Scott Linebrink (shoulder) threw a bullpen session in St. Louis on Sunday.

Linebrink is still considered weeks away from a return, but he's finally showing some signs of progress. Assuming he avoids a setback, he could rejoin the Cardinals bullpen before the All-Star break.

Linebrink is finally showing some progress with his right shoulder capsulitis. If he doesn't have any more setbacks, he should be ready sometime in June.

Scott Linebrink (shoulder) is currently playing catch from a distance of 90 feet.

Linebrink will stretch it out to 120 feet before throwing off flat ground. The hope is that he'll be ready to throw off a mound by the Cardinals' current seven-game homestand. The veteran right-hander has been on the disabled list all season with right shoulder capsulitis.

Scott Linebrink (shoulder) resumed playing catch Tuesday.

Linebrink had been shut down after experiencing more inflammation in his right shoulder. He'll play catch and long-toss for several days before hopefully returning to the mound. He's had a few setbacks, so it's no guarantee that he'll be back anytime soon.

Scott Linebrink plans to resume throwing this weekend after receiving a pain-relieving shot in his right shoulder.

Linebrink, who was placed on the DL after the first game of the season due to shoulder capsulitis, experienced renewed right shoulder tightness during a bullpen session Sunday. There's currently no timetable for his return.

Scott Linebrink experienced renewed right shoulder tightness during a Sunday bullpen session.

Linebrink will visit with an orthopedist this week to determine whether he has suffered a significant setback. The veteran right-hander has been on the disabled list since the start of the regular season because of shoulder capsulitis and remains out indefinitely.

He threw 25 pitches in the first of what should be two or three sessions. It's a step in the right direction for Linebrink, who hasn't pitched since spring training. If all goes well, he could return to the Cardinals by mid-May.

Linebrink said he no longer feels pain, but that flexibility is "the biggest issue right now." The veteran right-hander would seem to be on track to return in early May if all goes well.

Cardinals placed RHP Scott Linebrink on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 30, with right shoulder capsulitis.

Linebrink pitched well this spring, posting a 0.93 ERA in 9 2/3 innings, but he suffered the injury in his final appearance. It's not clear at this point how long the veteran reliever might be out. Victor Marte replaces him in the bullpen.

Scott Linebrink has flown back to St. Louis to undergo an MRI on his sore right lat.

The 35-year-old right-hander is expected to land on the 15-day disabled list and the Cardinals are expected to promote reliever Victor Marte in a corresponding move. Linebrink posted a cool 0.93 ERA in 9 2/3 innings this spring but apparently came down with some inflammation before the Redbirds headed north.

Cardinals purchased the contract of RHP Scott Linebrink.

In other words, Linebrink has officially been added to the 40-man roster and will make the Cardinals' bullpen. The 35-year-old right-hander has an 0.93 ERA and 2/1 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 innings this spring and should pitch in middle relief for St. Louis.

Linebrink skipped a scheduled live batting practice session late last week after tweaking his right hamstring during a conditioning drill. The 35-year-old right-hander is already back on track, and will continue fighting for a spot in the Cardinals' Opening Day bullpen.

Linebrink felt some tightness while running during conditioning drills. However, the issue is believed to be minor and he should resume throwing in a day or two. The 35-year-old right-hander signed a minor league deal with the Cards in February and is competing for a bullpen spot this spring.

He'll also get a spring training invite. Linebrink, 35, compiled a 3.64 ERA and 42/21 K/BB ratio over 54 1/3 innings with the Braves last season. He'll need to have an impressive showing this spring to win a bullpen spot.

Dr. James Andrews recommended surgery and reportedly expressed amazement that Garcia pitched as well as he did earlier this season under the circumstances. The Cardinals' team doctor will perform the shoulder procedure. It's safe to say that Garcia will not contribute in a meaningful way for the rest of the 2013 season. May 22

Westbrook tried throwing from a mound Wednesday for the first time since landing on the DL but had to stop after 20 pitches due to lingering pain in his right elbow. The Cardinals don't believe he has structural damage in the elbow, but clearly he's not ready to return anytime soon. It's not clear what the next step for the right-hander is. May 24

	6	Chris Carpenter D.L. CBS Sports' Scott Miller reports that the Cardinals are hoping that Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) is able to join the starting rotation in late June or early July. Carpenter was originally considered unlikely to pitch this season due to a lingering nerve condition in his shoulder and neck. However, he has been encouraged by his throwing program and has suddenly progressed from an option for the bullpen to the starting rotation. The 38-year-old has already stretched himself out to 80 pitches and could begin facing live hitters next week if all goes well.
