Buddy Carlyle has elected free agency.

Carlyle missed most of the season following hip surgery. He was surprisingly effective for the Mets in 2014, but as a soon-to-be 38-year-old coming back from a hip operation, his prospects are looking dim.

Buddy Carlyle is likely out for the season after having surgery to repair a labrum issue in his hip.

Carlyle went on the disabled list back in mid-May with back spasms, but the hip became a bigger concern. The veteran reliever will be a free agent after the season and will turn 38 in December.

Mets transferred RHP Buddy Carlyle from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears space for Jenrry Mejia's return from suspension. Carlyle still isn't throwing as he works his way back from back and hip issues.

Buddy Carlyle (back) is headed to the disabled list.

Carlyle had to leave an appearance Monday after experiencing stiffness in his lower back and hadn't shown much improvement over the last two days. Relief depth will probably be on the way from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Buddy Carlyle recorded a save Monday by retiring the final two hitters of the game in a win over the Nationals.

With Jenrry Mejia (elbow) unavailable, Jerry Blevins got a flyout to start the night before handing it off to Carlyle, who got two groundouts to end it. It was the first career save for the 37-year-old, but the only reason he was used instead of Jeurys Familia is because Familia had already pitched earlier in the game.

Mets purchased the contract of RHP Buddy Carlyle from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Carlyle posted a 1.93 ERA over 10 appearances this spring, which was good enough to win a spot in the Opening Day bullpen. The 37-year-old had a 1.45 ERA and 28/5 K/BB ratio over 31 innings with the Mets last season.

Buddy Carlyle is up to 5 1/3 scoreless innings this spring after retiring all three Cardinals he faced Friday.

Besides Dillon Gee, Carlyle would seem to be the other big beneficiary of Zack Wheeler's injury, as he could now slide into Gee's spot in the pen. It's not a lock yet, but he's in good position.

Mets signed RHP Buddy Carlyle to a minor league contract.

He received an invite to spring training. The 36-year-old hurler posted a 1.45 ERA and 28/5 K/BB ratio over 31 innings with the Mets last season, but he wasn't able to find a major league contract on the open market. Having logged a 5.58 MLB ERA prior to 2014, that development wasn't terribly surprising.
