Jason Marquis limited the Cardinals to two runs -- one earned -- on three hits over six innings to improve to 6-2 on Monday.
Marquis has won each of his last five trips to the bump and has been one of baseball's best starters over that stretch. We aren't here to pimp Marquis, however, as he's benefited from smoke and mirrors and his home park perhaps more than any pitcher in the game. Marquis' 28 walks lead the National League. And that five-game winning streak? He posted a hideous 17/18 K/BB rate over 31 2/3 innings during that stretch. This house of cards is about to topple and you'd be wise to identify the sucker in your league to pay for Marquis' 6-2 record and 3.27 ERA before it does. May 21 - 1:20 AM

Date:

Jason Marquis pitched eight innings of five-hit ball and combined with Huston Street on a 1-0 shutout of the Marlins on Wednesday.

A fine outing, even if it was against a Triple-A lineup. Marquis has won three straight starts and lowered his ERA to 3.48. Things are about to get more difficult with road starts against the Orioles and Diamondbacks and a home outing against the Cardinals next on the schedule.
May 8 - 6:19 PM

Jason Marquis held the Giants to just two runs over six-plus innings Sunday for his second win of the season.

Marquis allowed six hits, four walks, and had three strikeouts. He struggled with his command and benefitted from early run support. Marquis is nothing more than an NL-only option.
Apr 28 - 8:32 PM

Jason Marquis lasted just 4 2/3 innings Monday, giving up seven runs on four hits and four walks in a loss to the Brewers.

Marquis looked lost from the get go in this one, as he gave up a single and two homers and hit two batters in the first inning. He settled in a bit over the next few innings but then gave up a two-spot in the fifth. Marquis had pitched pretty well in his first three starts but will now take a 4.63 ERA into the weekend start versus the Giants.
Apr 23 - 1:27 AM

Jason Marquis limited the Dodgers to one run and three hits in 7 2/3 innings to earn his first win of the season on Tuesday.

Marquis pitched well in back-to-back starts versus the Dodgers after losing to Colorado his first time out. But that's nothing new; he's 7-4 with a 2.53 ERA in 16 starts and one relief appearance against the Dodgers in his career. Next up for Marquis is a home start against the Brewers, which rates as a rather promising matchup for NL-only leaguers.
Apr 17 - 1:35 AM

Jason Marquis yielded two runs in five innings Thursday as part of a no-decision against the Dodgers.

Marquis allowed 11 out of the 26 batters he faced to reach base, so it's pretty impressive that he somehow managed to walk away with just two runs scoring. The veteran right-hander might not be as fortunate for a rematch against the Dodgers next week. He shouldn't be owned outside of NL-only formats.
Apr 12 - 2:33 AM

Jason Marquis gave up five runs (two earned) over six innings in a loss to the Rockies on Friday.

A throwing error by Everth Cabrera opened the door for three runs to score in the bottom of the third inning. Marquis allowed six hits on the day (including a pair of home runs) while striking out one and walking one. While the veteran right-hander enjoyed some success after leaving the Twins last season, we're not expecting a repeat performance in 2013.
Apr 5 - 7:33 PM

Jason Marquis spun six innings of one-run ball Monday against the Rangers.

He walked four and gave up six hits, but he was able to limit the damage with the help of five strikeouts. Marquis has ridden his sinker to a 2.00 ERA over five outings this spring. He'll open the season in the Padres' rotation.
Mar 25 - 7:52 PM

Jason Marquis allowed two runs -- one earned -- over three innings in Tuesday's win over the Dodgers.

Marquis gave up four hits and walked two while striking out two. The sinkerballer is an underwhelming talent, but he provided solid innings for the Padres last season and is expected to break camp as a member of the rotation.
Mar 5 - 6:38 PM

Padres re-signed RHP Jason Marquis to a one-year, $3 million contract.

It's a decent score for Marquis, whose career appeared to be in jeopardy after he opened 2012 with an 8.47 ERA through seven starts with the Twins. But he rebounded out in San Diego, like many pitchers before him, and should remain a decent option for the Padres in 2013.

According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, the Padres are close to re-signing right-hander Jason Marquis.

Marquis had a decent 4.04 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 15 starts with San Diego before fracturing a bone in his left hand after getting struck by a comebacker in late August. The righty will get a one-year contract from the Friars.

Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said the team has interest in re-signing Jason Marquis.

"He’s on the radar," said Byrnes. "The more we looked around, he’s a guy we’re talking about." Marquis' 2012 season ended prematurely in mid-August when he suffered a fractured left hand after being hit by a comebacker. He pitched pretty well in his time with the Padres, though, posting a 4.04 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 15 outings. He wouldn't be a bad guy to have around for depth, given that it should only take a minor league deal.

Jason Marquis has elected free agency.

Marquis got off to a woeful start with the Twins this season, posting an 8.47 ERA over seven starts. But, he rebounded with 4.04 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 15 outings with the Padres before his season ended in mid-August due to a broken bone in his hand. The 34-year-old might have to settle for a minor league deal this winter.

Jason Marquis (wrist) threw a bullpen session Thursday.

Marquis hasn't pitched since August 21 due to a broken bone in his left (non-throwing) hand. It's highly unlikely he'll return before the end of the season, but he's trying to keep his arm in shape. "He loves baseball," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He loves to throw. When he broke his hand, he wanted to keep throwing. He wanted his body clock to know he was pitching in September. I admire that." Marquis has a 4.04 ERA in 15 starts since joining the Padres and is due to hit free agency this offseason.

Jason Marquis (wrist) threw more than 50 pitches in a simulated game Saturday.

Marquis' fractured left thumb still leaves him unable to catch balls thrown back to him, but he wants to keep his pitching arm in shape. The right-hander still wants to return late this season, though Padres manager Bud Black didn't sound optimistic about the possibility. "He wants to keep throwing," Black said. "He wants to keep his body throwing through the end of the season. He doesn’t want to be shut down. He still has to get a (medical) clearance to pitch."
