Free agent John Patterson said Wednesday that he is retiring from baseball because of persistent pain in right forearm.
Patterson is just 30, but he's spent the last three years battling soreness and two surgeries haven't done the trick. "I started throwing about a month ago and it hasn't been going well," Patterson said. "I have my good days and I have my bad days. So I decided to not play any more. I'm going to retire." If the pain goes away, he could always come back. If not, he finishes what was a promising career 18-25 with a 4.32 ERA. In 2005, his one full season as a major league starter, he had a 3.13 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 198 1/3 innings for the Nats. Wed, Jan 7, 2009 01:23:00 PM

Rangers released RHP John Patterson.

Patterson is out for the year with a sore right forearm. He hasn't been healthy since 2005 and probably won't gain much interest on the free agent market until he is.

John Patterson experienced a setback while pitching in extended spring training and has been shut down because of continued forearm soreness.

"He was not happy with the way the ball was coming out of his hand, and he had some pain in his forearm again," pitching coach Mark Connor said. Patterson hasn't been healthy since 2005 and is a long shot to be a fantasy asset at any point this season.

John Patterson has been working out in extended spring training and threw a bullpen session Monday.

Patterson said afterward that he's about a week away from being ready for game action and the Dallas Morning News speculates that he could begin a minor league rehab assignment in mid-May. Patterson is able to opt out of his contract with the Rangers if he's not in the majors by June 15.

General manager Jon Daniels said Monday that John Patterson is unlikely to pitch in the minors before May 1.

Patterson can opt out of his contract with the Rangers if he's not in the majors by June 15.

Rangers signed John Patterson to a minor league contract.

Patterson will serve mostly as an insurance policy, starting the season at Triple-A Oklahoma. He has a relationship with Texas pitching coach Mark Connor from their days together in Arizona, and said that was a big reason he signed with the Rangers. "He understands what I need," Patterson said. He'll start a long-toss program on Tuesday, and the Rangers expect him to be ready to pitch in the minors in late April or early May.

The Rangers are close to signing John Patterson.

The Rangers' rotation is set, but they like Patterson as a low-risk option in case of an injury. If Patterson signs with the Rangers, he will start the season at Triple-A Oklahoma.

The Astros believe they have the inside track on landing John Patterson.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Patterson is from Orange, Texas and likes the idea of pitching for the Astros. Patterson's agent actually reached out to the Astros on Thursday to let them know of the pitcher's interest. Patterson would likely start out in AAA, but could easily find a spot at the end of the Astros rotation, with Woody Williams having such an awful spring.

The Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros are interested in John Patterson.

Several teams figure to make a run at Patterson after he was surprisingly released by the Nationals, but the Astros are seemingly a good fit. "We'll take a look at it and see if anything makes sense," general manager Ed Wade said. "We'll look at the possibility of doing something."

Nationals released RHP John Patterson.

Stunning. Obviously the Nationals shared the same concerns about Patterson's lack of velocity that we did, but he still looked like their probable Opening Day starter and they'll only save about $600,000 by cutting him. They're left with a rotation of Shawn Hill, Jason Bergmann, Tim Redding, Odalis Perez and either Matt Chico or John Lannan. They'll probably need both young lefties initially with Hill likely to open up on the DL.

John Patterson, who complained of some arm tightness following a poor outing Sunday, said his arm felt fine on Monday.

Patterson said he didn't have any pain. It might just be a dead-arm phase.

John Patterson was tagged for six runs and eight hits in four innings by the Orioles on Sunday.

Patterson has a 7/0 K/BB ratio in nine innings this spring, but his ERA stands at 7.00 anyway. His fastball is awfully hittable since he lacks his old velocity right now. The hope is that he'll slowly get it back as he gets in additional innings.

John Patterson pitched shutout ball for three innings Tuesday in a 2-2 tie against the Braves.

The Nationals played 11 innings and seemingly wanted to go a 12th, but the game was called. Patterson got through his outing without a problem even though he wasn't throwing any harder than 86-87 mph. It's hard to imagine him succeeding in the regular season with that kind of velocity, but he could pick up a few more mph as he continues his recovery from elbow surgery.

John Patterson gave up one earned run and four hits in 2 2/3 innings in a minor league game on Friday.

Patterson was supposed to face the Mets last night, but the game was rained out.

John Patterson allowed one run in two innings Saturday versus Baltimore in his spring debut.

Patterson hasn't had any setbacks as he attempts to return from a second surgery to decompress the radial nerve in his elbow. He's the favorite to start on Opening Day for the Nats, especially now that Shawn Hill needs some time off.
