Willy Aybar was arrested and charged with fourth degree assault domestic violence on Wednesday
Aybar was intoxicated and got into an altercation with his wife and admitted to biting her, and his wife also had a bloody towel to her face and a cut lip and an abrasion on her forehead and cheek, police documents said. He pled not guilty to the charge. It's certainly an unfortunate episode, especially considering domestic violence and substance abuse is nothing new for the 29-year-old. Wed, Jun 1, 2011 07:35:00 PM

Willy Aybar has signed with the Edmonton Capitals of the independent North American League.

Aybar was non-tendered by the Rays in December and drew little to no interest in free agency. He's still only 29 years old, so we're thinking he'll find his way back to the major leagues eventually.

Rays non-tendered 1B-DH Willy Aybar.

The Rays declined his $2.2 million option for 2011 last month, but he remained under team control. Aybar, who turns 28 next March, batted just .230/.309/.344 with six homers and 43 RBI over 270 at-bats this past season. The Rays still have interest in bringing him back, but there are plenty of DH/first baseman-types available this winter.

Rays declined 1B Willy Aybar's $2.2 million option for 2011.

Aybar was a useful utilityman for the Rays this year, but his option money wasn't worth the production. He finished with a .230/309/.344 batting line, six homers and 43 RBI over 270 at-bats in 2010. The 27-year-old remains under team control and is eligible for arbitration this winter.

J.B. Long of Bright House Sports Network passed along a report by Tim Kurkjian of that the Rays have filed an injury petition and are attempting to add Willy Aybar to the ALDS roster.

Interesting. The early speculation is that Aybar would replace Rocco Baldelli on the ALDS roster, but we probably won't know anything until the clubhouse opens. Stay tuned.

Willy Aybar hit a three-run pinch-hit home run in the Rays' extra-inning loss Tuesday night.

Aybar's home run put the Rays ahead in a great back-and-forth game between two teams atop the best division in baseball, but the lead didn't stick. Aybar was pinch-hitting for Dan Johnson, who went hitless before leaving. Brad Hawpe didn't play despite the Yankees starting a right-hander, so the Rays' DH situation is still unsettled. Aybar and Hawpe are the favorites, but who knows how this will end.

Willy Aybar hit a walkoff home run in a 3-2 win over the Mariners on Saturday.

He led off the top of the ninth inning with a solo blast to right-center field off right-hander Jesus Colome. Aybar started as the designated hitter against the lefty Jason Vargas on Saturday, but the newly-added Hank Blalock figures to see most of the playing time against right-handers going forward.

Willy Aybar will be unavailable for the next few games due to the birth of his child.

Aybar has been given clearance to fly to St. Petersburg, Florida and will be allowed to return whenever he feels ready. The utilityman is 2-for-16 this season with a home run, a double and two RBI.

Willy Aybar, the Rays' primary utility man last year, returned from his hamstring injury to play in a minor league game on Saturday.

Aybar only played first base, so it has to count as a baby step towards making the opening day roster, but manager Joel Maddon was more upbeat about his chances of being ready for the start of the season after the game. It would probably take a very deep league - and an injury - to make Aybar relevant in fantasy this year.

Rays manager Joe Maddon said Thursday that Willy Aybar has a hamstring injury that "could impact" his readiness for Opening Day.

It's not clear when or how Aybar suffered the injury, though we do know he had been dealing with a wrist injury. The 27-year-old is 5-for-16 this spring and is expected to serve as a utilityman this season.

Willy Aybar homered Saturday in his second appearance since returning from a wrist injury.

It was his first hit in five at-bats this spring. Aybar is a bit behind because of the injury, but since he did play winter ball, that's not a major source of concern.

Willy Aybar (wrist) will be out of action for about a week.

This is due to the same wrist injury Aybar suffered on a check swing during his winter ball stint in the Dominican Republic. It's being treated as precautionary for now, but Aybar is currently wearing a brace on his left wrist. He's aiming to hit again next week.

Willy Aybar (wrist) has yet to begin participating in spring drills.

Aybar had to be called back from the Dominican Winter League this offseason after spraining his left wrist. The Rays had said he would be ready by the start of spring training and would have no restrictions, but that does not appear to be the case. Aybar hit .253 with 12 homers and 41 RBI last season and is expected to resume his utilityman duties this year.

Willy Aybar has been shut down from his winter ball season in the Dominican Republic due to a sprained left wrist.

According to the team, the injury is minor and should not linger into Spring Training. Aybar, who turns 27 in March, batted .253/.331/.416 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI in 296 at-bats with the Rays last season. He's expected to resume his familiar utility role this season.

Willy Aybar's pinch-hit three-run homer in the seventh inning pulled the Rays into a tie with the Orioles on Monday night, opening the door to an eventual 7-6 victory.

The Rays trailed 6-3 when Aybar stepped in for Fernando Perez with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and delivered the clutch blast. Pat Burrell put the Rays in front with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning before the Tampa bullpen slammed the door. The home run was Aybar's 12th of the year.
