blue Jays, allowing a staggering six runs on eight baserunners in just 2 1/3 innings. He's simply no longer capable of retiring major-league hitters. It's hard to imagine Wilton Lopez won't get the ball in the Astros' next save situation.

Francisco Cordero's debut as the Astros closer didn't go so well on Tuesday, as he surrendered three runs on three hits in just 2/3 of an inning.

Cordero was called upon to protect Lucas Harrell's 2-1 lead, and it didn't take him long to give it up. After retiring the first hitter, he allowed a single to Zack Cozart and a two-run homer to Drew Stubbs. As if that damage wasn't enough, Cordero then walked two hitters and allowed an RBI single to Xavier Paul. He doesn't possess the dominant stuff that once made him successful in the ninth inning, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Astros turn to Wilton Lopez for their next potential save chance.

With Brett Myers traded to the White Sox, Francisco Cordero will take over as the Astros' full-time closer.

Cordero was acquired from the Blue Jays on Friday in the Brandon Lyon deal. He has struggled this season, posting a 5.60 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 26/14 K/BB ratio through his first 35 1/3 innings. He does have plenty of experience in the role, however, converting 329 saves in his big league career. He's now a must own in all formats.
