Josh Beckett announced after the Dodgers were eliminated Tuesday that he plans to retire from baseball.

Beckett will undergo surgery next May to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, but he doesn't plan to continue pitching after the three-month rehab process. "I just don't see me going through that rehab and coming back to pitch at this point in my life," he said. Beckett, 34, is one of just nine players ever to throw a no-hitter and also be World Series MVP. He went 138-106 while posting a 3.88 ERA over 14 seasons and was a three-time All-Star.

Dodgers transfer RHP Josh Beckett from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Beckett is done for the season because of a lingering hip injury. He's likely to undergo surgery.
Sep 6 - 6:12 PM

Josh Beckett (hip) admitted Friday that he will not return before the end of the 2014 season.

Beckett continues to struggle in his recovery from a right hip impingement and is likely to undergo surgery. He isn't ready to retire just yet, but hasn't fully committed to playing in 2015.
Sep 5 - 7:02 PM

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday that Josh Beckett (hip) pitching again this season is "probably not very possible."

Beckett is dealing with a right hip impingement and needs to decide whether to undergo surgery. Even if he opts for rest and rehab over an operation, he's almost surely done for the year. Beckett has pitched well this season when healthy, posting a 2.88 ERA and 107/39 K/BB ratio over 115 2/3 innings. The 34-year-old will be a free agent this winter.
Sep 3 - 1:48 PM

Josh Beckett (hip) did some throwing from a seated position on Saturday.

It's not much, but it's the first time he's done any kind of throwing since landing on the disabled list earlier this month with a right hip impingement. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has indicated that Beckett might not return this season, but he made just to note Saturday that the righty coming back hasn't been ruled out. "The fact that he’s trying to throw tells you he’s trying to get himself ready in one shape or another," Mattingly said.
Aug 24 - 11:36 AM

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly indicated Tuesday that Josh Beckett (hip) might not return this season.

Mattingly said that it's going to be "a while" before Beckett resumes throwing. "At this point, he's been out a little bit," Mattingly said. "It's going to take him awhile before he can start throwing. Once that happens, it's going to take him a little while to get built up. Is there going to be enough time? I'm not sure." The Dodgers have added Roberto Hernandez and Kevin Correia since the trade deadline, moves that no doubt were made in part because of Beckett's uncertainty.
Aug 19 - 10:16 PM

Dodgers placed RHP Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip impingement.

This move doesn't come as a major surprise, as he has been trying to pitch through a labrum tear and two cysts in his hip for some time now. Roberto Hernandez will take his spot on the roster and in the rotation, as he takes on Brewers on Friday.
Aug 8 - 6:02 PM

Josh Beckett underwent an MRI on his hip and will likely be placed on the disabled list.

Beckett has been trying to pitch through a labrum tear and two cysts in his hip, but he has really struggled some coming off the disabled list, so the Dodgers have apparently decided to shut him down. It's very possible that he could be done for the year. The Dodgers acquired Roberto Hernandez from the Phillies on Thursday and will have him take Beckett's spot in the rotation on Friday.
Aug 7 - 4:46 PM

Josh Beckett allowed three runs on six hits over four innings in a loss to the Cubs on Sunday.

Beckett was fortunate to escape with just three runs allowed, as he walked three to go with his six hits allowed. It was the third consecutive start in which Beckett has failed to make it five innings, but Sunday was the first loss he's taken in that span. Beckett's 2.88 ERA belies how bad he's been in recent starts, and he's a risky start when the Dodgers travel to Milwaukee to face the Brewers on Friday.
Aug 3 - 9:23 PM

Josh Beckett was bombed for four runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision Tuesday versus the Braves.

It was a nightmare from the outset, as Beckett also walked four. Fortunately, his offense and bullpen bailed him out in the 8-4 victory. Beckett was thrilled to see the Braves after not facing them for more than five years -- he entered the night 6-0 with a 0.38 ERA in his last seven outings against the club. Beckett was 0-4 with a 3.30 ERA in his last five home starts. The veteran gets the Cubs in Los Angeles next time around.
Jul 30 - 2:01 AM

Josh Beckett went home with a no-decision after allowing four runs in 3 2/3 innings in Tuesday's 12-7 loss to the Pirates.

The Pirates had Beckett's number, bashing five extra-base hits against the right-hander before chasing him with two outs in the fourth. Gregory Polanco, Neil Walker, and Ike Davis each homered against him. Overall, Beckett allowed six hits, walked none, and struck out four. The veteran has otherwise had a great season, now carrying a 2.52 ERA with a 2.52 ERA and a 99/32 K/BB ratio. He'll match up against the Braves at home next Wednesday.
Jul 22 - 11:14 PM

Dodgers activated RHP Josh Beckett from the 15-day disabled list.

Beckett will return to the Dodgers' starting rotation on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh after sitting out for over two weeks with a hip injury. He still has a labrum tear and some cysts, but the veteran right-hander is going to try to pitch through the discomfort with the help of cortisone injections. Beckett boasts a 2.26 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 95/32 K/BB ratio in 103 2/3 innings this season.
Jul 22 - 3:57 PM

Josh Beckett (hip) will be activated from the disabled list to start Tuesday against the Pirates.

That was the hope all along, but it's now official. Beckett is dealing with a labrum tear and two cysts in his hip, but he's feeling better after a cortisone injection and will attempt to pitch through it.
Jul 21 - 5:13 PM

Josh Beckett admitted that he felt "better than expected" on Saturday after throwing off a mound for the first time since his cortisone injection.

His MRI revealed a small labrum tear in his hip, though it's believed to be something that he can pitch through. The team remains hopeful that Beckett will be cleared to rejoin the rotation against the Pirates on Tuesday.
