Phillies transferred C Brian Schneider to the 60-day disabled list.

This is strictly a procedural move. Schneider (hamstring) is out for the year, and could struggle to attract anything more than a minor league contract this offseason.

Schneider was cleared for a rehab assignment at High-A Clearwater, but remains doubtful to be added to the Phillies' roster. Erik Kratz will continue to get an extended look down the stretch.

Schneider just returned from an ankle injury on July 31. Splitting time with Erik Kratz in the absence of Carlos Ruiz, Schneider was hitting .200/.273/.300 in August. The 35-year-old backstop will be a free agent in the offseason.

Sean Rodriguez slammed into Schneider in the sixth. Schneider was slow to rise, tried to stay in the game, but ultimately took himself out one pitch later. Carlos Ruiz finished the game behind the dish.

Owning a .280/.308/.440 batting line, Schneider is officially playing over his head. The veteran back-up catcher will continue to earn regular playing time until Carlos Ruiz returns from his hamstring injury.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that he could make an additional $200,000 with incentives. Schneider, who turns 35 later this month, batted just .176/.246/.256 with two homers and a .502 OPS over 139 plate appearances this season. They could have found an upgrade elsewhere, but the Phillies are apparently comfortable with him as Carlos Ruiz's primary backup catcher.

The Phillies are close to re-signing Brian Schneider to serve as Carlos Ruiz's backup, FOXSports.com reports.

Schneider hit just .176/.246/.256 for the Phillies last season, but the team likes the way he contributed defensively. It's doubtful that he'll be a whole lot better next year.
