Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors has confirmed that outfielder Pat Burrell is retiring from baseball.

Burrell, bothered by a chronic right foot injury since 2010, hinted that he was planning to call it quits back in November. And he's now ready to make it official. The 35-year-old outfielder will finish with a .253/.361/.472 career batting line, 292 career home runs and 976 career RBI. He played for the Phillies, Rays and Giants.

Pat Burrell was not offered arbitration by the Giants.

Burrell acknowledged earlier this month that his playing career is likely over. He batted .230 with a .756 OPS in 219 plate appearances this past year for San Francisco.

Pat Burrell acknowledged Thursday that his playing career has likely come to an end.

The 35-year-old free agent has been plagued by a chronic right foot injury since 2010 and is no longer a reliable bench player. Burrell, if he's truly done, will finish up with a .253/.361/.472 career batting line.

In the lineup for the first time since Sept. 3, Pat Burrell went 1-for-3 before being removed from Wednesday's game against the Rockies.

Burrell had been 0-for-7 this month, so it's nice to see him finish off the season, and maybe his career, with one hit. His foot problems have left his future up in the air. He's physically capable of serving as a DH, but since he was such a failure with the Rays in that role, it's probably not an option.

Pat Burrell will start in left field in Wednesday's season finale against the Rockies.

Burrell hasn't played the field since September 3 due to a chronic strain to his right foot, but acknowledged Tuesday that he wanted to play because Wednesday could be his final game in the big leagues. "I don't know what's going to happen next year, and if there was something at stake, I wouldn't ask," said Burrell. "Now that we're winding down, I kind of politicked my way into it." Burrell, 34, has a .253 lifetime batting average to go along with 292 home runs and 976 RBI.

Pat Burrell returned to action as a pinch-hitter on Wednesday, finishing 0-for-1 in a 3-1 loss to the Padres.

With the Giants down 2-1 in the seventh inning, Burrell pinch-hit with two on and one out. He flied out in what turned out to be a rally-ending double play, as the tying run was tagged out digging for home. Dealing with a sore foot has prevented the veteran from trying to get back on track this season. He has only 18 at-bats since June 30, from which he's compiled only three singles. Burrell is literally limping to the finish line.

Pat Burrell (foot) is considered day-to-day and is available to pinch-hit Sunday.

Burrell had to exit Saturday's game due to his nagging foot ailment. He's a poor bet to play much down the stretch.

Pat Burrell was removed from Saturday's game with a sore right foot.

It's the same foot that shelved Burrell for part of July and all of August. In his first start since coming off the disabled list, he could not make it past the third inning. The Giants may have to shut him down again.

Giants activated OF Pat Burrell from the 15-day disabled list.

He'll take one of the roster spots vacated by Miguel Tejada and Aaron Rowand. Burrell was 3-for-13 (.231) over four rehab games between High-A San Jose and Triple-A Fresno while rehabbing a bone spur in his right foot. Giants manager Bruce Bochy hasn't dismissed using him in the outfield, but we suspect he will mostly function as a right-handed bat off the bench.

Pat Burrell (foot) went 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI in his first minor league rehab game with High-A San Jose on Wednesday.

Burrell, who is currently rehabbing from a bone spur in his right foot, served as the designated hitter. He is scheduled to take the day off Thursday before DH-ing again Friday. It's still no sure thing that he'll be able to play through the pain and even if he does, he will likely just be a right-handed bat off the bench in September.

Pat Burrell (foot) might end up retiring if he determines that he's unable to play on his chronically injured foot.

Burrell will DH in a rehab game with High-A San Jose Wednesday before taking Thursday off and DHing again somewhere on Friday. There's been no indication that the pain in his foot has subsided, so he'll evidently just see how much he can take. At best, he'll probably be limited to pinch-hitting duty in September.

Pat Burrell (foot) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday with High-A San Jose.

He'll serve as the designated hitter Wednesday. Burrell hasn't played since July 14 due to a bone spur in his right foot. The 34-year-old was batting .233/.342/.419 with seven homers and a .760 OPS prior to the injury, but he won't be of much use to the Giants if he can't run without discomfort.

Pat Burrell (foot) has been able to take swings without discomfort, but still can't run.

The Giants aren't expecting Burrell, who has a bone spur in his foot, to return until the middle of September. He's batting .233/.342/.419 this year with seven home runs.
Tue, Aug 16, 2011 09:30:00 AM

Giants manager Bruce Bochy is expecting Pat Burrell (foot) to return to the Giants sometime in September.

That is, if Burrell doesn't opt to undergo foot surgery. If he chooses to have the procedure, his career and season could both be over. The veteran outfielder is the owner of a .233/.342/.419 triple slash line with seven homers in 172 at-bats.
