Nelson Figueroa - S - Diamondbacks

Nelson Figueroa helped eliminate Team USA from the World Baseball Classic on Friday by tossing six shutout innings as part of a 4-3 victory for Puerto Rico.

Figueroa wasn't bringing much velocity, but he kept Team USA guessing by working both sides of the plate with precision. The 38-year-old journeyman gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out two. Team USA had plenty of chances after Figueroa left the game, but they failed to capitalize. With the win, Puerto Rico has clinched a spot in the WBC semifinals in San Francisco while Team USA has been eliminated from the tournament.

Nelson Figueroa - S - Diamondbacks

Nelson Figueroa has been blocked by the Puerto Rican Baseball League from playing for the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series.

Figueroa, who is of Puerto Rican descent, was on loan by the Puerto Rican League to Leones del Escogido in the Dominican. And now Puerto Rico doesn't want him to compete against their own squad. The 38-year-old right-hander plans to pitch for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic next month.

The 38-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched at the big league level since posting an 8.69 ERA and 2.10 WHIP in 29 innings with the Astros in 2011. He'll serve as nothing more than organizational depth.

Figueroa was released by the Yankees last week after posting a 3.96 ERA and 36/25 K/BB ratio over 72 2/3 innings this season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He'll serve as starting pitching depth with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Yankees signed RHP Nelson Figueroa to a minor league contract.

Evidently the Blue Jays must have cut him loose at some point over the last month, as he failed to make their team as a non-roster invitee but didn't appear for them in the minors. Figueroa, who held an 8.69 ERA in 29 innings last year for the Astros, will offer the Yanks flexibility at Triple-A with the ability to start or relieve.

Nelson Figueroa was assigned to minor league camp.

The 37-year-old reliever allowed two hits and issued two walks in two Grapefruit League innings, while striking out no one. Figueroa was a longshot to make the Blue Jays' roster from the get-go after signing a minor league deal in January. He'll try to make himself worthy of an in-season callup from afar at Triple-A Las Vegas.

He'd earn a $650,000 salary on the big league roster. Figueroa, 37, posted an ugly 8.69 ERA and a 17/16 K/BB ratio over 29 innings with the Astros last season before being granted his release in early-August. He's likely a longshot to make the Opening Day roster.

Figueroa was removed from the starting rotation at the end of April and hasn't been much better out of the bullpen. He gets the boot after posting an ugly 8.89 ERA and 14/14 K/BB ratio over 27 1/3 innings. He has enjoyed some success in the past, so it will be interesting to see if another team makes a claim.

Nelson Figueroa has been bumped from the Astros' rotation in favor of rookie Aneury Rodriguez.

Figueroa drew a vote of confidence from Houston manager Brad Mills earlier this week, but the right decision has finally been made. The 36-year-old posted a 8.28 ERA and 2.00 WHIP over five starts. Rodriguez will make his first major league start on Tuesday against the Reds. Figueroa will move to the bullpen.

Nelson Figueroa was battered again Thursday, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks over five innings in the loss to the Cardinals.

Figueroa even tried pitching exclusively from the stretch in this one, something he's had plenty of experience in this season with his 8.28 ERA and 2.00 WHIP over five starts. Astros manager Brad Mills gave Figueroa a vote of confidence earlier this week, but they simply can't keep running him out there. Assuming he's still in the rotation, he'll face the Reds in Cincy.

It's the first time since last year's Tommy John surgery that Hudson has faced hitters wearing a different uniform. The D'Backs says the righty's fastball sat in the 91-93 mph range, which is obviously a good sign. "The light at the end of the tunnel is getting a little bit brighter now," Hudson said. Hudson will appear in another extended spring game next week and doesn't appear far off from a rehab assignment. He could be back as soon as late June if all goes well, though the big club doesn't currently have room for him in the rotation. May 19
