Cubs manager Mike Quade said Augie Ojeda ‘‘isn’t real close’’ to returning from the back spasms that have sidelined him for over a week.

Ojeda was invited to camp as a non-roster invitee and his chances of winning a roster spot have notably decreased due to the injury. Darwin Barney, who is batting .382 so far and playing his usual good defense, is the front-runner for the last infielder spot.

Cubs signed INF Augie Ojeda to a minor league contract.

He'll also get an invite to spring training. The 36-year-old Ojeda was non-tendered by the Diamondbacks in December after batting just .190 over 79 at-bats last season. While Ojeda has a .237 batting average and just one home run dating back to the start of the 2008 season, he is a quality defender at both middle infield positions and the hot corner.

Diamondbacks non-tendered INF Augie Ojeda.

Another expected move. Ojeda, who turns 36 in December, batted just .190 in 79 at-bats with the Diamondbacks this past season while serving as a backup infielder. A fan favorite, Ojeda became expendable after the recent signing of Geoff Blum.

T.R. Sullivan of reports that the Rangers are still talking to the Diamondbacks about infielder Augie Ojeda.

The Rangers continue to look for someone to fill the void left by Omar Vizquel, who signed with the White Sox this winter, and Khalil Greene, whose contract was voided at the beginning of camp. According to Sullivan, the Rangers have offered right-hander Luis Mendoza, however the Diamondbacks are currently asking for too much in return.

The Diamondbacks have decided not to pursue a trade of Augie Ojeda at the moment, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

With the signing of Kelly Johnson to be the second baseman, there was some thought to Arizona trading Ojeda. However, the team hasn't received an offer it deemed acceptable, so Ojeda will head into spring training with the team, duking it out with Tony Abreu for the backup infield spot. Abreu has options, so Ojeda should win the job, although it's likely he finishes 2010 elsewhere.

Diamondbacks agreed to terms with infielder Augie Ojeda on a one-year, $825,000 contract.

Ojeda, who turns 35 next week, was likely to be non-tendered on Saturday if he did not agree to a new deal. He batted just .246/.340/.345 with one home run and 16 RBI in 264 at-bats with Arizona in '09, but carries the reputation as fine glove-man around the infield.

Richard Durrett of reports that the Rangers have asked about Diamondbacks infielder Augie Ojeda.

Ojeda, 35, is arbitration-eligible this winter and would fit the bill as the type of utility man the Rangers are seeking. He batted .246/.340/.345 with one home run and 16 RBI in 264 at-bats with Arizona in '09 while playing second base, third base and shortstop.

Augie Ojeda collected three hits, three RBI, and two runs scored as the Diamondbacks defeated the Padres 7-4 on Sunday.

Ojeda hit an RBI double in the fourth and then added a two-run double in the seventh. Ojeda also added a single in the contest as the Diamondbacks improved to 68-88. The disappointing season, which currently has the Diamondbacks in line for the seventh pick in the draft, will likely be just the third time in 12 years the expansion team has finished last in their division.

Augie Ojeda went 3-for-4 with three RBI in Arizona's 10-inning 5-3 victory over the Dodgers on Monday night.

Ojeda first put the D-Backs on the board with a two-run double in the second, and eight innings later he walked in an insurance run in the top of the 10th after Rusty Ryal had put Arizona in front with a solo homer to lead off the inning. Ojeda also drew a walk in the game, and holds a solid .342 OBP despite his .244 average.

Augie Ojeda (groin) is likely to sit out Friday against the Brewers.

Ojeda missed Thursday's game as well with a minor groin injury. Josh Wilson started in his placed and is likely to get the nod at shortstop again Friday night. Ojeda is missing out on some excellent face time with Stephen Drew sidelined.

Augie Ojeda is out with a groin injury.

Ojeda likely hurt his groin running the bases Wednesday, but the injury isn't serious, according to manager Bob Melvin. He was replaced in the lineup by Josh Wilson, who was recalled from the minors a few days ago.

The Diamondbacks and Augie Ojeda have reportedly avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $712,500 contract.

It suggests that Ojeda would have been non-tendered had he not signed this week. He's strictly a utilityman for the Diamondbacks, and the team still would likely prefer to secure two superior options at second base.

Augie Ojeda, who hadn't played since May 25 because of a strained groin, was used as a pinch-hitter on Monday and popped up with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Conor Jackson could have been available and Jeff Salazar definitely was available, yet Ojeda was the choice to hit with the Diamondbacks down a run in the ninth. He's come through a few times this year, but in the end, he's still Augie Ojeda.

Augie Ojeda is likely to miss a few days after suffering a strained groin during the ninth inning of Sunday's game.

If it turns out to be more serious than expected, Ojeda could be placed on the DL to make room for Chad Tracy. Otherwise, Robby Hammock is likely to be sent out.
