Downs hadn't pitched in four days because of discomfort on his right side, but it appears that he will avoid a trip to the disabled list. The left-handed reliever has a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings of work this season.

Downs is likely dealing with a strained oblique, though the Angels are only saying that he has an injury to his right side. It sounds like they'll hold off putting him on the DL for now, but manager Mike Scioscia admitted that a move might eventually be needed. "Scottie's really important to us and we wouldn't want to do a premature DL if he's only going to need four or five days," Scioscia said. "But you might have to consider some things."

Angels activated LHP Scott Downs from the 15-day disabled list.

Downs missed just over the minimum with a shoulder issue and will serve in a setup role behind Ernesto Frieri. Jordan Walden is expected to rejoin the Angels' bullpen, but the team has yet to make anything official.

Scott Downs (shoulder) will throw another bullpen session Tuesday that "may evolve into a simulated game," according to Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

Downs got through a pen session Sunday without any issues and appears close to rejoining the team's bullpen. He's not expected to require a rehab assignment.

Scott Downs (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen session Sunday and could be ready in about a week.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia told reporters after the workout that Downs will probably be able to skip a minor league rehab assignment. The veteran left-hander has been sidelined since July 31 with a shoulder strain.
