Vernon Wells hit his 10th home run of the season in the Yankees loss to the Mariners on Wednesday.
It was one of the few bright spots for the Yankees on the night. Wells' resurgent season continues, as he's now hitting .301 to go with his 23 RBI. He's a solid option in mixed leagues for the foreseeable future. May 15 - 10:22 PM

Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer off the Royals' James Shields on Saturday, powering the Yankees to a 3-2 win.

The fifth-inning blast was the only hit in four at-bats for Wells, but it proved to be the difference in the game. The shockingly productive season continues for the veteran outfielder, who is now hitting .281/.331/.500 with eight long balls and 18 RBI. As long as he continues to mash, he needs to be owned and started in most fantasy formats.
May 11 - 9:59 PM

Vernon Wells went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two runs scored in a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays in 11 innings on Saturday.

Wells singled in the top of the 11th and scored the go-ahead run after Aaron Loup made a wild throw on a bunt by Ichiro Suzuki. The veteran outfielder has homered in consecutive days and now has five longballs through 15 games. He had just 11 homers in 77 games with the Angels last season.
Apr 20 - 6:03 PM

Vernon Wells went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Friday's win over the Blue Jays.

Wells had an RBI ground out in the first inning and a solo homer in the seventh. While the acquisition was largely mocked, the veteran outfielder is now hitting .283/.377/.585 with four home runs, four doubles, seven RBI and a .962 OPS through 14 games. He could be worth a shot in deeper mixed fantasy leagues until Curtis Granderson (forearm) returns.
Apr 19 - 9:54 PM

Vernon Wells went 3-for-4 and clubbed his first homer as a Yankee in Wednesday's loss to the Red Sox.

The three-run shot, which came in the eighth inning off Alfredo Aceves, was preceded by a single and a double. Wells walked and scored a run in his first game in pinstripes, so he's been one of the few players on the team that's done a little something early on. Travis Hafner also hit his first homer as a Yankee Wednesday.
Apr 3 - 10:50 PM

Yankees acquired OF Vernon Wells and cash considerations from the Angels for OF Exicardo Cayones and LHP Kramer Sneed.

The trade is officially official. As part of the agreement, the Yankees will cover $13.9 million of the $42 million left on Wells' contract. The 34-year-old is set to make his Yankees' debut on Tuesday night and will serve as the team's primary left fielder in the early part of the season. He'll be worth a look in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues, but we're not expecting a renaissance in the Bronx.
Mar 26 - 3:20 PM

Vernon Wells is expected to take his physical for the Yankees on Tuesday in Tampa, Florida.

The trade won't be official until the physical is completed. The Yankees are going to pay close to $14 million of the $42 million left on Wells' contract, which makes it a relatively decent deal for Anaheim. Wells is expected to start in left field for New York in the early going.
Mar 25 - 12:21 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Angels will cover $29 million of the $42 million owed to Vernon Wells in their trade with the Yankees.

The deal still isn't done, but it looks like the Yankees will have to pay Wells somewhere around $13 million over two years, which is still expensive for a fourth outfielder. Wells has already waived his no-trade clause and his nameplate has been removed from the Angels' clubhouse. A deal should be finalized Monday.
Mar 24 - 7:04 PM

Vernon Wells has approved a trade to the Yankees.

Wells had a no-trade clause that he immediately waived. The deal still isn't official, but it's going to happen and the sides are just working on the particulars. Wells has $42 million left on his contract, so the trade will need to be approved by MLB given the amount of money that's being exchanged. With Curtis Granderson (forearm) sidelined, Wells should open the season as the Yankees' regular left fielder.
Mar 24 - 4:45 PM

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Yankees are in trade talks with the Angels regarding Vernon Wells and a deal "could be done today."

Passan adds that "lots of money would go back to New York" in the deal, which, of course, is a given with Wells having $42 million left on his contract. Wells has a full no-trade clause and has embraced a backup role with the Angels, but perhaps he'd be willing to waive it for what would be an uptick in playing time. The 34-year-old would figure to play pretty regularly in left field until Curtis Granderson returns. Wells has batted just .222/.258/.409 over the last two seasons.
Mar 24 - 3:32 PM

Vernon Wells plans to retire when his contract expires after the 2014 season.

Wells will "only" turn 36 that winter, but he thinks it will be time to devote more to his family at that point. He'll also have made close to $150 million over the course of his career, so he obviously won't need to take another job for the money. Wells, who batted just .230/.279/.403 in 2012, is interested in possibly owning a team eventually, perhaps with friend Torii Hunter.
Feb 25 - 3:42 PM

CBS Sports' Danny Knobler reports that the Angels are unlikely to trade outfielder Vernon Wells.

Knobler hears that the Angels pursued trades in the weeks after signing Josh Hamilton, but that owner Arte Moreno wasn't willing to pay a substantial portion of the two years and $42 million left on Wells' contract. Unless Moreno caves, Wells will continue to be a ridiculously overpaid bench player for the Angels.
Jan 23 - 3:54 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Vernon Wells is "on the Phillies' shopping list."

Heyman also notes that the Phillies are interested in Cody Ross in their quest for a right-handed hitting outfielder, but this is the first we've heard of them being a potential player for Wells. Obviously, the Angels would have to eat most of the $42 million owed to Wells over the next two years for a deal to go down. Wells batted just .230/.279/.403 for the Halos this past season after hitting .218/.248/.412 in 2011.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Angels would have to eat "almost all" of Vernon Wells' contract in a trade with the Yankees.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Saturday that the Yanks might have interest in the veteran outfielder, but Heyman says a deal isn't close to going down. The Angels are fully aware that they'll have to pick up most of the $42 million owed to Wells in order to move him, and the outfielder's no-trade clause is another stumbling block. Wells batted just .230/.279/.403 for the Halos this past season after hitting .218/.248/.412 in 2011.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Yankees may have interest in acquiring the Angels' Vernon Wells.

The two sides discussed the veteran outfielder at the Winter Meetings. Wells would fill the Bombers' need for a powerful right-handed bat in the outfield, but he's owed a whopping $42 million over the final two years of his contract and the Halos would probably have to assume most of that cost in order to deal him. Wells also holds a no-trade clause and would have to approve of the trade.
