Wheeler, 35, had an 8.76 ERA over 12 appearances with the Indians this past season and a 2.32 ERA and 30/13 K/BB ratio over 42 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level. He makes for a worthy flier given his past success.

Indians sent RHP Dan Wheeler outright to Triple-A Columbus.

Wheeler cleared waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. The 34-year-old right-hander was given the boot after posting an ugly 8.76 ERA and 2/7 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings. He'll look to improve at the minor league level.

Indians designated RHP Dan Wheeler for assignment.

Wheeler entered play on Sunday with a mediocre 4.76 ERA. His performance in Cleveland's 12-1 loss to Boston later in the day sealed his fate. Wheeler allowed six runs on five hits and a walk in one inning, swelling his ERA to 8.76 and WHIP to 1.95. With an unsightly 2/7 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings, improvement didn't appear imminent. He'll probably clear waivers, though Wheeler did post a decent 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio across 49 1/3 innings last season with the Red Sox.

Indians purchased the contract of RHP Dan Wheeler from Triple-A Columbus.

Wheeler, who signed a minor league deal over the winter, surrendered 13 runs over 11 innings this spring. However, the veteran right-hander has a lengthy track record of success and should fit nicely in Cleveland's bullpen.

Dan Wheeler has been told he'll make the Indians' Opening Day roster.

Jason Donald and Shelley Duncan have also made the club, while Matt Pagnozzi, Gregorio Petit and Felix Pie will not but will remain in big league camp for now. Wheeler holds an 8.00 ERA this spring but has recorded nine strikeouts.

Dan Wheeler will make $900,000 if he is on Cleveland's major league roster.

Cleveland signed Wheeler to a minor league contract last week that came with an invitation to spring training. The contract includes incentives for appearances ($50,000 for every five from 45-70) and games finished ($50,000 for 35, $75,000 for 40, $125,000 for 45 and 50). Wheeler has a solid chance to crack Cleveland's bullpen after posting a decent 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio across 49 1/3 innings last season with the Red Sox.

Indians signed RHP Dan Wheeler to a minor league contract.

The deal also comes with an invitation to major league spring training, where Wheeler will to attempt to land a spot in the Indians' Opening Day bullpen. He registered a decent 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio across 49 1/3 innings last season with the Red Sox.

According to Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.com, Twins general manager Terry Ryan spoke with the agent for Dan Wheeler on Tuesday.

The Twins are in the market for right-handed relief help, so Wheeler would fit the bill, but one league source tells Mackey that the club has "a couple" pitchers higher up on their list. However, they have told Wheeler's camp to keep in touch. The 34-year-old right-hander posted a 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio over 49 1/3 innings with the Red Sox last season and will likely have to accept a one-year deal this offseason.

According to 1500 ESPN's Darren Wolfson, Dan Wheeler's agent tried to reach out to the Twins on Tuesday.

The Twins' front office is on vacation until after the New Year, so the call fell on deaf ears. Wheeler posted a 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio in 49 1/3 innings this past season for the Red Sox, and would make a nice addition to the middle of the Twins' bullpen. It shouldn't take more than a one-year deal.

Dan Wheeler will decline arbitration from the Red Sox.

It was a little odd to see the Red Sox offer arbitration to the 33-year-old right-hander last month, but they obviously had some sort of handshake agreement in place. Boston would receive a sandwich pick if he signs with another club. Wheeler, a Type B free agent, posted a 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio over 49 1/3 innings this past season.

Dan Wheeler was offered arbitration by the Red Sox.

The Red Sox declined Wheeler's $3 million club option for 2012 a the end of October, so it's odd that they would now make an arbitration offer. Perhaps there's a handshake agreement between the two sides stipulating that the 33-year-old righty will not accept. He posted a 4.38 ERA, 39/8 K/BB ratio and 1.11 WHIP over 49 1/3 innings this past year out of the Boston bullpen.
