Date:

J.C. Romero is slated to open the 2013 regular season in the bullpen at Triple-A Syracuse.

Romero is still with the big league club for now, but he will be officially assigned to the minor leagues before Opening Day. The veteran left-hander signed a minor league contract with the Nationals on March 22.

Nationals signed LHP J.C. Romero to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Romero looked pretty good while pitching for his native Puerto Rico in the WBC, allowing two runs in 4 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. He walked three, though, as control has always been an issue for the southpaw. Romero will not make the Opening Day roster but will represent depth at Triple-A.
Mar 22 - 9:59 AM

J.C. Romero has elected free agency.

Romero was designated for assignment last Friday and has decided to look for another job rather than go to Triple-A Norfolk. The veteran lefty holds a 9.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in 16 big league appearances this season.

Orioles designated LHP J.C. Romero for assignment.

So continues a season of releases and DFAs for the 36-year-old lefty, who says he's considering retirement. Romero hasn't really been a serviceable pitcher since 2008, posting a 4.30 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 90 innings since 2009. His career may be over even if he doesn't retire.

Orioles acquired LHP J.C. Romero from the Indians for INF Carlos Rojas.

He'll take Miguel Socolovich's spot on the active roster. Romero gave up nine runs on 14 hits and two walks in eight innings in 11 appearances with the Cardinals earlier this season, but has held left-handed batters to a .218 batting average and .617 OPS for his career. The O's will hope to catch lightning in a bottle down the stretch.

Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports that the Orioles have acquired left-hander J.C. Romero.

Kubatko notes that Romero opted out of his contract with the Indians, so it appears he signed as a free agent. The 36-year-old southpaw made 11 appearances with the Cardinals earlier this season and posted a 4.01 ERA in 36 appearances between the Phillies and Rockies last year. It's not clear if he'll immediately join the major league roster.

Indians signed LHP J.C. Romero to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Columbus.

Romero has already been released by two different teams this season -- the Cardinals and Orioles -- and seems doubtful to suddenly shine in the Indians' system. The left-hander will act as organizational relief depth.

Orioles released LHP J.C. Romero.

Romero exercised an opt-out clause in his contract and was granted free agency. He'll look to sign elsewhere as organizational relief depth.

By the All-Star Break, the Orioles will need to make a roster decision regarding reliever J.C. Romero, who has an opt-out option in his contract.

Romero is currently on the inactive list for Triple-A Norfolk because he is dealing with a personal issue. The southpaw, released by the Cardinals in May after allowing 14 hits and nine runs in eight innings, would act as a left-handed specialist out of middle relief if Baltimore decides to give him a shot. Miguel Tejada, meanwhile, has a sort of unofficial mutual opt-out option. He can continue to play in the O's organization until either party is discontent with the situation, assuming the veteran shortstop isn't summoned to the bigs.

Orioles signed LHP J.C. Romero to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk.

Cardinals released LHP J.C. Romero.

Romero allowed 14 hits and nine earned runs in eight innings with the Cardinals. The veteran left-hander will presumably try to latch on with another organization. St. Louis has recalled 23-year-old Eduardo Sanchez.

J.C. Romero was shelled in Monday's win over Arizona, surrendering five runs on four hits and a walk without retiring a batter.

It was a 7-0 Cardinals lead when he entered in the seventh inning, as the game almost got away from them. Going back to Saturday's contest, the last seven hitters Romero has faced have reached base: one walk, two singles, two doubles, and two homers. All seven have scored, catapulting the reliever's ERA to 10.50.

J.C. Romero set down both batters he faced in the seventh inning of Thursday's 6-3 loss to Pittsburgh.

He did allow an inherited runner from second base to score. But his ERA remains at 0.00 through 4 2/3 relief innings this season.

Cardinals signed LHP J.C. Romero to a one-year contract.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that Romero will receive $750,000 guaranteed, with the chance to earn more through incentives. Romero posted a rough 4.01 ERA and 19/15 K/BB ratio in 24 2/3 overall innings this past year for the Phillies and Rockies, but he's still dominant against left-handed hitters and should fit nicely into the St. Louis bullpen.
