Downs was released by the White Sox earlier this month after posting a 6.08 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and 22/15 K/BB ratio in 23 2/3 innings. However, the 38-year-old has obviously had plenty of success in the past and is worth a shot at the veteran minimum.

Downs had a 6.08 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and 22/15 K/BB ratio in 23 2/3 innings this season for Chicago. He's a left-hander with a good track record, so the 38-year-old will likely draw interest from multiple teams on waivers.

Scott Downs notched a four-out save Monday against the Indians.

Downs came on to strike out David Murphy with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning and worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to lock down the victory. It was his first save since July 23, 2012. He could continue to get more chances if Robin Ventura decides to go with a committee in the late innings.

White Sox signed LHP Scott Downs to a one-year, $4 million contract with a $4.25 million club option for 2015.

The deal was agreed to in December and then made official Thursday after Downs passed his physical. The veteran southpaw posted a cool 2.49 ERA in 43 1/3 innings of work last season between the Angels and Braves. He'll serve as a lefty specialist and middle reliever for Chicago.

Jon Morosi of FOX Sports is reporting that free agent reliever Scott Downs is close to an agreement with the White Sox.

Morosi's colleague at FOX Sports, Ken Rosenthal, reports that the deal is for one year and around $4 million with a vesting option that could make it a two-year, $8 million deal. Downs will be 38 when the 2014 regular season begins but he has showed no signs of slowing down. With the Angels and Braves last season, the lefty posted a combined 2.49 ERA in 43 1/3 innings of work, striking out 37 and unintentionally walking 17.
